Barcelona Football Club: ITUC Appeals to Voting Members and Fans to Reject Qatar Airways Deal - ITUC OnLine

Brussels, 2 July 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has called on FC Barcelona “socios” (voting members) and fans to end the club’s Qatar Airways sponsorship, saying that the airline is the very worst sponsor for a club with a 100-year tradition of democracy and universality. The appeal comes as an election contest for the club’s Presidency hinges on candidates’ opposition to or support for renewing its controversial sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways.

This weekend is a turning point:

r1

Friends,

I am lost for words after these last three days.

This weekend, people across Canada showed that we are building the kind of climate movement we need: broad, diverse, and powerful.

Today, in a spectacular demonstration of unity and solidarity, over 10,000 people marched together in Toronto for Jobs, Justice and the Climate. This mobilization brought together a truly diverse coalition, from frontline Indigenous communities to Canada’s largest public and private sector unions, students, social justice organizations and grassroots groups mobilizing against destructive industries.

As organizer, Syed Hussan from No One is Illegal put it at the opening assembly: "We want to be free of the terror we feel when we think of the future of our children and the next 7 generations. When we stand together, we have the power to bring change.”

The march was just the final exclamation point on a weekend of deeply moving action.

Listening to Ornette Coleman

Jordy Cummings

Ornette Coleman died in June of a cardiac arrest on the same day as an infamous bad guy actor, Christopher Lee and legendary professional wrestler Dusty Rhodes. One can't help but chuckle at the Colemanesque improvisation of the Grim Reaper. Coleman was perhaps the jazz musician with the most theoretical depth, even if his own cultural production never hit the highs of his early performances for Atlantic Records. Like Godard, Brecht or David Byrne, Coleman was as illuminating -- if not sometimes moreso -- when theorizing his own project, as he was in the project itself. Indeed, the man was so on point, that no less than Jacques Derrida comes off as humble --...

Breaking: students take action across Canada!

r1

Friends,

Something is happening across Canada, right now.

Today, at 1 PM Eastern, university students in 6 Canadian cities confronted leading MP in their offices to demand that our elected officials take real leadership on climate change and champion a justice-based shift toward a clean, renewable economy.

Some of the people students visited include PM Stephen Harper, Thomas Mulcair and Justin Trudeau -- the people who say they want to lead Canada for the years to come.

Our movement is just getting started.

Tomorrow people across Canada, from Atlantic Canada to BC, will stand up to say that their communities are worth more than the tar sands. They'll take to the streets, on bike and on foot, and to the water, in canoes and kayaks, to demonstrate our shared resolve to move past this dirty industry to a just, clean energy economy.

Then on Sunday, the most diverse climate demonstration in Canadian history...
