Why the Whole World is Watching Greece
Lee Sustar
The Coalition of the Radical Left, or Syriza, is favoured to win parliamentary elections on January 25, giving it a strong chance to form a new government that could confront the catastrophic austerity agenda that has plunged Greece into severe economic and social crisis. Here, Lee Sustar (from the Socialist Worker, where this article first appeared) answers questions about the rise of Syriza and what a victory for it on January 25 would mean.
Why is so much attention focused on the Greek elections?
It may seem surprising that an election in a small country of less than 12 million people could create high anxiety in government ministries in Berlin and Paris and at the European...

BC Forest TenuBill 8 is dangerous and outrageous

For example, a corporation may apply to the government for a TFL, notify (not consult with) the public asking for feedback within a short period of time, and, then, the corporation reports back to government telling it what it heard from the public.
This legislation is TFL-rollover for the benefit of corporations at the expense of First Nations and communities at the discretion of Cabinet with no quid pro quo for the public (e.g., 30% takeback of volume; upgrade to existing mills, building of a new mill, etc)). Also there is no requirement that timber from the TFL be tied to and directed to local mills for local employment. First Nations and communities do not have sufficient licences to rollover to TFLs.
Having cut back budgets by 52% for forests, parks and environment and consequently having rendered dysfunctional the management of renewable resources, this government now implements the final cut and privatizes the forests under the guise of area-based management, which they claim is better than volume-based management.

Noam Chomsky: Charlie Hebdo outrage demonstrates Wes

Americans and other westerners ignore atrocities committed by their own governments because government officials and the media have a narrow definition of terrorism, said Noam Chomsky.
To demonstrate, the linguist and political scientist compared two reports by the New York Times’ veteran correspondent Steven Erlanger — one following the Paris attacks and another from an April 1999 missile attack by NATO forces on Serbian state television headquarters.
Erlanger reported at the time that the U.S. and NATO defended the missile strike, which killed 16 journalists and knocked the station off the air, saying the TV station was a legitimate target because it helped promote the regime of Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.
“There were no demonstrations or cries of outrage, no chants of ‘We are RTV,’ no inquiries into the roots of the attack in Christian culture and history,” Chomsky said. “On the contrary, the attack on the press was lauded. The highly regarded U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, then envoy to Yugoslavia, described the successful attack on RTV as ‘an enormously important and, I think, positive development,’ a sentiment echoed by others.”
The station’s general manager was eventually sentenced by the European Court of Human Rights to 10 years in prison for failing to evacuate the building, but the International Criminal Tribunal concluded the NATO attack was not a crime and the civilian deaths were not “clearly disproportionate.”
Chomsky said other attacks – including the 2011 slaughter of 77 people by “Christian ultra-Zionist extremist and Islamophobe” Anders Breivik – have failed to spark much outrage or probing analysis of the roots of Christian terrorism.
“Also ignored in the ‘war against terrorism’ is the most extreme terrorist campaign of modern times — Barack Obama’s global assassination campaign targeting people suspected of perhaps intending to harm us some day, and any unfortunates who happen to be nearby,” Chomsky said.
He reminded readers of the 50 civilians killed last month in a U.S.-led bombing raid in Syria, which he said was barely reported.

Published: 19 January 2015Extreme inequality isn't just a moral wrong. We know that it hampers economic growth and it threatens the private sector's bottom line.Winnie ByanyimaExecutive Director, Oxfam International
The combined wealth of the richest 1 percent will overtake that of the other 99 percent of people next year unless the current trend of rising inequality is checked, Oxfam warned today ahead of the annual World Economic Forum meeting in Davos.
The international agency, whose executive director Winnie Byanyima will co-chair the Davos event, warned that the explosion in inequality is holding back the fight against global poverty at a time when 1 in 9 people do not have enough to eat and more than a billion people still live on less than $1.25-a-day.
Byanyima will use her position at Davos to call for urgent action to stem this rising tide of inequality, starting with a crackdown on tax dodging by corporations, and to push for progress towards a global deal on climate change.
Wealth: Having It All and Wanting More, a research paper published today by Oxfam, shows that the richest 1 percent have seen their share of global wealth increase from 44 percent in 2009 to 48 percent in 2014 and at this rate will be more than 50 percent in 2016. Members of this global elite had an average wealth of $2.7 million per adult in 2014.

International Criminal Court Launches Probe Into Israeli War Crimes In Palestine

ICC Launches Probe Into Israeli War Crimes In Palestine
Chief prosecutor says preliminary probe is procedural move to establish whether a formal investigation is required
Israel’s fear that Palestinian recognition by the International Criminal Court would bring unwelcome scrutiny of its military actions took a step closer to fruition on Friday, when the the ICC announced a preliminary probe into possible war crimes committed in occupied territories.
Chief prosecutor Fatou Bensouda vowed “full independence and impartiality” in “examining the information available.” The probe was procedural, she said, and would determine whether evidence of possible war crimes by Israel or by Palestinian entities required formal investigation.
The announcement follows the Palestinian Authority’s agreeing to the court’s founding treaty and recognizing its jurisdiction dating back to the eve of last summer’s Gaza war. Israel is not party to the treaty, nor is the United States.
Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas signed the treaty over the fierce objections of Israel and the U.S., after a U.N. Security Council resolution setting a deadline for Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied since 1967 failed to achieve sufficient votes. Abbas has been under heavy domestic pressure to indict Israel through the ICC after Israel’s 50-day military campaign in Gaza, during which some 2,200 Palestinians and 72 Israelis were killed.
Israel retaliated to Abbas’ decision by freezing the transfer of more than $100 million in tax revenues owed to the Palestinians, and Tel Aviv’s supporters on Capitol Hill are pressing for the U.S. to cut funding to the Palestinian Authority.
