What Greece's Creditors Should Know
Vassilis K. Fouskas
In his recent article in Le Monde (31 May 2015), Greece's PM, Alexis Tsipras, said that if Greece were to implement the (failed) austerity policy of technocrats and bankers, then there would be no need to have elections in Greece, and indeed in any country following austerity programmes. He outlines two competing strategies that tend to shape current European politics: one that promotes unification and solidarity across the continent, and another that fights for division and separation.
Here, we take his thoughts a step further by suggesting what Greece's creditors should know in case the technocrats prevail in the current negotiations. Syriza's Greece cannot and will not default on its people by stopping paying wages and...

Brussels, 17 June 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC is calling on national football associations to push for genuine reform of FIFA through the establishment of an independent commission, and not merely accept that FIFA can suddenly reform itself under a leadership which has failed to end corruption after years of multi-million dollar scandals.

Reckless, dangerous, and irresponsible Bill C-51 has passed its final vote in the Senate. The government is trying to spit in the face of over 270,000 people like you -- and, as polls show, the vast majority of Canadians. We’re not going to take this lying down - join us as we launch a new action to #KillC51 and send Ottawa a message they can’t ignore.

Kurds, Labour, and the Left in Turkey
Interview with Erdem Yörük
After Turkey's parliamentary elections last week, all eyes are on the Peoples’ Democracy Party (HDP) after its successes in contesting its first ever election as a party, rather than a coalition of nominally independent candidates: a momentous decision on the part of the party leadership, which stands to gain clout in parliament and solidify its position as the electoral standard-bearer of the radical Left. At issue is whether the party has succeeded at building a leftist coalition including, but not limited to, its base of support in the Kurdish national movement. At stake is whether or not the party will play a key role in a successful effort to block Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Justice...

Friends,
Last week, more than 100 researchers raised a unified voice in support of a freeze on tar sands expansion.1
This is big news, but it also confirms what you and I already know: The expansion of the tar sands is incompatible with both climate protection and commitments to honour Indigenous rights and title.
We know that we need to move past the tar sands -- and we know that to do that we need to move toward a renewable, resilient and more just economy. We need an economy that works for people and the planet. It starts with justice, creates good work, clean jobs and healthy communities, recognizes that we have solutions, and shows we know who is responsible for causing the climate crisis.
Most of all, we know that we need to take action to make it happen, and that’s exactly what we're doing on July 4th and...

EU's Military Strategy to Deepen Mediterranean Tragedies
Nizar Visram
More than 800 migrants died on April 19 this year when their overcrowded boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the Libyan coast. The tragedy sent soaring this year's Mediterranean death toll which was by then around 1,500 – 10 times the deaths during the same period last year.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), between 23,000 and 24,000 migrants had tried to cross over to Italy since the beginning of the year, while just under 21,000 migrants made the same journey between January and April 2014. While the number of migrants rose to some extent, migrants perishing at sea have hit the roof.
Things are bound to get worse before getting...

The Scottish Left after the Referendum and The UK Elections:
A Conversation with Cat Boyd
The eyes of the world were on Scotland last September when it held a referendum on independence. This month, the whole political establishment in the UK has been shaken up by the election of 56 MPs from the Scottish National Party (SNP) in the Westminster Parliament (out of 59 Scottish seats).
What role have socialists, union activists, feminists and other progressives played in those events? What are the possibilities for a new voice on the Left in Scottish politics that is distinct from both the old Labour party (now in shambles) and the very popular SNP?
Moderated by Jessica Squires.
- introduction by Benoit Renaud, member of Quebec Solidaire.
