We made history for animals in Parliament

Dear PAOV,
Canadians expect our government to protect vulnerable animals from cruelty. Yet more often than not, politicians ignore animals and instead do the bidding of the industries that profit from hurting and killing animals.
For example, the Agriculture Committee in the federal House of Commons is supposed to work on improving farming laws. Yet most people are shocked to learn that in over 20 years, the Committee never once considered passing new laws to protect farmed animals—even though hundreds of millions of animals suffer and die each year to become food.
This finally changed last month, when Animal Justice lawyer Anna Pippus helped make history by testifying at the Agriculture Committee....

Convenient Untruths About "Human Nature:"
Can People Deal with Climate Change and Nuclear Weapons?
Judith Deutsch
At this most critical of times, do current erroneous assumptions about human nature play a role at a deep level in the prevalent responses to catastrophes? Apropos, Raymond Williams summarized Antonio Gramsci's view of hegemony as a "central system of practices, meanings and values saturating the consciousness of a society at a much deeper level than ordinary notions of ideology."
There are new and old normals and it is hard to know where public knowledge is on this. Movies from similar times evoked normal, even beautiful scenes from daily life, of intimacy and love, but with ordinary life shadowed by foreboding threats: The Garden of the Finzi Continis...

Friends,
For more than twenty years, the people of the Pacific Islands, including myself, have been waiting for countries like Canada to stop digging up fossil fuels. Despite our calls, world leaders continue to support the expansion of the oil and gas industry -- just like Justin Trudeau is doing with the tar sands. Now, as climate change raises sea levels, threatening our homes, communities and cultures, we are rising up and taking matters into our own hands.
I’m travelling with a delegation of Pacific Climate Warriors to deliver our messages of resilience to the people and politicians of Canada. Our hope, is that Justin Trudeau will honour our stories. Will you call on Prime Minister Trudeau to meet with us on our journey to Canada?
We...

BREAKING: Unelected and unaccountable trade representatives are meeting TODAY to bring their dangerous Internet censorship deal – the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) – back from the dead.1
Back in November, one of the largest international uprisings in history defeated the TPP by forcing key governments to abandon the deal.2
But today, those countries who still cling to this disastrous, failed deal have gathered in Toronto like witches at a Black Mass. Their goal? Bring the TPP back from beyond the grave.

'Things are serious':
Update on the French Presidential Election
Stefan Kipfer
"C’est grave," (things are serious) said the monsieur who sells me the papers every morning. A resident of Mantes-la-Jolie (a working class town at the western edge of the Paris region), he laments a lack of clarity on the dangers of the Front National (FN) not only among colleagues and neighbours but also parties and politicians.
The situation in France is indeed serious. A week before the second-round vote, Marine Le Pen has made progress in the polls but still trails Emmanuel Macron by a margin of about 18 per cent. However, analysts have pointed out that mass abstention could bring her within winning range. There is no need to be alarmist to...

A Day Without Immigrants
Labor for Our Revolution
Millions of immigrants, both documented and undocumented, who lead hard working and productive lives, are also union members.
Donald Trump launched his political campaign in 2015 with a racist attack on Mexican immigrants, painting them as rapists and murderers. He made attacks on our Muslim sisters and brothers his political trademark -- even going so far as to propose a religious test for immigration. This kind of race baiting and immigrant bashing has a long history in our country -- a consistent attempt by business elites to divide working class people in order to advance their pro-corporate agenda.
As leaders of the unions who supported Bernie Sanders for president, we refuse to go down that...

Animal Justice lawyer Anna Pippus spoke up against animal transport cruelty in Parliament this month. She testified at the House of Commons Agriculture Committee, reminding politicians that Canada's outdated animal transport laws condemn millions of animals to suffer and die en route to slaughter.

May Day
For more than 100 years, May Day has symbolized the common struggles of workers around the globe. Why is it largely ignored in North America? The answer lies in part in American labour’s long repression of its own radical past, out of which international May Day was actually born a century ago.
The seeds were sown in the campaign for the eight-hour work day. On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands of North American workers mobilized to strike. In Chicago, the demonstration spilled over into support for workers at a major farm-implements factory who‘d been locked out for union activities. On May 3, during a pitched battle between picketers and scabs, police shot two workers. At a protest rally in Haymarket Square the next day, a bomb was tossed into...
