Public Transit, Privatization and the Canada Infrastructure Bank
Canadian Union of Public Employees
The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) will create a pipeline of privatization for our public transit systems. Corporations will be able to extract long-term profit from public transit fares and public subsidies.
Our governments subsidize public transit because it’s critical infrastructure for our communities: to get us from place to place, to reduce traffic congestion, and to green our environment. When we allow corporations to plan, finance, operate, maintain and own public transit, we funnel ridership fares and government funding into corporate coffers.
The CIB will give unprecedented control and decision-making power over our public transit infrastructure to private sector investors. This means the public interest will take a back seat...

Reading Capital: Changing Historical Contexts and Different Political Projects
Ingo Schmidt
One hundred and fifty years after the first volume of Marx’s Capital was published in 1867, Marx remains a common point of reference but his magnus opus is by no means widely read. Once he was thrown off pedestals across the former Soviet Union, Western business media adopted Marx as a principal witness for the capitalist cause. In 1998, 150 years after the publication of the Communist Manifesto, Marx and Engels were hailed as prophets of globalization. In the aftermath of the 2007/08 world economic crisis, a string of articles portrayed Marx as the one who saw it coming. Similar articles commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of Capital and will, in all...

Friends,
The Canadian Museum of History is drawing in record numbers of visitors this year thanks to their freshly minted “Canadian History Hall.” This exhibit has been applauded for the honest and uncensored view it offers into Canada’s national history.
But what fewer people know is that this exhibit, and a number of others at the Museum, are sponsored by the most dangerous Big Oil lobby group in the country: the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP).
CAPP’s fingerprints are all over extreme climate events sweeping the globe and some of the worst Indigenous rights violations right here at home. CAPP’s dirty work directly contradicts the Museum's values. Will you sign the petition calling on Museum CEO Mark O’Neill to cut ties to CAPP?
This weekend, some of my...

Demand animal cruelty charges be laid! r33
Dear PAOV,
The Calgary Stampede rodeo started this week. Right now, calves, cows, and horses are suffering at this cruel spectacle of animal abuse. They are forced to perform in brutal rodeo events like chuckwagon racing, calf roping, steer wrestling, and bronco riding.
One horse already lost his life. He suffered a fractured leg while being forced to pull a chuckwagon, so his owner killed him.
PAOV, it's illegal to cause distress and suffering to animals, and rodeo events aren't exempt from animal cruelty laws. There's no question that animals experience distress—from

Labor’s Legitimacy Crisis Under Trump
Barry Eidlin
As nativist right-wing populism surges across the Global North amidst the exhaustion of social democracy and "Third Way" liberalism, the United States finds itself at the forefront. Elsewhere, right populist parties have led in the polls, as with the Front National in France and the PVV in the Netherlands, or played key roles in seismic political events, as with UKIP and Brexit. But so far, only in the U.S. has the right populist wave captured a major political party and ridden it to power. The improbable election of Donald Trump reflects deep crises within the U.S. political system, but also this broader crisis of modern liberalism.
The early months of the Trump administration have been chaotic, but...
