MP to lecture university students on "why Stephen Harper is good for science"

Good afternoon,
The subject of a Tory MP's university lecture this Thursday was easy to refute in our latest post below.

Given the government's well-documented "war on science" -- from cuts to research funding, facilities and government scientist jobs -- and their all around track record on freedom of expression and critical research, this post might be of interest to your members.

Ben's E-News: Protecting forests and farmland from urban sprawl

NationBuilder r1 Enjoying a hike in the Sooke Hills. Protecting wilderness areas
is a big benefit of urban containment.

Friend --

Right now, the Capital Regional District (CRD) is consulting residents on the Regional Sustainability Strategy (RSS), to guide land use decisions from the Saanich Peninsula to Victoria to Port Renfrew on the west coast.

The RSS will either strengthen the policy of urban containment, mandating that new housing and development be concentrated in existing population centres, or it will provide a green light to urban sprawl, extending pavement and development into the wilderness areas and farmland of the capital region.

I strongly support a policy of urban containment.

Protecting forests and farmland from urban sprawl makes sense for a number of reasons. It conserves wilderness areas for the ecological value of maintaining plant and animal habitat, protecting...

Seizing the Opportunity to Fight Austerity

An Interview with Alexis Tsipras

Alexis Tsipras is the leader of the Coalition of the Radical Left in Greece (Syriza), who recently was elected Prime Minister. This interview was conducted in October 2014 in Athens by Haris Golemis, who is an economist, Director of the Nicos Poulantzas Institute (Greece), and member of the Central Committee of Syriza. It was translated by Maria Choupres, and first published in the Transform Network Yearbook for 2015.

Haris Golemis (HG): Just three years ago, Syriza's presence in Greece's political landscape was quite small. Today, Syriza is predicted to be the frontrunner in the next elections -- making you the next Prime Minister of Greece. What factors do you believe have led to Syriza's meteoric...

The Monster of Soma Rears Its Head

Sungur Savran

The AKP government in Turkey and, in particular, its undisputed leader, Tayyip Erdogan, president of the republic since last August, are usually remembered by the international public for their brazen violation of political and civil rights, their brutality in dealing with the Gezi revolt of June-September 2013, their unabashed support for the sectarian war waged against the Syrian regime by the various offshoots of the Al Qaeda movement and their growing tendency to impose Islamic rules on public life in Turkey, safely the most secular country in the Muslim world. Little is known about the indisputable class nature of this government: how, basing itself solidly on the reactionary labour legislation established by the military junta of...

A once in a generation opportunity.

r1

Dear friends,

We are standing in a window of opportunity -- a once-in-a-generation opportunity to totally overhaul our energy system.

The climate movement is on the rise, people power is beating back extreme energy from New York to Scotland, and renewable energy is cheaper than ever before. At the same time, tumbling oil prices -- which conventional wisdom says is bad news for the climate -- mean that the vast profits that underpin the fossil fuel industry’s power are on unusually shaky ground.

Suddenly fossil fuels are on the defensive. Suddenly tar sands and fracking don’t look like such hot investments anymore. Respectable, prudent fund managers are seriously considering taking their money out of fossil fuels, and many of them have already done so.

Will you help us seize the moment? In less than two weeks, fossil fuel divestment supporters from around the world will come together with a single message: Fossil fuels are...

Ecological Economics and Changing Everything

Patricia Perkins

I would like to thank and acknowledge the First Nations of the territories where we live and are meeting, the Anishinaabe Mississauga, Seneca, Huron-Wendat, ‘Neutrals,’ and other peoples whose ancestors lived here. The land claim of the Mississaugas of the New Credit, relating to the Crown's 1805 acquisition of land running from Ashbridge's Bay westward to the mouth of the Credit River, and extending 28 miles northward, is still under negotiation. Toronto owes its location and earliest traditions as a meeting place to the aboriginal peoples who developed sustainable ways of living and welcomed settlers here. The appalling treatment of aboriginal peoples by settlers is an ongoing disgrace which is intertwined in many ways with the economic, political,...
