The Armenian Genocide: An Open Wound
Sungur Savran
To the memory of Stepan Shaumyan, Armenian Bolshevik leader of the Baku Commune in 1918, and of Hrant Dink, Armenian socialist intellectual from Istanbul who, until his assassination in 2007, exerted a Herculean effort to bring the genocide into the centre of attention in Turkey.
On April 24, 1915, hundreds of Armenian intellectuals, politicians and community leaders were rounded in Istanbul (or Constantinople as it was then called in the West) by the Ottoman state, to be subsequently sent to exile from which most never returned. This was the signal that set off a chain of events that ended in a tragedy the like of which has rarely been witnessed in the annals of modern history. The Armenians,...

EARTH DAY
Many consider today to be the anniversary of the birth of the environmental movement. We know that for tribal peoples – the best conservationists and guardians of the natural world – protecting the environment is not a one-off event, but a way of life. As people around the world reflect on the importance of conservation, please stand up for the tribes whose struggle to protect their lands is the biggest conservation battle of all.

Fortress Europe and a Mediterranean Cemetery for Migrants
Cinzia Arruzza
In the night between April 18th and April 19th a boat filled with up to 950 migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea, 70 miles north of Libya, while trying to reach the southern European border. This was not only the greatest tragedy to date involving migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, it is also the latest in a long series of deaths: around 14,600 from 1993 to November, 2012; 900 in little more than a year from January, 2014 to April, 2015, before this latest tragedy.
In the face of between 700 and 900 deaths, it is difficult to write a series of numbers and data, when anger, sadness, and shame would seem to be...
