Green Groups Overjoyed by New Budget Bill, Contains Everything We Ever Wanted

Dear PAOV,

If you could write the federal budget bill, what new laws would it contain? Perhaps an environmental bill of rights to protect Canadians’ rights to healthy air, water and land? Perhaps an act to ensure that all projects are assessed for their positive contributions to the environment, communities and the economy? A law to protect future generations by requiring Canada reduce its greenhouse...

Another International Call for Inquiry Into Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women in Canada

ICTMN Staff

3/31/15

Indigenous leaders in Canada have welcomed yet another report urging the federal government to examine the disproportionate rate of violence against aboriginal women, but the government does not seem any closer to convening one.

This time the call came from the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), which released a report earlier this month and said the lack of a national inquiry to date constitutes a “grave violation of human rights,” according to report authors Niklas Bruun and Barbara Bailey.

“Aboriginal women and girls are more likely to be victims of violence than men or non-Aboriginal women, and they are more likely to die as a result,” said CEDAW members Bruun and Baileyin a statementafter issuing the report on March 6. “Yet, despite the seriousness of the situation, the Canadian State has not sufficiently implemented measures to ensure that cases of missing and murdered Aboriginal women are effectively investigated and prosecuted.”

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has found that 16 percent of murdered women and girls are indigenous, as are 11 percent of those who went missing between 1980 and 2012, theNational Postreported. In comparison, they make up just four percent of the population.

Muslim youth group declares jihad against ISIS

Julia Glum
Posted without permission from International Business Times

A British nonprofit for Muslim youth has launched a "Jihad against ISIS" campaign aimed at dissuading teenagers from joining the Islamic State group. The Muslim Youth League UK declared last weekend "ideological war" against the extremists, who have become known in recent months for robust online recruiting efforts that lure young adults to Syria. The group plans to use social media to spread messages of peace. "All extremists are cancers to society, because they destroy a healthy society," Shayk Rehan Ahmed Raza, the group's president, told STV News. "We have to scream at the top of our lungs that these people are not representative of Muslims."

Stop the Premiers' Pipeline Fast-Track Deal

r1

Friends,

Last week we got some disturbing news: Canada's premiers are writing a national climate deal that could be used as cover to fast track dangerous tar sands pipeline approvals across the country.

On April 14th, the premiers are meeting in Quebec to negotiate. Click here to sign on, and make sure they know that Canada can't lead on climate while digging up the tar sands.

We know that 85% of the tar sands need to stay underground in order to meet Canada's climate obligations. That means winding down pipelines, not building more of them, and committing to leave fossil fuels in the ground.

Big Oil is already planning at least five tar sands export pipelines, including the massive Energy East project. If they get their way, they'll dig up enough dirty tar sands oil to blow away Canada's climate goals.

It's simple: if Canada is building more pipelines, it means we're producing more tar sands...

SYRIZA's Two Months in Government: Difficulties and Challenges

SYRIZA's Two Months in Government:
Difficulties and Challenges

Elena Papadopoulou and Michalis Spourdalakis

The First Round of Negotiations

Almost a month after the agreement of the 20th of February between the new Greek government, the European Institutions and the IMF, we need to know where we stand. "We" in this case is not the government. It is not even Syriza's members and voters. "We" includes all those who understand the necessity of a strong democratic reply to aggressive neoliberalism and the austerity it imposes on the people of Europe, and who perceive the victory of Syriza as a gleam of hope against a conservative and reactionary turn of Europe. It extends to all democratic and politically liberal citizens who worry about the fate of...

New Canadian Counterterrorism Law Threatens Environmental Groups

Geraldine Thomas-Flurer, who campaigns for environmental protection on behalf of indigenous First Nations in Canada, wasn’t surprised when, in 2012, she found out that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had been keeping tabs on her. The Toronto Star that year obtained documents showing that federal police had monitored private meetings held between her coalition and local environmental groups.

Now she just laughs when asked whether she’s comforted by assurances from government officials that new surveillance and policing powers outlined under a proposed Canadian Anti-Terror Law wouldn’t be aimed at peaceful protesters.

The passage of the terrorism bill would represent a new “open season on First Nations who are speaking out,” she says.
