Things are changing … together we have helped to bring some communities back from the brink of extinction and prevented the annihilation of many more. Here are some of the ways you have helped tribal peoples in 2014:

Dene at highway site for one month to protect their land from oil and uranium extraction

The Dene checkpoint continues on Highway 955.
https://intercontinentalcry.org/northern-trappers-alliance/
For ongoing updates on the situation, please see their Facebook page Holding the line - Northern Trappers Alliance.
A group of Dene trappers is maintaining a presence on the side of Highway 955 near La Loche, Saskatchewan to highlight the impact of oil and mineral exploration on the land their people have lived from for centuries. La Loche is located in Treaty 8 territory about 600 kilometres north of Saskatoon and about 100 kilometres east of Fort McMurray.
On November 22, the trappers set up a peaceful blockade on the highway to stop vehicles from companies that are drilling for minerals, oil or uranium and disrupting their trapping area. Their stated intention was to hold the blockade until Christmas or beyond.
The next day, the Council of Canadians Saskatoon chapter issued a statement of solidarity highlighting, "We acknowledge the right of the Dene people to self-determination on their land and, in particular, the right of those who live closest to the land to determine what types of development do and do not occur on their land." The chapter also made a donation of $200 to the camp.
But by December 1, the RCMP had served an injunction against the blockade on behalf of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure. Despite the police towing away their camper-trailer, the group has maintained a checkpoint on the highway since then.
Among the issues the Dene have been drawing attention to is the permit granted the Calgary-based energy company Cenovus for a 30,000 barrel per day tar sands operation which would include nearby Axe Lake, the impacts of the Cluff Lake uranium mine about 60 kilometres outside of La Loche, and Kelowna-based Fission Uranium surveying to set up a mine in the Athabasca Basin.
To see a 6-minute video that highlights how companies have disrespected the Dene people, trespassed on their territory, ripped apart their land, and left oil barrels and other industrial waste in nature, please click here. The video concludes with the message, "The Northern Trappers Alliance wants to be consulted by industry and the community leaders. They want the industrial waste that has been left behind cleaned up and that the Dene people decide how to use their land."
The Northern Trappers Alliance is still in need of our support and is seeking donations and supplies. A fundraiser to support this cause will take place on Friday January 9 at 7 pm at The Exchange in Regina. The Council of Canadians Regina chapter has been helping to promote this. For more information on that event, please click here.

As gift-giving season wraps up, consider a contribution to Survival in lieu of a gift. As I mentioned in previous emails, without their ancestral land, the Guarani in Brazil cannot survive.
We need your support now.
Guarani leaders and spokespeople are being killed one by one, their children are dying of malnutrition, and they suffer one of the highest suicide rates in the world. We need your help to fight Brazil’s worst humanitarian crisis and other urgent and horrific humanitarian crises around the world.
Your support at this time is vital. Help us reach our...

Partners in Crime:
The Mexican state, North American Capitalism, and the 43 Missing Students
The signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement came with the promise of prosperity and jobs for all and the extension of human rights. These are, it needs hardly saying, promises unkept. On September 26th 2014, over 100 students from a rural teacher's college were passing through the nearby town of Iguala in Guerrero en route to a demonstration in Mexico City. Three were killed along with three bystanders and 43 are still missing. The families of the students continue to demand that their children be returned alive.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE UNION CONFEDERATION
Lima climate conference deceives, but not the climate movement Brussels, 14 December 2014 (ITUC OnLine) – Lima/Brussels – With governments ending yet another Climate conference in Lima, Peru, the trade union movement has to express its deep concerns on the low path of ambition that has been shown by negotiators and this despite the communication efforts deployed by many to dress the Lima deal as a step in the right direction. “Governments have decided to ignore our calls to promote ambition before 2020 –a critical aspect for growing jobs in climate-sound sectors, and fundamental for protecting workers in the transformation of our economies”, said Sharan Burrow. “ Rather, they have played again the lowest possible ambition scenario and postponed for Paris critical discussions about how will they manage to stay below 2°C”. The trade union movement also shared deep dissatisfaction on the way in which the process has been handled.Read more: Lima climate conference deceives, but not the climate movement - ITUC OnLine

Supply Chains, Forced Labour and Climate Action top ITUC 2015 Agenda
Brussels, 18 December 2014 (ITUC OnLine): Tackling exploitation in global supply chains, campaigning against modern slavery and action for industrial transformation to reduce carbon emissions will be “frontlines” for action in 2015, following the ITUC’s annual General Council meeting which ended on 18 December in Brussels.
“We have an ambitious work programme for the coming year, following through on our agenda to build workers’ power which we set out at our Berlin Congress last May”, said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. “The scale of exploitation in global supply chains, the acceptance of modern slavery in the world economy and the failures of government and much of industry to face the reality of destructive climate change will be centrepieces of an ambitious ITUC agenda in the coming year. With our national affiliates and regional structures, our global union federation partners and in alliance with others, we will hold governments and employers to account for violations of workers’ rights whenever and wherever they happen. The challenges are substantial, and we are ready to overcome them as a united and determined global trade union movement.”

Come Clean Prime Minister Harper
Who paid off Prime Minister Harper’s campaigns that first put him into power?
Did oil and gas companies and their executives pay off Harper’s costs? Did foreign companies? Did China-owned companies?
PM Harper refuses to tell us who paid off hundreds of thousands of dollars of his campaign costs to become party leader.
What has PM Harper done for these secret donors? Is he pushing pipelines and refusing to restrict oil and gas companies or combat climate change to pay back his secret donors?
Did he weaken federal environmental protection laws in dangerous ways to pay back his secret donors? Has he muzzled federal government scientists to pay back his secret donors?
Is he paying back his secret donors by signing trade deals that allow foreign companies to attack Canada’s environmental protection, consumer protection, labour, health and safety laws?
Is Stephen Harper the best Prime Minister big business money can buy?
