The Strategic Defeat of Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Sungur Savran
So at long last, despite all the meanders and sideways and detours of history, the logic of social struggles has finally put its stamp on the politics of Turkey. The resounding defeat of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his AKP at the polls in the 7th June general elections in Turkey brings out into the open a loss of political clout on the part of Erdogan as a result of the successive blows he received in the last two years at the hands of the masses and, partly, his erstwhile partners.
Two years ago almost to the day, the masses descended on the streets all over Turkey to demand the resignation of the Erdogan government, who...

Urgent Action: Stop the world’s fastest deforesation
“If they keep clearing the forest, (our people) won’t have anywhere to live”Porai Picanerai, Ayoreo leader
Paraguay’s uncontacted Ayoreo Indians are fleeing from bulldozers that are destroying their forest to make way for cattle farms. Their homeland now has the fastest rate of deforestation in the world.
The Ayoreo face catastrophe unless their land is protected. One of the companies has been caught red-handed, but no charges have been brought. We need you now, to help us stop the companies involved.
Over the last twenty years our partnership with the Ayoreo has succeeded in protecting over 150,000 hectares of their...

It’s a scandal so big it could take down a government. That is, if anyone were paying attention.
Last week, documents revealed shocking new dimensions to the B.C. government’s scandalous handling of the firing of seven health researchers back in 2012. At the time, and in the following months and years, the B.C. Liberal government and health minister claimed that an RCMP investigation into the researchers was underway.

FIFA and the United States:
The Russian Connection
George Wright
On May 27th the United States Department of Justice issued a 47-count indictment against nine International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) officials and five executives of FIFA-affiliated sports management firms. The charges the United States pressed included racketeering, wire fraud, and money laundering amounting to $150-million over a 24-year period. That morning, the Swiss Government also arrested seven of the indicted defendants at a Zurich hotel, while holding them for possible extradition to the United States. The United States and Switzerland also announced that criminal investigations into FIFA's 2010 decisions to award the World Cup to Russia for 2018 and to Qatar for 2022 would continue. Is there a basis for the United States’ allegations...

By David Dayen @ddayen
The Obama administration’s desire for “fast track” trade authority is not limited to passing the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In fact, that may be the least important of three deals currently under negotiation by the U.S. Trade Representative. The Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) would bind the two biggest economies in the world, the United States and the European Union. And the largest agreement is also the least heralded: the 51-nation Trade in Services Agreement (TiSA).

Thousands of protesters marched through downtown St. Paul to the State Capitol on Saturday, calling for the cancellation of the proposed Sandpiper oil pipeline that would travel near some of the state’s pristine waters.
Though an independent tally was unavailable for the Tar Sands Resistance Rally, organizers estimated that 5,000 anti-pipeline and climate change activists took part in the colorful and peaceful march, marked by dozens of national speakers and live music and dance. Police reported no arrests.

Friends,
Apparently, Stephen Harper thinks that we can wait 85 years to deal with climate change. Yesterday, he signed on to a pledge to phase out fossil fuels by the year 21001 -- but you and I both know that we can’t wait that long.
We know that we can and need to act now, and that’s exactly what’s happening all across Canada. We are mobilizing to demand a justice-based economy that works for people and the planet.
We know that we’ve already emailed you about this a few times, and it’s for a good reason: We are approaching a historical turning point, and it will take all of us to make the new economy a reality.
It's time to raise our voices. Here's the plan:
On July 4th - Communities across the country will declare that we, the people, are greater than the tar sands. Click here...
