British Columbia NDP’s Crawl to $15

David Bush

Last Tuesday the new British Columbia NDP government announced it was raising the province’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2021. The new government had already announced it would raise the minimum wage by 50 cents on September 15, bringing it to $11.35 an hour. In fact, this 50 cent raise had been planned by the previous Liberal government.

The announcement makes British Columbia the third province to bring in a $15 minimum wage. This is undoubtedly a win for the larger Fight for $15 movement in Canada and the United States.

However, the four-year phase-in to $15 is the longest pathway so far in Canada. The Alberta NDP, the first to bring in...

Turning a Breakdown into a Rebirth

The situation in Venezuela is perilous and getting worse every day. But although it is paralyzing the government, the economic and social calamity overtaking the country has created unprecedented opportunities for Venezuela’s embattled free press. For the first time in more than a decade, allies of the government are now looking for new ways to speak to the people—not only in Venezuela, but throughout the world. No matter what happens as the crisis unfolds, the resurgence of Venezuela’s independent media has already reminded us why a free press is an essential part of an open society.

White Supremacy in Canada

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer has shocking ties to a Canadian white supremacist website that broadcast live from the recent protests in Charlottesville.

The world is in shock after a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville turned violent, ending with a terrorist attack that killed one anti-racist protester, and injured almost 20 others. [1]

Faith Goldy, a contributor to the Canadian far-right website Rebel Media, was broadcasting live from Charlottesville and caught the attack on tape. Moments before, she had been on camera mocking the anti-racist protestors, rationalizing the white supremacist rally and making the case that the white supremacists were being treated unfairly by police and the media. The Saudi Arabian government is murdering their own citizens using weapons they bought from Canada. [1]

According to videos circulating on social media, the Saudi military is using Canadian-made armoured vehicles as part of violent attacks against Shia civilians -- a persecuted religious minority. [2] We have to act now to block the sale of arms to Saudi Arabia before any more Canadian weapons are used to commit atrocities against civilians.

Should Leadnow support this petition to save Fish Lake?

Our friends at the Tsilhqot'in National Government recently created a petition on our public petition website, entitled “Save Fish Lake."

The petition is addressed to the Premier of British Columbia, and reads:

Taseko Mines Ltd.’s biggest supporter – the BC government – is trying to breathe life into the corporation’s totally discredited open-pit mine proposal near the Tsilhqot’in’s sacred Teztan Biny (Fish Lake). BC has issued work permits that allow the company to engage in extensive, destructive exploratory work in the area. This includes 76 km of road and trail, 122 drill holes, 367 test pits (dug by an excavator), and 20 km of seismic lines in an area of profound cultural importance.

The provincial government approved this destruction despite the Prosperity/New Prosperity mine proposals being scathingly rejected twice by the federal Harper-era conservatives. Both times two different independent expert panels identified grave and immitigable concerns.
Enough is enough. It's time to tell our new provincial government that consent matters to Canadians.

Please sign the petition and share it with your community. Support the Tsilhqot'in in our fight to protect our home, lands and sacred waters.

The integrity of the Canadian government's commitment to reconciliation, as well its environmental assessment process, is at stake.

Here's what the Tsilhqot'in National Government wrote about it:

[SPAM] How New York Subways Got Broke, On Purpose

How New York Subways Got Broke, On Purpose

Vincent DeCesare

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pushing for a tax on the rich to fund desperately needed improvements to the crumbling subway system run by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). De Blasio's plan would raise city income taxes on individuals making over $500,000 a year and couples making over $1-million by about half of a per cent, which would raise over $700-million for subway and bus upgrades as well as half-price Metro Cards for the almost 800,000 city residents who are at or below the federal poverty level.

Predictably, New York State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, a Republican from Long Island, shot down the proposal in a statement declaring that "raising...

Central Asia Breaks Historys Chains

Open Society Foundations Nargis Kessenova
Generally, when discussions turn to the politics of Central Asia, one hears of authoritarian stagnation, immutable institutions, and unmovable structures. The region is considered to be burdened by the weight of a history defined by subjugation from its Great Power neighbors abroad and repression from its domestic rulers at home. A frequent assumption is that if change is to come to Central Asia, it will come from the outside; indigenous civil society is rarely mentioned. This narrative is not fashioned out of whole cloth, but it still ignores the very real on-the-ground progress being made every day by activists in Central Asia. No one would deny that open society in Central Asia is facing an uphill climb—but we must not discount those who are working to make it a reality.
