Climate Vandalism and North American Capitalism
North America has been witness to two distinct forms of climate vandalism over the last year. In the case of the United States, it came from President Donald Trump's decision last week to formally withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord of December 2015, an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) set for 2020 to address greenhouse gas emissions mitigation, and adaptation, as well as proposals for financial assistance. The 21st Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC in Paris was adopted by consensus on, and as of June 2017, 195 countries have signed the agreement, with 148 ratifying it with each country setting targets, making plans and reporting on its efforts to mitigate climate change....

Friends,
Now that Trump has pulled the United States out of the Paris Agreement, it’s been a tough few days for the climate movement.
But if there’s one thing I’ve learned over decades of fighting this fight, it’s that at moments like this, we have to work even harder to grow and strengthen the movement for climate action. We need to stand up to Trump’s lies by shining a light on the truth. We must make it clear to those around us what climate change truly puts at risk. That’s why, today, I’m asking you, as a personal favour, to do something a little different. I’m asking you to watch a film -- and...

Quebec Sovereigntists Debate Fallout from Québec Solidaire’s Decisions on Alliances
As I explained in my previous report on the Québec solidaire (QS) congress, it was disclosed after the congress that the QS central leadership had disavowed the signatures by its representatives on a proposed "road map" to independence drafted in April by the coalition OUI Québec, which includes all the pro-independence parties including QS.
That decision, not reported to the QS congress delegates in late May, has since given rise so far to several articles, all of them published in the Montréal nationalist daily Le Devoir. I have translated them below. They include, in order:
* an explanation of its decisions by the QS national leadership, signed by the party's newly-elected president Nika Deslauriers;

Paris is Burning
James P. Hare
With U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to formally withdraw from the Paris Agreement, he has put an end to months of apparent indecision. This withdrawal does not dissolve the agreement, which still includes nearly every country on the planet, but it is hard to imagine how an already weak agreement can be expected to slow -- not to mention reverse -- greenhouse gas emissions without the participation of the United States. Seeing this decision as anything other than a nail in the coffin of the global climate regime is nothing but wishful thinking.
For an administration that has promoted a seemingly unending series of bad policies -- from healthcare to immigration to militarism to the unceasing transfer of...

Hopefully by now you have heard the news!
BC has just become the most exciting political landscape in Canada with an agreement between the BC NDP and BC Greens to Govern on behalf of a true majority of BC Citizens.
Their “Supply & Confidence” agreement has struck a deal to bring in Proportional Representation with a referendum in 2018.
This time we’re ready and will make sure citizens understand the options to make a clear choice for better democracy.

Yesterday the House of Commons voted on a motion that, if passed, could have put pressure on Trudeau to put electoral reform back on the table after breaking his promise earlier this year.[1]
146 members mostly from the NDP, Conservative, Bloc Quebecois and Green parties voted in support of yesterday’s motion, which was to endorse the final recommendations of the all-party committee on electoral reform.
Thanks to your phone calls, emails and letters, you even convinced two Liberal MPs, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith (Beaches-East York) and Sean Casey (Charlottetown), to break ranks with their party and vote in favour of electoral reform.
But 159 Liberals voted against it, and the motion was ultimately defeated. We’re disappointed, but we know this is not the end of the road for electoral reform in Canada.
Your MP supported the motion yesterday. Can you take a moment to send a thank-you message to your MP for voting in support of the motion and standing up for electoral reform? If we show MPs who stand up for electoral reform that we support them, we make it more likely that other MPs will stand with us in the future.
