The essential contribution of our national public broadcaster to Canada’s democracy cannot be overstated and many Fair Vote Canada supporters value the CBC and are concerned about its future.
That is why I would like to draw your attention to the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting and their campaign to Free the CBC from political interference.
Click here to view Friends ad that Canada’s big networks do not want you to see.
Friends is sharing information about Fair Vote Canada with their supporters as well. It’s a collaboration in support of our shared democratic values.
This is an important initiative. And it’s fun too. Please view Friends’ satirical video, sign the petition to Free the CBC, and share their campaign with your network.
Yours sincerely,
Anita Nickerson

Sh*t white feminists need to stop doing

BY ANNE THERIAULT | MARCH 9, 2015

I'm a white feminist, and let me tell you something: white feminism* is pretty bullshit. It's exclusive, oppressive, and serves to further marginalize the people who are most impacted by misogyny. Unfortunately, white feminism is also the western status quo of feminism, meaning that white feminists have the biggest platforms, have increased access to resources and media, and are generally considered to be The Voice of Feminism. In theory, someone truly interested in equality would use these assets to amplify the voices of women of colour. In practice, white supremacy is a real thing and white feminists often seem to forget that their white privilege makes it easy as hell to trample over women of colour as they work to dismantle the patriarchy.
So, in honour of International Women's Day, here is a non-exhaustive list of Shit White Feminists Need to Stop Doing:
Breaking: Energy East application period extended!

Friends,
Good news: we've spooked the National Energy Board. They've just re-opened the application period to intervene in the Energy East pipeline review for one week -- giving Big Oil an opportunity to make up lost ground.
2/3rds of the applications submitted so far have come from the climate movement, and now we have a chance to push that number even higher. Every application submitted puts PM Harper in a serious bind, and pushes our demand for a climate review of Energy East even forward.
This is a simple process that takes a few minutes. Here’s what it takes to apply:
- Click here and open this link for the NEB’s review page.
- Follow this step-by-step guide to apply to the NEB.
- Once you've finished, click here and register your application.
Over 1200 people have already taken 10-15 minutes to file climate applications, and with this extra week we can file hundreds...

Man-made climate change is a major problem for women

Men and women may not always be on the same footing but you would think both sexes would be equal in the face of gigantic floods, typhoons or droughts. Think again.
Countless studies show that natural disasters on average kill more women than men — 90 percent female fatalities in some cases, prevent girls from going to school, increase the threat of sexual assault. And the list goes on.

This Sunday, March 8 is International Women's Day, a day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.
Labour rights and women's rights have been interconnected since the earliest days of the trade union movement. Back in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights. The first Women's Day was designated in 1909 in honour of these pioneers for women's rights.
Fast-forward 106 years, and tremendous gains have been made:

Afghan women are anxious for assurances that their gains will not be compromised in an eventual deal with the Taliban.

"It is necessary that we strengthen women's role from within our civilisation and culture," said Afghan President Ashraf Ghani in his address to women in a gathering ahead of International Women's Day last Thursday in Kabul. "Our Constitution is clear, specific and, thank God, completely Islamic. Our commitment is to implement the Constitution."
As March 8 falls on what is rumoured to be the eve of the first round of negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban, Afghan women's rights activists were anxiously anticipating unadulterated assurances from Ghani to the effect that women's achievements will not be compromised in an eventual peace deal.
Afghan women demand greater say in politicsThough Ghani never directly mentioned the talks, Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah's message read in his absence clearly stated that the government will present a red line on women's rights and will not compromise Afghan women's achievements in exchange for a peace deal.

By Marianela Jarroud, Inter Press Service | ReportSantiago, Chile - Women’s participation in decision-making is highly beneficial and their role in designing and applying public policies has a positive impact on people’s lives, women leaders and experts from around the world stressed at a high-level meeting in the capital of Chile.
“It is not about men against women, but there is evidence to show through research that when you have more women in public decision-making, you get policies that benefit women, children and families in general,” Winnie Byanyima, executive director of Oxfam International, told IPS.
“So women tend, when they’re in parliament, for example, to promote women’s rights legislation. When women are in sufficient numbers in parliaments they also promote children’s rights and they tend to speak up more for the interests of communities, local communities, because of their close involvement in community life,” she added.
