Afghanistan: There Is Only One Solution

Donald Trump spent a lot of time when campaigning last year denouncing Barack Obama's foreign policy. Yet within months of entering the White House he too is pledging to continue the war in Afghanistan, sending more troops not to engage in nation building as he puts it but to "kill more terrorists." It is hard to see what another estimated 4000 troops will do that Obama's surge didn't do, or how he thinks that this move will in any way improve the fortunes of the U.S. backed government which is losing the war against the Taliban.
For those who are too young to remember the origins of this war, or to whom its origins are lost...

Dear PAOV,
The Vancouver Aquarium is at it again. This time, they're suing the Vancouver Park Board for their courageous decision to ban the Aquarium from keeping whales and dolphins in tanks.
So we’re stepping in.
Last week, Animal Justice and Zoocheck filed an application to intervene in this crucial case. We believe that whales and dolphins should be swimming free in the ocean—not condemned to captivity so they can generate cash for aquariums.
We're especially disturbed that the Aquarium is claiming that keeping whales in captivity is a form of free expression, protected as a Charter right.

Physical Punishment of Children and Youth

Children are persons in formation. As such, they continually challenge parents as they explore and learn during the normal phases of growing up. According to child psychiatrist Daniel Siegel, “parents’ responses shape the development of children’s capacity to regulate their states of mind and shifts in emotions.” Siegel affirms that when a child feels mad, sad, or scared, the brain chemistry involved actually acts to prevent learning. Therefore, discipline that fosters fear, anger, or sadness is counter-productive. It will not lead to constructive learning. Read more.

BC’s wild salmon population is down 70 percent since the 1980s, largely from over fishing. [1-2] On top of that, UBC researchers say that rising water temperatures due to climate change could reduce the amount of Pacific salmon by up to an even further 30 per cent. [3]
Shockingly, it was just revealed in a Simon Fraser University study that the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) failed to uphold the commitments of its Canada’s Wild Salmon Policy and didn’t monitor 50 per cent of managed salmon populations. [4-5] Without this salmon-saving monitoring, DFO could blindly allow overfishing to wipe out wild salmon from fragile streams.

In June 2017 a referendum on Catalan independence was announced by the Government of Catalonia, formed by members of the Junts pel Sí coalition, supported by the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), for October 1 2017.

In today’s United States, hate crimes are on the rise, and millions of Americans now fear they are no longer welcome in the place they call home.
