Saving the EU from Existential Crisis

Open Society Foundations A woman holding a European Union flag © Bernadett Szabo/Newscom
In the years following the trauma of the Second World War, a small group of visionaries initiated a project to bind Europe’s western half together into an organization whose members would never wage war against each other. And for more than a half-century, this system—the European Union—worked. Its economies grew, its citizens flourished, and it was at peace. The situation today is very different. As Open Society Foundations Chairman and Founder George Soros recently said during a speech for the Brussels Economic Forum, “The European Union is now in an existential crisis.” Yet even if the challenges are immense, there is a pathway to a reinvented, stronger European Union. But as Soros warned in his remarks, the salvation of the European Union “won’t happen by itself.”

The False Promise of “End Demand” Laws

People marching with signs
Despite its recent popularity, it’s worth recognizing that the so-called Nordic model of criminalizing the purchasing of sex falls well short of what sex workers in Lyon, France, demanded more than 40 years ago.

r1 Re: Polio
View in browser Dear Paov,

On June 7, I met with Global Citizen to accept an official petition signed by 2,810 people asking the Government of Canada to make a commitment to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

I have received over 30,000 Tweets and emails to the same effect, and I am inspired by the enthusiasm shown by Canadians and Global Citizens around the world who have chosen to act on this global issue.

I have received your message loud and clear.

Today, at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, I announced that the Government of Canada...

Unions and the City: Negotiating Urban Change

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 1 June 2017

Unions and the City: Negotiating Urban Change

This panel invites Toronto labour leadership to respond to a comparative book on labour strategy and political action in Toronto and New York City, titled Unions and the City: Negotiating Urban Change (Cornell ILR Press, Spring 2017). The book discusses how local unions in four sectors (hospitality, film, green energy and childcare) seek to advance organizing and collective bargaining goals through the reregulation of their respective sectors. Union strategy is evaluated according to whether it succeeds in achieving narrow trade union goals while also addressing broader class demands and social justice criteria.

Moderated by Ian MacDonald. Presentations by:

UK Election: Labour Surge Gives Unions a Chance

Gregor Gall

For the vast majority of unions in Britain, the idea of the Labour Party fighting a general election with a dream leadership team of Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell was manna from heaven after the era of New Labour. From 1997 to 2010, many unions believed Labour governments were a case of "power without principles." The unions did manage to get Ed Miliband elected as leader in 2010, rather than his more centrist brother David, but that did little to shift the balance in the equation between power and principles come the 2015 general election.

The latest vote witnessed an unexpected and significant Labour advance despite a viciously hostile press and deep internal party...

Most bestiality is legal in Canada. Animals need your help!

r1 Protect animals from sexual abuse r33

Dear PAOV,

Canada has some of the worst animal protection laws in the Western world. Our laws are so outdated that one year ago today, the Supreme Court of Canada ruled that most sexual abuse of animals is not a crime.

Canadians were appalled when the Supreme Court's judgment came out. Yet a year later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government have failed to close this disturbing legal loophole.

It's an absolute disgrace that Canadian law lets abusers hurt animals for sexual gratification. The federal government has done worse than nothing—last year it blocked legislation that would have closed the bestiality loophole and updated Canada's animal cruelty laws.

PAOV, animal abuse is unacceptable. Politicians must start taking...

Sunday’s French Election

Richard Greeman

The good news this May was that French voters rejected far-right Marine Le Pen by a two-to-one margin in the second round of the Presidential election. "At least the French are not schmucks as the Americans!" were the first words that passed the sweet lips of my Provençal partner Elyane when the radio announced Le Pen's defeat. As the Borowitz Report headlined: "French Annoyingly Retain Right to Claim Intellectual Superiority over Americans." Aside from this moral victory, the French people have little to be happy about.

The bad news was that France ended up electing Emmanuel Macron, an efficient technocrat who consciously incarnates French capital's need to eliminate the ‘French exception’ and level the wages, rights and benefits of...

$15 and Fairness Shakes Up Ontario

$15 and Fairness Shakes Up Ontario

David Bush

The Fight for $15 and Fairness scored a big victory on May 30 when the Ontario Liberals announced they would raise the minimum wage to $15 by January 1, 2019. The Liberals also announced a slew of other legislative changes they will introduce as part of the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, such as two paid personal emergency leave days (as part of the 10 PEL days workers are already entitled too), equal pay for equal work for part-time workers, requiring employees to be paid for three hours of work if their shift is cancelled within 48 hours, an additional week of paid vacation for employees who have been with a business for at least five years.
