C-51 repeal on the horizon?

OpenMedia r1

Paov, this is amazing! The government has heard your voices loud and clear: it’s time to repeal Bill C-51.

This morning Public Safety Canada released its report1 on the National Security Consultation that thousands of you took part in — and the results were unquestionable: Canadians are demanding the full repeal of C-51, along with strong privacy protections, clear accountability and oversight.

We already knew that Canadians are pro-privacy – but now there’s no denying it.

With the report in hand,...

Regulation -- Who Needs It?

Dianne Feeley

Surrounded by CEOs and autoworkers bused in for the event, Donald Trump made it clear during his March 14th appearance in the Detroit area that he was going to get rid of a federal regulation in order to free up the industry so it could "make thousands and thousands and thousands of additional cars." For him it was a simple decision: "If the standards threatened auto jobs, then common-sense changes could have and should have been made."

Trump sees regulations for higher fuel efficiency burdens auto manufacturers and drives up the cost for potential buyers. In Trump's vocabulary, regulations are all bad. (Of course Trump sees regulations around reproductive rights as good, but consistency isn't one of...

Major Decisions Face Québec Solidaire at its Forthcoming Congress

Richard Fidler

Quebec's broad party of the left, Québec solidaire (QS), will open a four-day congress on May 19 in Montréal -- the 12th congress in its 11-year history. The delegates face a challenging agenda. It includes the final stage of adoption of the party's detailed program, a process begun eight years ago; discussion of possible alliances with other parties and some social movements including a proposed fusion with another pro-independence party, Option nationale; and renewal of the party's top leadership.

Québec solidaire has attracted unusual media attention in recent months in the wake of the February announcement by Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, the best-known leader of Quebec's massive student strike in 2012, that he had decided...

Friends,

For just over a week, I have had the immense privilege of hosting Climate Warriors from the Pacific Islands for their first ever visit to Canada. These last few days were exhausting, emotionally draining, and yet, simultaneously heart warming. Now, I want you to see what I saw.

Tonight, we will host an evening of climate resistance stories -- sign up now to join us. At this event, the Pacific Climate Warriors and Indigenous peoples from closer to home will take the stage. We also plan to premiere a first cut of the “Raise A Paddle” short documentary that summarizes the story of the entire journey.

Canada’s Role in the World:
A Review of Tyler Shipley’s Ottawa and Empire: Canada and the Military Coup in Honduras

Tanner Mirrlees

Stories about Canada's role in the world define "who Canadians are" and "who they are not." The story that gets told most is a positive one. Canada, benign and benevolent, promotes free markets, democracy and multiculturalism while protecting peace, stability and human rights in each country it engages in or does business with.

Optimistic and confident, this glowing story about Canada in the world is packaged and sold, over and over again, year after year. It shows up in the speeches of Prime Ministers and in the press releases spun by the major parties; it circulates across the news media and in...

Migration and Capitalism, in the Age of Trump:
Toward the Freedom of Movement for People, Not Capital

"We are people! We are not illegal!"

------------------------------------

This past May 1st, across the United States and here in Quebec, the spirit of May Day was alive and well. Immigrant workers have given International Workers’ Day a new breath of fresh air since the historic mobilizations of a "day without an immigrant" in the United States in 2006. This year in the U.S., broad coalitions of migrant communities and trade unions took to the streets in solidarity with immigrant workers to resist Donal Trump's racist and xenophobic policies. In Montreal the Immigrant Workers Centre, community organizations, and trade unions marched in...

Every mother counts

r1 Celebrate Mother’s Day by calling on world leaders to make the health of women and girls a global priority. View in browser
Paov,

Close to 300,000 girls and women die each year due to pregnancy and childbirth-related causes. That’s more than 800 women a day. The vast majority of these deaths are entirely preventable, but require world leaders to prioritize proven solutions to strengthen health systems, invest in safe and affordable health services and educate women about their health.

Celebrate Mother’s Day by calling on world leaders to make the health of women and girls a global priority.

Moderated by Mike Palecek – National President, Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Presentations by:

  • Suzanne MacNeil: President, Halifax-Dartmouth & District Labour Council, Solidarity Halifax
  • Bilan Arte: Leap Manifesto

Watch a preview of the Pacific Climate Warriors’ tar sands journey r1

Friends,

This past week, the most powerful out of season cyclone to ever hit the Southern Hemisphere tore through the Pacific Islands. While it bore down on on the small island state of Vanuatu, I was in Northern Alberta, taking a group of Pacific islanders on a tour through the tar sands.

These Pacific Climate Warriors have travelled halfway around the world to connect the dots between what we do here in Canada, and the impacts they feel at home. It’s been a tough week, but a powerful one. Watch this preview of the journey so far to see what I mean:

Today, the Pacific Climate arrive in Vancouver. We will meet with Indigenous...
