Brazil: The Débâcle of the PT

Alfredo Saad-Filho

Hundreds of thousands of chiefly white middle class protesters took to the streets in Brazil on 15 March in an organized upsurge of hatred against the federal administration led by President Dilma Rousseff of the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores, PT). These protests are far more cohesive and better organized than the previous wave of anti-government demonstrations, in 2013; their demands are unambiguously reactionary, and they include primarily the country's elite.

The 2015 demonstrations erupted in the political vacuum created by the paralysis of Dilma's administration because of its own ineptitude and Brazil's worsening economy. Those difficulties were compounded by aggressive media reporting of the Lava Jato corruption scandal, focusing on a network of firms channelling...

B.C. government seeks to privatize and control teacher professional development

BY TARA EHRCKE | MARCH 27, 2015B.C. Premier Christy Clark and Education Minister Peter Fassbender in 2014

Yesterday the B.C. government introduced Bill 11 -- a new law that will, among other things, change the system of teacher professional development in British Columbia. Without any consultation with teachers or their union, the BCTF, the government is legislating a new system of authorized continuing education that may be required to maintain teacher certification.

Not surprisingly, having been rebuffed by the B.C. courts twice with unilateral changes to teachers' collective agreements, the government is trying a different tack. Leave the collective agreement provisions in place, but add new restrictions through the regulatory framework. Having failed to bargain teacher professional development changes, the government is turning to its tried and true formula: legislate.

The new provisions will depend to a large degree on the accompanying regulations, which of course are not yet known. But the basic framework of the new system looks fairly familiar. It appears to be modelled on the type of mandated professional development requirements that have been put in place for other regulated professions, such as lawyers and nurses. In these frameworks, a certain number of hours of authorized activities are required, sometimes along with a professional development plan, self-reflection, or peer review. What is not yet clear is to what degree the profession itself (teachers) will have control over the authorization process, if any.

Education and Mobilization in Contested Mexico

Education and Mobilization in Contested Mexico:
Situating Ayotzinapa

On September 26, 2014, students from the Ayotzinapa Teachers' College were attacked by police and gunmen in the town of Iguala. Three were killed, dozens injured and 43 student-teachers were taken away, never to be seen again. This atrocity is part of a landscape of violence and impunity carried out through alliances among elements of the Mexican state and organized crime. In response, a national movement of resistance has emerged. This panel of experts on contemporary Mexico explores the context surrounding these events including the rise of drug violence, long standing popular movements among teachers and students, meaningful democracy, and the links between powerful interests in licit and illicit industries.

Mainstream media attempting to criminalize anti-austerity movement

Mainstream media attempting to criminalize anti-austerity movement

Many mainstream media reports onanti-austerity street protests in Montréal over recent days work to criminalize the thousands joining the actions and to justify police violence.

Absent from media reports are any specifics on the injuries taking place due to the multiple police assaults, or any serious info on the heavy use of pepper spray and " rel="nofollow" style="color:rgb(51,102,153);font-weight:bold" target="_blank">flash bang grenades.

Ta blessure de flic, is a social media page that has been set-up for people to share info onpolice brutality and photos of their wounds, working to raise awareness of the real physical repression coming down on the growing anti-austerity...

A View from Burnaby Mountain:
Naomi Klein’s This Changes Everything

Brad Hornick

"The call came to protestors assembled at bore-hole 2 on Burnaby Mountain: ‘Kinder Morgan has arrived! Get your asses down here.’ I ran to the motorcycle and hurried down to Drummond Walk. A few comrades were just starting to follow KM workers -- 2 hardhats with chain saws, a couple management types and a few security guards. I raged internally as I accompanied them into the forest at the ready, but not knowing what the next step was...

"...but then the cavalry arrived, unleashing, screaming like hell and tearing into, with voice and blow-horn and aggression. KM about-faced sheepishly. This was ‘caretaker’ warrior spirit I witnessed -- nothing would be the same...

We Flooded the NEB, Here's What's Next

r1

Friends,

First of all, I wanted to introduce myself: my name is Aurore Fauret and I just joined the 350.org team to support the growing movement to stop the Energy East pipeline and move us past the tar sands.

Second, I've got some good news: We flooded the National Energy Board with over 1,600 applications demanding the NEB consider the massive climate impacts of Energy East.

Two out of every three applications received by the NEB demanded to talk about climate change. That's worth celebrating! We've forced the NEB to make a really a tough choice -– either approve our applications and include the climate impacts of the pipeline in their review, or reject the vast majority of applicants to Energy East and further erode Canadians' trust in the process.

We probably won't hear back from the NEB about our climate applications for several weeks, and then the NEB hearings may not start for...

Vandana Shiva: Our Very Existence on This Planet Is Being Called Into Question

Vandana Shiva delivered a keynote address at the Earth at Risk 2014 conference held in San Francisco, California. Naturally, her speech packed quite a punch. She dismissed conventional measurements of prosperity like GDP, condemned industrial farming as “the single biggest destructive force on the planet today” and even cited a report by the Center for Disease Control that estimates 50 percent of American children will be autistic by 2050.https://youtu.be/rdiSYgac5h8

Dominions Bought-And-Paid-For Supporters vs. Gras

EDUCATE! , ,
By Pontoon, www.bluevirginia.us
March 24th, 2015

Free Nelson attended Thursday night’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) meeting in the Shenandoah Valley. The meeting was designed to hear concerns from the public regarding the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP), and to contribute input towards the Environmental impact study (EIS) FERC is required to conduct.

What we found truly astonishing about this meeting was the lengths to which Dominion Power continues to sink in its efforts to create the appearance of support for its ill-conceived, dirty fossil fuel pipeline. Some of the tactics used by Dominion are eerily similar to a 6-year-old throwing a temper tantrum, and they’re just as unattractive.
