A Disaster Waiting to Happen:
Expanding the U.S.-led ISIS War to Other Countries
Gregory Shupak
According to a 29 April report in The New York Times, leaders from the U.S.-led coalition at war with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) will meet in the coming weeks to consider broadening the mission to other countries. At present, the Obama administration is attempting to secure congressional support for a measure that would authorize expanding the war to such nations as Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Tunisia, and Yemen. Extending U.S.-led military operations would be disastrous and should be resisted.
Western military intervention is not the way to solve the ISIS crisis. Thus far it has made few gains against the group and ISIS is still...

Will you help us make history in Toronto this July?

Friends,
I have to be honest, I’m getting tired. I’m tired of fighting for a clean future one pipeline at a time. I’m tired of announcements like Friday's from the Canadian government: weak climate targets that our country has no hope of reaching while tar sands expansion continues, with no consideration of Indigenous rights. But I’m heartened by the growing power of people and communities– winning victories for social justice, clean jobs, and a safe climate across Canada.
This July, we're mobilizing across movements for a safe climate and a justice-based economy. An unprecedented coalition of Indigenous frontline communities, the labour movement, social justice organizations, environmental groups, poverty-prevention groups, faith communities, scientists, students, and thousands of others will take to the streets of downtown Toronto. The March...

Six months in review

Friend --
Six months into the term of the current City Council, I’m happy to report progress toward social justice and environmental responsibility in a number of areas.
The city’s recently adopted Strategic Plan and Budget include a strong commitment to Affordable Housing – including a quadrupling of funds for the Housing Reserve. City Council has also formed a Housing Affordability Task Force to identify municipal tools to increase the supply of low-cost housing for workers earning minimum wage and seniors on fixed incomes.
Alongside housing policy, the Strategic Plan reaffirms support for supervised consumption services and increased treatment beds to reduce harm from addictions. We now need the provincial government and Island Health to step up with multi-year operating funds for these necessary health services.
In terms of community services, the 2015 Budget increases funding for community centres and seniors centres by 25%, with...

Dissecting the Failure of Soviet ‘Socialism’
John Riddell
In current discussions of twenty-first century socialism, the work of Michael Lebowitz has a unique merit: it is rooted in the experience of Cuba and Venezuela, where efforts in recent decades to move toward socialism have been the most vigorous. Quotations from Che Guevara and Hugo Chávez set the tone.
Lebowitz's vision of the path to a socialist future is developed in several recent volumes (see "Selective Bibliography," below). His Contradictions of "Real Socialism", by contrast, analyzes the failure of the most concerted attempt to launch a transition to socialism, which took place in the Soviet Union and, after 1945, in allied states in Eastern Europe. As late as the early 1960s, the Soviet Union was...

Shaking Off the Part-Time Blues:
Fighting for the Rights of Ontario College Workers
Tracy MacMaster
We've all followed the news that part-time, insecure employment is growing. I work at an Ontario college as a full-time library technician. Every day I work side by side with part-time employees whose jobs are the same as mine, but whose working conditions are dramatically different. Part-time workers in Ontario colleges do many different jobs – some are long-time support staff, teachers or student workers – but all have one thing in common – they work without many of the standard protections Ontarians enjoy. College employees are exempted from major portions of the Employment Standards Act that provide the most basic protections for workers in Ontario. Work breaks, statutory pay...
