Thomas Sankara and Burkina Faso's
"Black Spring"

Ernest Tate

A press report in 1983 that a popular uprising in Upper Volta, a small and poor land-locked country in Western Africa had led to an obscure, but charismatic army officer becoming head of state was truly inspiring news for all those looking for some kind of breakthrough against imperialism in that part of the world. It had come after the depressing news that Margaret Thatcher's Britain had defeated Argentina in the Malvinas and Ronald Reagan's America had crushed Grenada, a clear message to the world that, on a moment's notice, imperialism would brutally crush anything that threatened its power. But because the American empire had been taken by surprise by the Cuban revolution twenty-four years earlier,...

Here's how you can plug in on Global Divestment Day:

Friends,

Some weeks it’s hard to keep up with how quickly the world is changing.

Yes, part of that is the climate crisis: we live in a world that’s been profoundly and dangerously altered. But the politics of climate change are changing too, and some weeks you can feel a really tangible shift in what is possible and what is not.

This is one of those weeks, and Global Divestment Day is a chance to be part of that shift. Next Friday, we’re changing the game and putting fossil fuels on the defensive.

Click here to find a Global Divestment Day event near you on February 13th.

Want to really feel the world changing under your feet? There's nothing like taking action in person. But even if you can't make it to a Global Divestment Day event next week, you can still be part of this movement and this moment. Here's how:

  1. Make...

Raven mine application submitted for assessment by environmental office

A provincial regulator's assessment of a mine that could bring three truckloads of coal to Port Alberni each hour is underway.

Public input on the Raven Underground Coal Project is expected to begin in March if the application proceeds.

On Jan. 30 Compliance Energy submitted the project to the Environmental Assessment Office, opening up a 30-day period for the regulator to determine if the application has addressed potential effects of the development.

The project proposes to produce 1 million tonnes of metallurgical coal annually...

Environmental Justice, the Tar Sands, and Indigenous Rights

LeftStreamed — Recorded in Toronto, 1 February 2015

Environmental Justice, the Tar Sands, and Indigenous Rights

Tar Sands extraction projects, located primarily in Treaty 6 and 8, have radically damaged and contaminated a huge area of land in so-called Alberta, and poisoned the Athabasca watershed. As a result of the toxic operations, some Indigenous communities are experiencing unusually high rates of rare cancers and other illnesses. Traditional ways of life are also at risk as hunting, fishing, and collecting medicinal plants is becoming more difficult in polluted waters and lands. These lands are the traditional territories of a number of Indigenous Nations whose right to hunt, fish, and live are protected by Treaties, which are currently being violated.

The Fight Against Street Deaths in Toronto

John Clarke

The twin agendas of urban redevelopment and austerity have increased the scale of the homeless crisis in Toronto. Over 4,000 people cram into the emergency shelters every night and many more try to survive out on the streets. This situation raises the question of what lengths the agenda of austerity can be taken to. If people are allowed to freeze to death for lack of basic shelter then we have moved beyond reduced entitlement and arrived at a situation of reckless and lethal social abandonment.

As the New Year got underway, four homeless men perished in Toronto within a less than two week period. Two froze to death, one burned lighting a fire to try...

Time to Turn up the Heat on Energy East. Phase two:

r1

Friends,

Earlier this week a group of organziers in Calgary and I hand delivered 106,000+ messages to the National Energy Board demanding a climate review of the Energy East pipeline.

Gathering these messages was Phase 1 of what we've been calling the People's Intervention, and now it's time to launch Phase 2. The NEB has opened its application period for the Energy East review, and we want to file thousands of applications from people who want the NEB to consider climate change. We want to force force the NEB to choose: either listen to people or listen to polluters.

Here's the plan for Phase 2.

First, we're going to organize People's Intervention Gatherings to file hundreds of applications en masse to the NEB demanding to intervene on climate. These gatherings will be a chance to build organizing power and connect and deepen the climate movement across Canada,...
