Prime Minister Harper’s former top aide Nigel Wright has begun testifying at the criminal trial of Conservative Senator Mike Duffy – and so far Wright’s statements have shown clearly that Wright and others in the Harper Prime Minister Office and the Conservative Party secretly negotiated a payment to Senator Duffy in return for specific actions by Duffy (including requiring Duffy to lie about...

A Win for Pittsburgh Public Transit
Paul Le Blanc and Jonah McAllister-Erickson
Since port Authority of Allegheny County (PAAC) cut 15 per cent of its service, residents of Baldwin, Mooncrest and Groveton -- working-class suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania -- had to walk two miles, over roads with no sidewalks, just to catch the bus. But on September 8, Baldwin residents active in the struggle of "Buses for Baldwin" and Groveton residents who pushed for service in their county housing authority will be riding the first restored buses, celebrating the sweetness of the victory.
The battle for public transit has often been an uphill struggle under both Democratic and Republican administrations at the city, county, state and federal levels. Lessons from the Pittsburghers for Public...
It's time to change Canada's climate politics

Friends,
2015 is on track to be the hottest year in recorded history, wildfires are sweeping Canada, and we’re in the midst of what might be the most important election campaign of my lifetime. On October 19th, people across Canada will head to the polls and then, just a few weeks later, hundreds of world governments will meet in Paris to try to strike a global climate agreement.
In Paris our governments are supposed to agree on a shared target for climate action, and then propose national plans to meet that goal -- but the numbers just aren’t adding up. Everything being discussed will allow too many communities that have polluted the least to be devastated by floods, rising sea levels and other disasters.
This has the makings of a global failure of ambition -- and in no small part because of Canadian politicians. The science is clear – we need to leave...

I knew many girls growing up. In fact, my mother was a girl once and she valued the importance of an education. I believe that giving girls equal access to education worldwide is not only the right thing to do, but saying so might make me her favorite son.
Right now, 58 million girls of primary school age are denied an education, and 62 million adolescents are without access to a secondary school.
The good news is that primary school enrollment around the world is higher than it’s ever been, but we still haven’t secured education for all.

A New Union Movement and Anti-Racism
Interview with Michael Yates
Michael Yates is an economist, labour educator and activist, editor of the magazine Monthly Review, and author of Why Unions Matter among many books. In this interview he talks about the crisis of the labour movement, its relationship with the anti-racist movement, FightFor15 and much more. He was interviewed by Juan Cruz Ferre for the LeftVoice.org website, where it was first published.
Juan Cruz Ferre (JCF): In the latest edition of your book, Why Unions Matter (2009), you depict a grim situation of the labour movement in the U.S.; record-low unionization rates and the reluctance of union leadership to engage in class-warfare were some of the main features. Has this scenario changed at all since then?...
