UN Women and Uber – Selling Principles to the Lowest Bidder
Brussels, 13 March 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has described an announcement by the United Nations gender body UN Women of a partnership with the Uber company to “create” a million jobs for women as undermining the very principles of the United Nations. Uber has come under fire in countries around the world for undermining incomes and working conditions of women and men who drive taxis for a living, and faced a string of accusations of union-busting, breaches of privacy, and risks to health and safety.

Bangladesh: Business as Usual as Garment Brands Stall Progress
Brussels, 13 March 2015 (ITUC OnLine): International and European trade union bodies are calling on the European Union to bolster action on workers’ rights and safety in Bangladesh’s garment industry. The Bangladesh government has failed to implement vital labour law reforms, and a compensation fund for victims of the Rana Plaza disaster still remains US$ 9 million short of the target.

PM Harper's dangerous 'secret police' bill

Friends,
By now, you’ve probably heard Stephen Harper’s arguments in favour of a new piece of legislation, called C-51, that threatens to criminalize all of the work we do together.
This bill would recklessly hand over vague new powers to Canada's spies, effectively creating a 'secret police.' The bill is worded so vaguely, it's almost guaranteed to become a tool to target peaceful social movements that threaten the Prime Minister and his powerful friends.
Our movements are about justice. We are transparent, open, people-driven and committed to non-violent, peaceful action. But that hasn't stopped this government from targeting us with illegal and unjustified spying -- including of me in my work supporting First Nations to defend our land, water and indigenous rights.
This bill is an abuse of democracy, and would give new powers to PM Harper, the RCMP and CSIS to target First Nations, the climate movement, and many others. That's why so...

3/10/15Editor’s Note: On Sunday March 8, International Women’s Day, we introduced you to some of the women who are part of the effort to reign in oil and gas development on the Navajo Nation. In our third installment we return to Etta Arviso, who has long fought to retain Navajo identity and culture.
RELATED: On the Front Lines: Diné Women Stand Firm Against Increased, Unfettered Oil Development
Up in northern New Mexico and Arizona, Etta Arviso works with the last of the Navajo Code Talkers. She lobbies for their rights, including housing and veterans’ care, and organizes dinners that bring all the men together.
RELATED: Oil Leases Proliferate in Northwestern New Mexico as Diné and Pueblo Call for Oversight
For Arviso, history is alive. She talks not only of the crucial role the Code Talkers served in World War Two, but also of the Long Walk, the forced removal of Navajo people from Arizona and northwestern New Mexico in the 19th century. In 1864 the U.S. Army marched more than 8,000 Navajo men, women and children to the Bosque Redondo Reservation on Fort Sumner in eastern New Mexico. Four years later the Navajo Nation and the U.S. government signed a treaty allowing the people to begin their “long walk” home.

Urgent Action: World leaders must recognize tribal peoples’ right to hunt
Around the world, tribal peoples are being accused of “poaching” because they hunt their food. This violates their rights under international law and leaves them vulnerable to arrest and beatings, torture and death.
They are better at looking after their environment than anyone else, and yet are often the target of “anti-poaching” drives while the main causes of biodiversity loss, like logging and organized poaching networks, go unaddressed.
On March 25, representatives of countries from around the world will meet at a follow-up conference in Botswana on the illegal wildlife trade. Last year no mention...

"One must know how to employ the kairos [right or opportune moment] of one's forces at the right moment.
It is easy to only lose a little, if one always keeps foremost in the mind the idea that unity is never the trick, but the game."
— Guy Gebord, "Notes on poker."
1. Introduction
The transitional "bridge Agreement" of the 20th of February is a truce intended by the Greek government and welcomed by the other side (the European "institutions"). Within the truce period (the next four months), the conditions for negotiating the next agreement will be shaped. This could mean that everything is still open. However, that is not...
