This week @ rabble.ca: A primer on Harpers new anti-terror legislation

rabble.ca - News for the rest of us

20 Feb 2015

Hi rabble readers,

What makes Stephen Harper think that we're in dire need of new legislation to fight terrorism? "Anti-terror" Bill C-51 grants new powers to already hyperactive state security agencies -- and baits as "soft on terror" anyone who questions the bill's necessity. Get a primer on key provisions in the bill and find all you need to know in our in-depth coverage.

We have some good news... and some really, really, downright awful news. According to a new poll, support for the Harper Conservatives is at its highest since the 2011 election. But the good news is 98% of rabble.ca readers would not vote for the Conservatives. Will you help us reach a lot more people before election day in 2015? Support our work so we can counter Harper's destructive plan for Canada!

rabble.ca and Octopus Books are co-hosting the panel discussion "The Harper record on trial," to better understand how Harper has changed Canada, and to discuss how we should respond at this critical time for our country. Join us in Ottawa Feb. 24 to hear three prominent reporters and writers, Karl Nerenberg, Mark Bourrie and Maude Barlow, speak about Canada under Harper. Read an excerpt from Karl Nerenberg's new book and get more details about the event here!

As Target employees continue working to close down the store outlets across Canada, one employee of Target Canada is documenting work at Target during its 16-week liquidation. You can find their behind-the scenes report here.

Syriza Can Show ‘Another Energy is Possible’

New Government in Greece is committed to ‘ecological transformation’

Sean Sweeney

During its first days in office, Syriza has taken actions that suggest it is willing to confront the EU's neoliberal approach to energy and to embark on a new course. New Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has also stated his government will restore collective bargaining agreements and stop 300,000 planned layoffs.

The Syriza government has said it will stop the proposed sell off of the Public Power Corporation (PPC) which is 51 per cent publicly owned but had been targeted for full-on privatization in 2016. "We will halt immediately any privatization of PPC," Energy Minister Panagiotis Lafazanis told Greek television a few hours before officially taking...

Participatory Democracy In El Salvador

CREATE! , , ,
By Beverly Bell, www.otherworldsarepossible.org
February 18th, 2015

Estela Hernandez is both a member of the national assembly and a leader in the transformational social movement, La Coordinadora of the Lower Lempa and the Bay of Jiquilisco in rural El Salvador. Here, Hernandez talks about a radical vision and practice of direct, participatory democracy by the citizens in the government of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, or FMLN.

Beverly Bell: Please give us your vision of power.

Estela Hernandez: Well, for us power is holistic. It is completely rooted in the people. There is a lot of wisdom in people, and so what leaders have to do is be with the people, listen to the people, and address the issues that the people raise, because together, we collectively build the alternatives that actually work. Anything that is done from an office is not going to coincide with reality. So we’re building from the people up.

That characterizes the organization where I received my education, La Coordinadora. Our strategic development plans arise from huge assemblies. We can spend up to six months building our strategies, because we need input from all sectors and communities. This plan must work out for us, but it’s also important that it is taken up at the national governmental level, to inform the administration’s five-year plan. During the last term [of Mauricio Funes of the FMLN, 2009-2014], the government launched the open social dialogue and heard from different sectors: peasants, industrialists, academics, community development associations, water committees, environmentalists. What progress the government made was because of what the people said.

webinarOn February 12, Fair Vote Canada hosted a webinar featuring NDP Democratic Reform Critic Craig Scott, Liberal Democratic Reform Critic Scott Simms, and Green Party Deputy Leader and Democratic Reform Critic Bruce Hyer.

Each MP was given ten minutes to present their position and their party's position on proportional representation heading into the 2015 federal election. The rest of the webinar was devoted to your questions, and to a discussion between the party representatives.

What we captured was an historic conversation. The parties talked candidly about their common ground, their differences, and most importantly, about how they can cooperate to make sure 2015 is the last unfair election.

Fed Gov Counts Temporary Foreign Workers in Jobs-Created Ledger

The real job picture might not be so rosy.

By Jeremy J. Nuttall, Today, TheTyee.ca

The federal government routinely boasts that it has created more than a million jobs over the last seven years. But the job creation numbers the government cites also include temporary foreign workers -- non-Canadians or residents brought to the country to work at jobs that employers here say they can't fill.

By including those temporary workers in the country's job creation numbers, the government runs the risk of providing misleading information about the true state of the labour market, said a labour expert.

Kendra Strauss, an assistant professor of labour studies at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, said lumping foreign workers in with figures for all new jobs could provide a false picture of the labour market.

"There is a strong chance, in fact, that those numbers have influenced employment figures," Strauss said. "I think that there's a lot more work that needs to be done to try and map out what changes occurred in what sector at what time."

In a story about overall job creation numbers published last Monday in The Tyee, Unifor economist Jim Stanford said about one in five of Canada's new jobs created since 2008 went to a temporary foreign worker.

The federal government says 1.2 million jobs were created under its watch, meaning that about 240,000 of the positions would have gone to temporary foreign workers, not to Canadians or permanent residents, Stanford estimated.

Energy East is facing some mighty foes:

r1

Friends,

Energy East faces some mighty foes -- namely us, the growing Canadian climate justice movement.

In just two weeks, the Energy East People’s Intervention has filed hundreds of applications to intervene in the National Energy Board’s review of the pipeline.

The NEB will have to review every application we file. When they're done, they'll need to decide if they are going to put Big Oil's agenda ahead of the safety of our communities and the future of our planet.

Applying to intervene will force PM Harper’s government to make public their opposition to a sound, transparent, comprehensive review of the biggest tar sands pipeline ever proposed -- and that’s the first step to undermining their legitimacy, and stopping this project for good.

Click here and follow the step by step instructions to file a climate application with the NEB.

Global Right to Strike Action Sends Clear Message

Brussels, 19 February 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The 18 February global day of action to support the right to strike has proven to be a huge success, with more than 100 activities around the world reported to the ITUC. Unions in over 60 countries took action, with support in many cases from politicians, human rights organisations and community groups.

Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary said, "Workers and their communities are united in their determination to defend the right to strike against concerted moves by radical employer groups to end the rule of law at work. Governments are on notice that voters won't tolerate stripping away this most basic of rights, which is a foundation of democracy. And responsible bosses need to send a clear message to the radical employer fringe that workers too have human rights."
