PP: The hard facts on minimum wage

Good morning:
Please feel free to share this PressProgress news post from late yesterday that packages some startling data from the Canadian Labour Congress' new report on minimum wage in Canada.
5 things you don't know about minimum wage workers in Canada: Why raise the minimum wage? How about because "minimum and low wage jobs [are] becoming the norm"? Or that 35% of Canadians earning under $15 per hour are over 40?

The Politics of Human Rights

David Camfield

There has never been more talk about human rights than there is today. Social media is full of calls to sign petitions or send e-mails about human rights causes. Almost no one says they're not supporters of human rights, from radicals on the left to people on the hard right like Stephen Harper. Governments of Western countries justify war in the name of defending human rights. We now have a Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg.

Defending human rights is necessary. But championing human rights is a completely inadequate way of responding to the biggest crises of our times: the ecological crisis -- above all, climate change -- and socio-economic crises.

Canada, it's time to step into history. The plan for July:

r1

Friends,

Over the past few years, a movement has taken root in Canada.

It started with the leadership of Indigenous communities in Alberta, who experience the worst of tar sands pollution, and has expanded everywhere that tar sands pipelines have been proposed (as well as plenty of places far from pipeline routes).

Now, Canada is at a crossroads. We face a choice between expanding the tar sands beyond our climate limit, or committing to a just transition away from fossil fuels and towards a new, clean energy economy. It’s a choice that we think Canada is ready to make. Just last weekend, 25,000 people marched for that new economy in Quebec City -- and this summer we’re going to take on the tar sands across the entire country.

For 3 days at the beginning of July, we'll show that at this moment in history, the people who want change represent a power greater than anything...

Urgent Action: Make a stand for an open and free West Papua

Survival International We help tribal peoples defend their lives, protect their lands and determine their own futures.

Urgent Action

End 50 years of isolation in West Papua

Please join Survival at a demonstration outside the Indonesian Embassy in London to demand free and open access to West Papua.

The demonstration, organised by Tapol and Survival will be held at 12pm on April 29, 2015.

Join us to call on the Indonesian government to allow free and open access to West Papua for international journalists, humanitarian agencies and human rights organisations. Until Indonesia lifts the repressive restrictions on access to Papua, Indonesian soldiers and police will continue to kill, arrest and torture Papuan tribal people with impunity.

What Comes Next?

r1

Friends,

This past weekend I was marching in Quebec City with over 25,000 people to tell Canada's premiers that they can’t be climate leaders and expand the tar sands. Thousands more across the country -- like you! -- signed on to our petition echoing that message. Tonight, we will be sending it to all of Canada's provincial leaders.

Right now, we don't know much about where the premiers' climate deal is going. Key premiers like Jim Prentice from Alberta and Christy Clark from BC are skipping this climate summit tomorrow, and we know that Ontario and Quebec are signing a deal on carbon pricing.

But whatever the premiers announce, what we do know for sure is that there is a powerful, growing movement across the country that will keep telling provincial and federal leaders that real climate action...

Bolivia’s Voters Reaffirm ‘Process of Change’ But Issue Warnings to the Governing MAS

Richard Fidler

Up to 90 per cent of the electorate voted in Bolivia's "subnational" elections March 29 for governors, mayors and departmental assembly and municipal council members throughout the country. These were the second such elections to be held since the new Constitution came into force in 2009, the first being in 2010.

The Movement for Socialism (MAS) once again emerged as the only party with national representation -- by far the major political force in Bolivia, and far ahead of the opposition parties, none of which has a significant presence in all nine departments. However, in some key contests the voters rebuffed the MAS candidates, most notably for governor in La...
