Arrest of Hong Kong Union Leaders Imminent

Brussels, 10 January 2015 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has been informed that top officials of the Hong Kong trade union movement are facing imminent arrest for their support for the “Umbrella” movement. The names of HKCTU officials Lee Cheuk-yan (General Secretary) and Mung Siu-tat (Executive Director) are included on a list of persons who are to be summoned to police stations where they will be arrested.

Commissioner of Police Andy Tsang recently announced that the police would arrest the “key organizers” of the Umbrella Movement within three months. Several other members of the HKCTU were arrested during the clearance of the peaceful assembly in the Admiralty area of Hong Kong.

The ITUC calls on the Hong Kong authorities to refrain from this or any further repression of freedom of speech and assembly, and is requesting both the ILO and the UN Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and association, Maina Kiai, to intervene with the authorities in support.

Breakthrough in Greece? Austerity and Solidarity

International Union of Food Workers

Greece will hold parliamentary elections on January 25 and Syriza, the left-wing party which has consistently called for debt restructuring and an end to austerity, is leading the polls. The IMF-European Commission-European Central Bank (Troika) are warning of the ‘threat’ of Syriza coming to power and have forcefully indicated their support for Greece's ruling coalition by conditioning further financial support on the re-election of a pliable government. A Syriza victory indeed threatens the suffocating grip of the European and global austerity regime, and for that reason should be welcomed and actively supported.

For the last four years, a succession of aggressively harsh austerity programs have been imposed on the country by the Troika...

URGENT: Storm in Gaza

Action Alert

Humanitarian relief aid urgently needed in storm-battered Gaza

Please act now: Together we can help save lives

Take Action!

FacebookTwitter iconForward

Dear PAOV,

For nine days in November, we had the privilege of being part of the Washington State Physicians for Social Responsibility Health Delegation to Gaza. To be in Gaza so soon after last summer’s devastating war was to catch a glimpse –through the heart-wrenching stories we heard and the massive destruction we saw – of the grotesque horror of those 51 days in July and August.

Now, six months later, as a winter storm sweeps the area, we are hearing reports from friends and colleagues of extremely dire conditions. The ongoing siege of Gaza means that a lack of electricity, heating oil, potable water, sewage facilities, garbage collection and other essential infrastructure is exacerbating the conditions of an environmental health disaster. Tens of thousands of people are still homeless, and at least three infants and one man have frozen to death, and others have died in fires as a result of being forced to rely unsafe heat sources.

Please give to support the urgent humanitarian relief work of the Middle East Children’s Alliance.

This report looks at 2013 compensation levels for Canada’s highest paid 100 CEOs and finds that executive pay in Canada has rebounded to its pre-recession glory days. The review finds that the CEOs pocketed an average $9.2 million—compared to the average Canadian income of $47,358. The last time CEO pay was this high was in 2007, when the average for the highest paid 100 CEOs was $10 million.

Do you support our 2015 election strategy?

how-can-we-win-A-350px.jpg

Dear Friend,

In my last letter to you, I predicted that Stephen Harper will stop at nothing to try to win the next election – and now it looks like most Canadians agree.

A startling new poll finds that nearly 70 per cent of Canadians are concerned that political parties may try to “manipulate the outcome of future elections through illegal activities.

In this issue: A (not so) Green Christmas Story | Déjà vu – again? Another omnibus budget bill rolls back federal environmental laws | Lost in translation on Burnaby Mountain | West Coast spurs dialogue about the 'big picture' on LNG development | The best of Environmental Law Alert for 2014

Dear PAOV,

What happens when a little girl asks Santa for healthy water, fish and wildlife for Christmas? Unfortunately, Santa can only do so much as Santa’s Legal Advisor, Elf Blackstone, explains in our darkly funny A (not so) Green Christmas Story.

