Keeping Europe's Police Accountable

Open Society Foundations Police with riot gear in front of small group © Tomas van Houtryve/VII/Redux
Last September, a university researcher entered a suburban rail station in Paris and heard cries of intense pain coming from a middle-aged black woman being roughly handled by police. The researcher began filming the incident with his phone, which is when, he says, the officers turned on him, grabbed his phone, tasered him, and threatened to rape and kill him. As shocking as the researcher’s story was, it was hardly the first time that a European citizen was harassed by officers while trying to document their behavior. Despite being a key safeguard of civil liberties and human rights, the European Court of Human Rights has yet to establish filming or photographing police as a general right. Doing so would not only be good for citizens but would help law enforcement by establishing an objective record of contested incidents and, ultimately, building public confidence in their work.

Banking on Privatization: the Canada Infrastructure Bank

Banking on Privatization: the Canada Infrastructure Bank

Canadian Union of Public Employees

The Liberal government is promoting the Canada Infrastructure Bank as a new way to provide financing for public infrastructure. But it’s really a new and dangerous way for corporations to profit from public infrastructure and services. The bank will allow corporations and private lenders unprecedented access to -- and power over -- the infrastructure that keeps our communities safe and makes them great places to live.

The Canada Infrastructure Bank (CIB) will support projects that generate revenue for private lenders and corporations, including water and wastewater systems, public transit, roads and electrical utilities. Privatization will lead to higher user fees and tolls. It will also divert significant public funds away from building...

BREAKING

Paov, Ralph Goodale has just FINALLY announced his government’s reforms to C-51.

This is a huge day for the C-51 fight. These reforms (officially now part of Bill C-59) are aimed at finally addressing the concerns we’ve raised about Bill C-51 since it was first brought in over two years ago.1

There’s some good news: new measures that we fought hard for have been introduced. But it still doesn’t address many of the fundamental privacy concerns Canadians voiced in the...

We Need Free Speech to Fight the Right

Nikki Williams

"Free Speech or die, Portland. You got no safe space. This is America. Get out if you don't like free speech." Those were the chilling words of anti-Muslim terrorist Jeremy Christian at his arraignment for stabbing three people who tried to stand up to his harassment of two women of color, one of them wearing a hijab, on a light rail train in Portland, Oregon.

Christian was responding to the far right's current cynical campaign in defense of what it calls "free speech" -- which to the bigots means the freedom to harass, intimidate and assault oppressed people with no opposition.

In a Facebook event in support of Christian that was quickly deleted,...

View in browser Hey Paov,

Last Monday, Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announced that Canada will pledge $100 million to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) after receiving our petition on June 7 and we want to say thank you to Canada!

This commitment from the Government of Canada is an important step towards the global eradication of polio and it was made thanks to your actions!

Your tweets, emails and petition signatures helped encourage the government to make this commitment. We did it!

Urgent: Help save Bill S-203!

r1 Whales & dolphins under threat r33

Dear PAOV,

A Senate bill to ban whale and dolphin captivity is under threat.

Bill S-203 is groundbreaking: It would protect cetaceans from the misery of life in a concrete tank.

Yet some senators are trying to derail this legislation in advance of a crucial committee vote on Tuesday evening.

PAOV, the situation is desperate. We fear this bill may be killed by senators that do the bidding of Marineland and the Vancouver Aquarium—which make big bucks from displaying captive whales.

Please take action right away by telling Senate committee members they must pass Bill S-203.

Whale and dolphin lives are on the line right...

Time to Revitalize the Anti-War Movement

Time to Revitalize the Anti-War Movement

Canadian Union of Postal Workers

Justin Trudeau certainly did not run on a military-strength platform. Nowhere on the campaign trail did Liberals talk about increasing military spending or using "hard power" abroad. The recent speech by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland, alongside the announced 70% increase in military spending should ring alarm bells. Stephen Harper wouldn't have dared such an announcement. Canadians wouldn't have accepted it. Not with our hospitals, schools and infrastructure in such sorry shape. Not with indigenous communities left abandoned by our entire economic system. Not without real action on climate change. Harper couldn't have gotten away with shovelling an extra $14-billion a year into military spending. Why should we let Trudeau?

The recent...

Contract Faculty

These videos explore the situation of Canadian contract academic faculty and compares their situation to the even poorer conditions American contract faculty face, highlighting the need to more firmly address working conditions in Canada. The second film, “Contract Faculty: Injustice in the University,” focuses on not only the injustice faced by contract faculty but the implications of this injustice for students, the University and higher education in general. The story is primarily told through the words of contract faculty themselves. Where there is injustice there is usually both tragedy and dark humour and the film presents both.
