Podemos and the Catalan Independence Process

The rise of Podemos ("We Can") in the Spanish state -- and of its counterpart Podem in Catalonia -- has presented a new challenge to both the Catalan independence movement and to the traditional left in that subordinated national component of the Spanish state. Pablo Iglesias and other Podemos leaders, while indicating sympathy for self-determination of Catalonia, do not support its independence.

A key issue now on the agenda in Catalonia is how to combine the social emancipatory perspective of Podem/Podemos with the ascendant popular support for sovereignty or independence as registered last November 9 in a referendum that was opposed by the central government in Madrid.

In the following article a leading participant in the revolutionary Marxist...

This $1.2 billion news organization just pulled its money out of fossil fuels:

Friends,

Here's how far we've come in just a couple of years:

One of the world’s most respected and influential news organizations -- the Guardian Media Group -- announced yesterday that it will divest from fossil fuels.

The move follows the launch of The Guardian's own climate change campaign, in partnership with 350.org, to press two of the world’s largest charitable foundations to stop investing in oil, coal, and gas companies.

Click here to join the call for the world's largest charities to divest.

The chairman of the Guardian Media Group called the move a "hard-nosed business decision" that is justified on both ethical and financial grounds. I couldn't agree more.

It was also the second billion-dollar divestment commitment in just two days: Syracuse University in New York also ditched fossil fuels this week, demonstrating once again that cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry is both feasible and responsible.

Now is the time to increase...

Grandmother Serves Time for Critisizing and Trying to Stop Killer Drones

RESIST! , ,
By Joy First, www.popularresistance.org
April 1st, 2015

MAUSTON, WI – Bonnie Block, a Madison, WI grandmother and long-time peace activist, was found guilty of trespassing in a jury trial in the Juneau County Courthouse on Wednesday, April 1, 2015.

The penalty for the charge was a $232 fine or 5 days in the Juneau County Jail. In a moving sentencing statement, Block stated, “I can’t in good conscience pay the fine. It would be giving consent to the outcome of a legal process I believe was unfair and which sets dangerous precedents for those of us engaged in nonviolent civil resistance and seeking justice for victims of US drone warfare.” (See below for complete statement.)

Important Strike in Mexico: Farm Workers Paralyze Baja Farms

Dan La Botz

Thousands of farmworkers in the San Quintin Valley of Baja California, just 185 miles south of the U.S. border, struck some 230 farms, including the twelve largest that dominate production in the region, on March 17 interrupting the picking, packing, and shipping of zucchini, tomatoes, berries and other products to stores and restaurants in the United States. The strikers, acting at the peak of the harvest, were demanding higher wages and other benefits to which they are legally entitled such as membership in the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), the public health system. While there have over the last two decades been several large scale protests by workers in San Quintin, usually...

Israel: Fortress Racism

Reuven Kaminer

Israel sinks deeper and deeper into an abyss of strident chauvinism and endemic racism. Among its Jewish population there is an almost complete consensus that since Israel lives in a dangerous neighborhood it must be always ready on the draw. This consensus is frayed at its edges when social and economic issues are addressed but holds up when security policy is on the table. The war on Gaza last summer was hardly mentioned during the election campaign but it was just plain naïve to believe that the right could be unseated by concentrating on bread and butter issues while leaving the uneven "security" playing field to Benjamin Netanyahu.

On the surface, Israel has many attributes of a normal liberal...

April Fools’! Unfortunately, Federal “Green Budget” is not real

Dear PAOV,

Were you excited to read, in our email earlier today, about a visionary green budget proposed by the federal government? Or did you catch on right away that anything received on April 1st should likely be taken with a grain of salt? We hope you’re not offended by our little prank!

It really shouldn’t be a joke to imagine that the Canadian Government would...
