Labour's Permanent Reformation
Benjamin Selwyn
The 2017 British general election has generated the beginnings of a qualitative-change in the relationship between the Labour Party, much of British society, and parliament. That transformation can be understood as the emergence of a permanent reformation.
Labour's much better-than expected support raises the distinct possibility of its victory in the next election. Against all the odds -- the polls, the hostile right-wing press, expectations within the Labour Party itself -- Jeremy Corbyn led the party through a brilliantly coordinated campaign, presided over the biggest swing to Labour since the earth-shaking 1945 general election, and placed socialist ideas firmly back on the political agenda.
The significance of the Labour surge is not, primarily, a question of a shift...

Private Billing and Health Clinics: Rebuild Capacity in Public Hospitals
Natalie Mehra
In the Globe and Mail this weekend, physicians who are extra-billing patients for services at private clinics justified themselves by complaining that they cannot get operating room time and waits are too long in the public system.
Let's be honest, these problems do exist. But these problems do not justify double-billing -- charging the public healthcare system and patients as well for healthcare. They do not justify breaking Canadian laws that are meant to provide equity and protect patients from user fees when they are sick, elderly and least able to pay. And they do not justify charging two times, three times, five times or even more what the public system pays...

Dear Paov, On June 7, I met with Global Citizen to accept an official petition signed by 2,810 people asking the Government of Canada to make a commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).
I have received over 30,000 Tweets and emails to the same effect, and I am inspired by the enthusiasm shown by Canadians and Global Citizens around the world who have chosen to act on this global issue.
I have received your message loud and clear.
Today, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, I announced that the Government of Canada...

Hey all you lonely hearts out there,
Can’t see . . . can’t breathe . . . can’t think . . . ?
How can we have spaceships and virtual reality and starving children at the same time? Weighing the almost magical technological advancement of recent years against the regression of our relations with nature and each other, one wonders what kind of life we will propel ourselves into.
Adbusters #132, with Field Guide to a New World Order Part 2, hits newsstands worldwide today and can be purchased online.

Dear PAOV,
I have spent decades calling on world leaders to take ambitious climate action, so the news of Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Agreement was hard to hear. It means we need to push for even more ambitious climate action from leaders like Justin Trudeau.
However, while Prime Minister Trudeau says he’s committed to the Paris Agreement, his actions to approve two dirty energy pipelines tell a different story.
We just finished the incredibly moving "Raise a Paddle” journey through the tar sands with Pacific Climate Warriors traveling all the way from South East Asia. Now, we're planning major campaigns to stop tar sands extraction and hold Justin Trudeau to his promises -- but we need your help. Will you make a donation of $10 to 350.org?

The Need For A New U.S. Foreign Policy Toward North Korea
Marty Hart-Landsberg
USA-North Korean relations remain very tense, although the threat of a new Korean War has thankfully receded. Still the U.S. government remains determined to tighten economic sanctions on North Korea and continues to plan for a military strike aimed at destroying the country's nuclear infrastructure. And the North for its part has made it clear that it would respond to any attack with its own strikes against U.S. bases in the region and even the U.S. itself.
This is not good, but it is important to realize that what is happening is not new. The U.S. began conducting war games with South Korean forces in 1976 and it was not long...
