Greece-EU Accord: IMF should not play politics with European recovery, says ITUC - ITUC OnLine

Greece-EU Accord: IMF should not play politics with European recovery, says ITUC

Brussels, 27 February 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has strongly criticised the negative attitude the International Monetary Fund has taken towards the agreement reached on 24 February between Eurozone finance ministers and the Greek government for a four-month extension of the current European crisis loan to Greece.

A written statement from IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde (http://www.imf.org/external/np/sec/pr/2015/pr1571.htm ) condemned the agreement because it does not contain “clear assurances” from the Greek government that it will implement measures committed to by the former government defeated in January elections, including in the area of labour market reforms.

For Women, the World Remains an Extremely Dangerous Place

VOICESMarch 5, 2015 by Kelly Askin Open Society Justice Initiative Add your voice

For Women, the World Remains an Extremely Dangerous Place

In every nation on earth, sexual violence within and outside of conflict occurs far more commonly than is reported.

The failure worldwide to prevent and punish sexual violence is more than dire—it is downright shameful. The so-called Islamic State (“so-called” because they do not reflect core Islamic values and are assuredly not a state) viciously slaughters, rapes, enslaves, and forces into “marriage” tens of thousands of women and girls in Iraq and Syria. The Boko Haram terrorist group kidnaps hundreds of school girls in Nigeria. Rape and sexual slavery is epidemic in the Central African Republic. Armed groups in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) continue to commit mass rape with impunity. From France to China, India to Kenya, Bosnia to the United Kingdom, Colombia to Burma, Sudan to Russia—to be more specific, in every nation on earth—sexual violence within and outside of conflict occurs far more commonly than is reported.

Hi all:
Canadian job quality is in a downward spiral under Stephen Harper's government, according to a new report from CIBC.
Here's the bleak news in four startling charts -- along with some pointed reminders of how the new data flies in the face of the record the Conservatives regularly tout to the public:

Please share if you can - thanks for the help, as always.

Friend --

The City of Victoria is currently consulting residents on the 2015 Budget and 2015-2018 Strategic Plan. This plan will shape how the city spends more than $800-million over the next four years. So your input is crucial.

  • Do you want more and better bike lanes or less action on active transportation?
  • Are you satisfied with the city's current support for affordable housing or should we do more?
  • Is the park system and recreational facilities like the Crystal Pool adequate, or can improvements be made and new parks created?
  • How much tax are your prepared to pay for high-quality public services and support to community and arts organizations?

These are all part of the draft Strategic Plan and Budget. Your input will shape the path the City takes in the years ahead.

So...

Right to Strike Re-affirmed at ILO - ITUC OnLine

INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION

Right to Strike Re-affirmed at ILO

Brussels, 25 February 2015 (ITUC OnLine): A breakthrough has been made at the International Labour Organization following two years during which employers at the International Labour Organization brought the UN body’s global supervisory system to a standstill, in an attempt to eliminate decades of ILO jurisprudence supporting the right to strike. Union and employer representatives have now reached an understanding at a special ILO meeting this week to end the impasse, based on recognition of the right to take industrial action, backed by explicit recognition from governments of the right to strike, linked to ILO Convention 87 on Freedom of Association. The agreement comes on the back of a hugely successful international union mobilisation on 18 February, which involved more than 100 actions in over 60 countries in support of the right to strike.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said,...

This week @ rabble.ca: Harper ignores reports on violence against Indigenous women

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

27 Feb 2015

Hey rabble readers,

An alarming study released this week shows that governments in Canada have repeatedly ignored expert recommendations to stop violence against Indigenous women and girls. There are TEN comprehensive reports alone that the Harper government is just ignoring. Learn more about why this problem exists, and what's important in the urgent call for a national inquiry, in an interview with Pam Palmater.

Canada's welfare system and its discriminatory practices against First Nations families has been compared to the legacy of the residential school system. This spring, a ruling on a landmark human rights case may change that. Read about the fight to end discrimination against First Nations children in Canada in our legal column this month.

Far-right commentator Ezra Levant is raising thousands of dollars for his Conservative news website. February 25 was the National Adjunct Day of Action. Adjuncts, sessionals and contract academic faculty carry our institutions of higher learning on their shoulders -- and the way they are treated is a national disgrace. Find more about precarious labour in the academy -- and what needs to change -- in our ongoing coverage.

In 1917, women marched for bread and roses. In 2015, we march to reclaim our bodies, our territories and our communities. In her column, Julie Devaney reflects on the interlinked struggles that bring women together on International Women's Day.

The Dalhousie dentistry scandal raised the question: what is restorative justice? On this month's rabble radio, we're handing the microphone to Moira Donovan who investigated the issue and shares some of the answers she found.

What is it like to be targeted by CSIS? Activist Ken Stone knows firsthand, and he's launched a formal complaint. Read about his experience here.

Luger: Sing Our Rivers Red brings Awareness of Missing, Murdered Indigenous Women in U.S.

Chelsey Luger

By now, you may have seen the hashtag #MMIW. It stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. The number of North American Indigenous women who have gone missing or have been murdered in the past decade is approaching several thousand. It’s alarming, to say the least, and nothing short of an urgent matter. The problem is real, and it deserves more attention.

A quick search of the term “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women” right here onICTMNwill help explain the gravity of the situation. You’ll find a host of articles dating as far back as 2010 which highlight some of the events, progress, and struggles surrounding the issue. A scan of these headlines will also reveal another factor: Though the problem transcends borders, awareness of MMIW is much more prevalent in Canada than stateside.

But that’s changing.

In February, a group of young and incredibly powerful Native women – Hannabah Blue, Tanaya Winder, and Patty Stonefish – planned and hosted a week of events in Fargo-Moorhead with the purpose of spreading awareness of the missing and murdered on this side of the border. The week of events was titled, ‘Sing Our Rivers Red.’

With hundreds of attendees and participants, it was a resounding success, and it’s safe to say they achieved their goal of spreading awareness and uniting disparate voices.

Events included a hip-hop concert with performances by Frank Waln, Mic Jordan and Young Jibwe; documentary screenings; poetry readings; an earring art exhibition; an Arming Sisters self-defense workshop; and finally a march on Valentine ’s Day where dozens braved the bitter prairie temperatures to show support for the cause.

The organizers caught the attention of area officials, too. Mayors of the cities of Fargo, Moorhead, Dillworth and West Fargo listened to their presentation at a Fargo Native American Commission meeting, and immediately signed a proclamation acknowledging February 14 an official awareness day for murdered and missing indigenous women, calling for more resources to “address the colonial gender based violence.”

I sat down with Hannabah, Tanaya and Patty in order to learn more about their efforts. Here’s a little bit of that conversation.

Austerity Strangles Ontario: the TA strikes in Context

~~~~~~~~~~~~~(((( T h e B u l l e t ))))~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Socialist Project e-bulletin .... No. 1088 .... March 6, 2015
_________________________________________________
Austerity for working people and the accumulation of wealth in the corporate sector was sold as short-term pain for long-term gain. What we got of course was pain now, pain later, and never-ending pain if we don't organize to end it. The continuous pressure on public and private sector workers seems now to be leading to resistance, especially in the public sector. Yet though the latter struggles directly involve the state, unions are taking them on one at a time and this means that they remain fragmented, isolated, defensive. To its credit, the CUPE locals have framed the current strikes at the University of Toronto and York in these broader terms, emphasizing the growing precariousness of work in this formerly ‘privileged’ sector, the impact on the quality of...
