C-51: Last Chance

Paov, June has been a huge month for the C-51 fight, and for OpenMedia in general. We’ve raised over $30,000 in one time donations, and this is your last chance to donate before our June triple fundraising drive comes to an end.

Triple My Gift

The verdicts on the government’s C-51 reforms have started to roll in, and it’s clear that major work still needs to be done1. The reforms set out in Bill C-59 reflect some hard fought gains we’ve made in protecting Canadian privacy, but they still don’t address many fundamental privacy concerns that we helped voice during the consultation.

We’ve protested, we’ve flooded their public consultation, and we’ve created a letter writing tool that’s already gotten over 3500 letters to Canadian MPs. Together we’ve had a huge impact in how the bill has changed, and all of this was made possible...

Populism in the 21st Century:

Class Struggle Returns to Haunt Capitalist Democracies

J. F. Conway

Populism: "any political movement which seeks
to mobilize the people... against a state which
is either controlled by vested interests or too powerful in itself."
--- Oxford Dictionary of Sociology

The term "populism" has returned to the daily vocabulary of political pundits and analysts trying to make sense of the recent seismic shifts in the politics of many capitalist democracies. For the most part the term is used loosely, with no definition to guide the reader. There was the "populism" behind the unexpected surges in support for Bernie Sanders in the U.S. primaries and for Jeremy Corbyn in the UK election. Then there was the "populism" at the...

Working Classes and the Rise of the New Right:
Socialist Politics in the Era of Trump

Socialist Project

The success of xenophobic right-wing political forces today calls for the development of a socialist praxis fit for this perilous political moment. Taking this seriously requires that we address the inroads of the far right into working class constituencies that were bastions of trade unionism for much of the 20th century, and traditionally voted heavily not only for New Deal Democrats, or Labour and Social Democratic parties on the centre-left but even, as in France, for Communist parties.

The political conjuncture inaugurated in 2016 in the imperial centres of global capitalism, first with the UK’s break with the European Union initiated by the Brexit referendum and...

C-51 reforms

OpenMedia r1

Hi Paov,

Finally - after YEARS of pressure, the first reforms to notorious spying bill C-51 have been announced.1

In all our years of action on C-51, this is the most critical time in our campaign to protect online security and privacy in Canada.

The good news is that we’re closer than ever before to winning — the reforms so far that include strong oversight of intelligence activities are a huge sign that we forced the government to listen to ordinary...

The Neoliberal Writing on the Wall: Ontario's Basic Income Experiment

The Neoliberal Writing on the Wall: Ontario’s Basic Income Experiment

John Clarke

Since 2010, the UK has endured a political regime that can be considered a cutting edge of the austerity agenda. Through the film, I, Daniel Blake, people around the world have become familiar with the institutionalized cruelty of the Country’s warped system of providing social benefits to those in need.

To those who endure sub-poverty misery, the humiliating intrusion of the Work Capability Assessment (WCA) and the ever present threat of the sanctions regime, the conclusion that anything must be better than the present set up is an easy one to arrive at. Disabled people who deal with a state bureaucracy that labels them scroungers and seeks at every turn to abandon...

Trump, Right-Wing Populism, and the Future of the Labour Movement

Trump, Right-Wing Populism, and the Future of the Labour Movement

Bill Fletcher Jr. gave the keynote address at the 4th Annual Conference of the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies.

Bill Fletcher Jr. has been an activist since his teen years. Upon graduating from college he went to work as a welder in a shipyard, thereby entering the labour movement. Over the years he has been active in workplace and community struggles as well as electoral campaigns. He has worked for several labour unions in addition to serving as a senior staffperson in the national AFL-CIO. Fletcher is the former president of TransAfrica Forum; a Senior Scholar with the Institute for Policy Studies; an editorial board member of BlackCommentator.com; and in the leadership of several...

UNESCO: Protect culture, not coal

Coal is threatening the world's most precious heritage sites. r1

Dear friends,

Coal kills and coal speeds up climate change — that is clear to everyone. What may not be well known is that in many parts of the world, UNESCO World Heritage sites are also at risk, thanks to coal.

New coal power plants proposed in Australia, Bangladesh, Kenya and Turkey pose an enormous threat to some of the world’s greatest natural and cultural places. This is devastating. Precious sites such as the Great Barrier Reef, the Lamu Islands and the Sundarbans forest should be under strict protection.

Fortunately, UNESCO has a unique power to call out governments who fail to protect key places on this planet, but we must show that people all over the world are standing together in this global call. Call on...

Dear friend,

Like you, we hate it. "Fake news." We read about it every day. Trump rolls it out whenever he wants to dismiss and diminish media for simply covering stories he doesn't like. And you can be sure we'll be seeing more of this tactic in Canada with the new "Harper with a smile" Conservative leader Andrew Scheer – we know already his links to the self-acclaimed "Canadian Breitbart" of Ezra Levant and his Rebel Media.

The whale & dolphin bill is safe - for now

BIll S-203 lives to fight another day! r33

Dear PAOV,

Thanks to thousands of supporters like you, the Senate bill to end whale and dolphin captivity is safe!

Earlier this week, we told you that Bill S-203 was at risk of being killed by the aquarium industry, which makes big bucks by keeping whales and dolphins in tiny concrete tanks. Some senators were trying to derail the bill behind closed doors at a Senate committee meeting.

But thanks to you, we saved Bill S-203. Our message of compassion was heard loud and clear—over 5,000 people emailed and phoned senators, swamping the Senate email server and making news headlines. This incredible...

Trump's Trade Policy Agenda: More Liberalization

Trump's Trade Policy Agenda: More Liberalization

Christoph Scherrer

President Donald Trump has been portrayed as a protectionist. His immediate cancellation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) upon assuming the presidency, as well as his support for the border adjustment tax proposed by the Republican leadership in Congress, seems to confirm this portrayal of his foreign economic policy leanings. However, a different conclusion emerges from a closer reading of Donald Trump's business interests, of his trade agenda as published in the 2016 Annual Report on the Trade Agreements Program by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), and of American trade negotiation history. Trump will use large trade deficits to pressure trading partners to open up their markets. Companies which are successful in exporting to...