Also this month we report on a successful First Nation’s legal challenge to the 2012 federal environmental law rollbacks, explain the serious threats to the environment under the latest federal omnibus bill, C-43, share lessons learned from Burnaby Mountain and Clayoquot Sound, look back on the top environmental law alerts of 2014 and highlight the first of many community dialogues that we are facilitating across northern BC in regions affected by multiple LNG proposals.

And finally, season’s greetings from all of us at West Coast!

A (not so) Green Christmas Story

With the holiday season fast approaching, Santa’s elves have been hard at work. But not everyone in the North Pole has spent the fall building toys for boys and girls.

  • Click here to watch this video of Santa’s Legal Advisor Elf Blackstone explaining how rollbacks to federal environmental laws mean fish, clean water and a healthy atmosphere won’t appear in anyone’s stocking this year.

How About A Referendum on Site C ...

Dec. 26, 2014

We Deserve A Referendum on Site C

B.C. must vote on Christy Clark's decision to flood the Site C reservoir.
Do we want to flood the land? Do we need the power?
Do we want to spend Billions of dollars?
Will Ms. Clark let the people of BC speak? Or is it 'Her' decision?

Let's vote. Yes or No on the Site C Dam. The People of British Columbia deserve to be heard. Why do we have no voice?

Site C goes to the heart of what we want for the future of our province. This is not Ms. Clark's decision to make, it is OUR decision.

The referendum should follow an information campaign of appropriate length. Those opposed to Site C must get sufficient money to present their sides of the story. It is suggested that a Public Inquiry / Royal Commission could provide information about how and why this Site C decision was reached. This Inquiry could begin almost immediately.

If you support a Referendum on Site C, please get back to us. Also, contact your politicians - push the media - and tell friends and family. I've contacted my MLA in Victoria, so we'll see what the NDP thinks.

If you'd like a democratic voice in this important issue, it's up to you.

The Peace Valley Landowner Assn. is one group challenging Ms. Clark's decision in court. See the links below, including a fundraising link.

Are Canadas Corporate Media Lying to us about ISIS?

The Bridge News Service: Independent Media from Canada

Are Canada's Media Lying About ISIS?
Are They trying to involve us in a WAR?

WHY?

(January 2, 2015) Canada's media is full of stories about ISIS. ISIS is behind the murder of two soldiers in eastern Canada - and gunfire in our Parliament Buildings. ISIS is linked to a hostage taking and killings in a restaurant in Australia. We are shown ISIS Beheadings and ISIS Executions. ISIS is taking over the Middle East. And Canada is fighting ISIS right now - 'because they must be stopped'.

BUT ... if you google: 'ISIS funded by US' you will see some very serious people saying ISIS is funded by, run by, and controlled by the United States and its allies. These stories seem to come from good sources. But our Media won't tell us the 'US funding ISIS' story. Can we Canadians ask why our Corporate Owned Media will not report this story.

And remember, the secret story is that the US funds and runs ISIS. Doesn't that seem important? Shouldn't Canadians be told that the people who run the United States may be running ISIS too? Why won't Canada's Media report this vitally important story?

And even worse, it almost seems like our Media is trying to get us into a war - with their messages of 'fear' and 'threats against us'. In fact, we are at war with ISIS; Canadian soldiers and aircraft are involved in a shooting war with ISIS right now. And who knows what ISIS may do next in Canada. But if ISIS was created by the people who run the United States, then 'who' is really attacking us ... and WHY?

When History Knocks

Sam Gindin

To raise the environmental crisis in Canada is to simultaneously highlight the notorious Alberta Tar Sands, the fastest growing polluter in Canada. But the Tar Sands are more than an environmental issue. This crisis-in-motion is inseparable from other fundamental issues at the core of Canadian society: indigenous land claims, Canada's integration to the American empire and its oil-hungry military leviathan, a focus on resource extraction as a core of Canada's economic development and a set of contested values about ‘the good life.’ Naomi Klein's new book, This Changes Everything, incorporates the contradictions exposed by the Tar Sands and extends such contradictions far beyond Canada and far beyond the Tar Sands, identifying them with the larger contradiction between the environment and...
