This week @ rabble.ca: Did Canada hear its residential school survivors?

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

29 May 2015

Hey rabble readers!

It seems that almost everywhere you turn today another government, another media organization, another pundit is worshipping at the altar of "austerity." Not at rabble.ca. We're an alternative voice. They say austerity, we say abundance. Please reject the austerity agenda and support rabble.ca today!

Next week will mark the end of government funding to investigate the truth and impact of residential schools through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Do Canadians now understand their complicity in First Nations' health and social challenges? Community organizer Natalie Robinson examines this dark part of our history as the TRC comes to an end.

The last leader of Canada's federal Progressive Conservative Party will, we are told, announce his resignation from politics today. That person is Peter MacKay, Prime Minister Stephen Harper's current Minister of Justice. What kind of mark does he leave on federal politics? Read Parliamentary reporter Karl Nerenberg's take on what it all means.

Aboriginal people are overrepresented in prisons, but significantly underrepresented in the administration of the justice system. The recent Supreme Court decision in the Kokopenace case was a grim reminder of this problem. In our Pro Bono column this month, lawyer Shelina Ali breaks down the significance of the decision for Indigenous rights in Canada.

Classes have resumed in three striking school districts in Ontario -- and while teachers will comply with the labour board ruling that sends them back to work, they say this labour dispute isn't over. Find out what's at stake in Ella Bedard's report on the situation.

Chris Lloyd's thumbs-up shot with Stephen Harper has been making rounds on the Internet. Now the ex-Conservative MP candidate speaks out on why he fooled the Tories with his political art project. Get all the details in Megan Devlin's exclusive interview!

The fake Internet is coming

Mark Zuckerberg has hatched a plan with telecom giants around the world called Internet.org, which provides access to a fake Internet that only includes services hand-picked by Zuckerberg and his cronies.

People in countries like India, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Paraguay are outraged over this fake Internet, and are speaking out. We all deserve access to the real open Internet. Stand with people around the world and demand Zuckerberg stops restricting access to the open Internet NOW.

Resistance, all the way to the end of the line:

r1

Friends,

This past weekend a wave of people power rose on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick.

Over 700 people came from across Atlantic Canada and beyond to march in the small seaside community of Red Head. This is where the proposed Energy East pipeline would ship 1.1 million barrels of tar sands oil per day to be stored and exported from the Bay of Fundy.

It was remarkable to see this small community organize such a phenomenal mobilization to protect the coast, the climate and the local economy:

This growing momentum is more than just a surge of opposition to the Energy East pipeline. It is part of a broader movement of people from all facets of Canadian society who are ready to move past fossil fuels and unite to demand a justice based transition to a clean energy...

From: Sarah Shenker, Brazil Campaigner
To: Survival Supporters

Dear Supporter,

I’ve recently returned from a visit to the Awá tribe in Brazil. You may remember the unprecedented victory last year when Survival's global campaign pushed Brazil into kicking illegal loggers off Awá land. When I last visited the community of Juriti, the Awá were too afraid to hunt and gather and couldn't find game in their forest. Now, two years on, the improvements on the ground are incredible. I found them healthy and happy, once again living off their ancestral lands. Your money, energy and enthusiasm for the campaign made it happen!

For uncontacted Awá however, the news is not so good. In a village on the...

New World Re-Ordering

Mario Candeias

What should we call the current era? Post-everything? Or perhaps, the interregnum? Whatever the name it should be given, the current period is characterized by neoliberal trans-nationalization. In addition, U.S. hegemony has been under question since the beginning of this period. In fact, the Empire is no longer U.S.-American and a change in hegemony is in full swing. Despite what world-systems theorists such as Giovanni Arrighi suggest, the balance does not seem to be tipping toward China. Nevertheless, as Niall Ferguson points out, it is moving toward Chimerica. Furthermore, since the beginning of the global financial crisis, no project has been in sight that could reorganize the active consensus of the subalterns, move perspectives on accumulation one step up the...

Monsantos Worst Fear May Be Coming True

On April 27, the Chipotle restaurant chain announced it would only use non-GMO ingredients in its food.

You might think that a business deciding to give consumers what they want makes sense in many ways.

But the decision was met with a tidal-wave of establishment media abuse. Chipotle was called irresponsible, anti-science, irrational, and much more by the Washington Post, Time Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, the LA Times, and many others.

Find out why, and get the whole story, here
