CSIS briefings on Northern Gateway protests prompts further concerns about C-51
News reports are heightening concerns about how C-51, the Harper government's so-called "anti-terrorism" legislation, could be used against people protesting against its extreme resource extraction agenda of tar sands expansion and pipelines.

On her birthday remembering Lucy Gonzales Parson who advocated nonviolent direct action a year before Gandhi advocated the tactic
Lucy Gonzales started life in Texas, was of Mexican American, African American, and Native American descent and born into slavery.
Lucy Gonzales Parsons, 1853–1942, was a labor organizer and orator.
On March 7, 1942, fire engulfed the simple home of 89-year-old Lucy Gonzales Parsons on Chicago’s North Troy Street, and ended a life dedicated to liberating working women and men of the world from capitalism and racial oppression. Friends,
I've sent you a lot of emails this past month about applying to the National Energy Board's review of Energy East and this is the last one: today is the last day to apply to be an intervenor in the Energy East review.
We've already spooked the NEB, forcing them to extend the application period by another week. So far over 2/3rds of all applications sent in demand to speak about climate change.
I'm asking for your help in one last push. Here are the steps to apply -- it takes 10-15 minutes at most:
- Click here and open this link for the NEB’s review page.
- Follow this step-by-step guide to apply to the NEB.
- Once you've finished, click here and register your application.
Tonight the extended application period will close, and with your help we can drive our point home: without considering climate change, the NEB review is incomplete and...

Hi friends,
The Guardian, one of the world’s most respected and influential newspapers, is joining the fight to keep fossil fuels in the ground. Earlier today, they launched a bold new partnership with 350.org and have signed on to the fossil fuel divestment campaign in a big way:

Both are heavily invested in the industry wreaking havoc on our climate, a fact that’s at odds with their missions to create a better world.
Call on the Gates Foundation & the Wellcome Trust to divest from fossil...

Starting this week, if you live on the Lower Mainland you will receive an invitation to vote in the referendum on the future of the region’s transportation.
Some people want to vote NO.
Maybe they never lived in a city that failed to work out its transportation problems, as I have. Try London, England, in the 1980s, when the roads were so jammed with traffic that I had to plan on getting stuck for half an hour every time I needed to drive somewhere.

Fundamental Rifts:
Power, Wealth and Inequality in the Arab World
Adam Hanieh
Over four years since mass uprisings ousted sclerotic regimes in Tunisia and Egypt, it can seem that the initial hopes represented by these movements lie in tatters. Libya, Syria, Yemen and Iraq remain mired in bloody armed conflicts that have led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and displaced millions more within and across borders. In the pivotal case of Egypt, military rule has returned through the violent crushing of protests, the arrests of an estimated 40,000 people and the rebuilding of the repressive structures of the [Hosni] Mubarak era. Elsewhere, autocratic governments look more secure in their rule today than they have for many years.
In assessing the current moment,...
