“HOME RUN!” was how an elated Jerry Dias, President of Unifor, summarized the mid-September outcome of the negotiations with Ford Motor Company, covering 6300 workers in Oakville and Windsor. Ford set the pattern in the closely watched and often trend-influencing negotiations at the ‘Detroit Three’ (formerly the ‘Big Three’ but the market penetration of Japan-based companies had gradually eroded that title). Home runs were soon also enthusiastically declared at Chrysler, covering 8,800 workers in Windsor, Brampton and Etobicoke and at GM, covering 1,700 workers in Oshawa, St Catharines and Woodstock.

Canada's first net zero emissions act was just tabled. It's not great. r1

Friends,

Earlier this morning, Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson tabled new proposed climate legislation for Canada. The “Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act” is meant to finally put Canada on track to meet the climate crisis.

But, like so many of this government’s climate promises, there is a massive gap between their words and the actions they’re ready to take. The earliest milestone set in this bill is for 2030 which leaves us without a plan to cut emissions over the critical next decade. It leaves too much room for the fossil fuel industry to get away with expanding. And, it doesn’t include any clear promises for how Canada’s climate accountability lines up with respect for Indigenous rights and the need to create millions of decent, green jobs.

We can change that by demanding ambition and calling on our leaders in Ottawa to bring this bill in line with the pillars of a made-in-Canada Green New Deal.

On the campaign trail during the recent B.C. election, the NDP committed to implement a series of independent recommendations on old growth forests – and then they won a majority government. To keep this promise, the new government must immediately ban the logging of at-risk old growth forests once taking office.

But while the B.C. NDP was first directed to put at-risk old growth forests off limits to logging in April, they are still procrastinating. And election promises mean nothing without a detailed plan to make them a reality. These irreplaceable forests are still on the chopping block, and if Premier John Horgan doesn’t act now, we could lose them forever.

Public pressure from across Canada is what first pushed Premier Horgan to make this election promise on old growth, but now pressure is needed again to force him to follow through.

Condemning the Ontario Government’s Adoption of the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism

We, the signing organizations, condemn in the strongest possible terms the Ontario government’s adoption of the misleading International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism.

Bill 168, the Combating Antisemitism Act, was scheduled to go through public consultations and receive public submissions by October 30. Instead, on October 26, the Ford government circumvented the democratic process by adopting the IHRA definition through issuing an Order-In-Council, an executive action used to supplant democratic action. The consultations were therefore cancelled as a result.

Furthermore, there have been mixed messages from officials in regards to whether the IHRA’s “illustrative examples,” which conflate criticism of Israel with antisemitism, are included. In fact, the provincial government has failed to clearly affirm Ontarians’ freedom to express solidarity for Palestinian human rights. The ambiguity makes way for supporters of the Israeli government to weaponize the IHRA definition to clamp down on speech about Israeli human rights violations.

There are real concerns that we will see — as we have seen already — many widespread cases of institutions denying individuals jobs or appointments, denying organizations funding and access to resources, editors rejecting articles, etc, because of the chilling effect that this misleading definition of antisemitism instills.Cntnue reading

BREAKING: reports have surfaced that the State Bank of India (SBI) is on the verge of handing over $1 billion to the Adani Group to help it build one of the largest coal mines in the world. If it does, it could sign the death warrant of the nearby Great Barrier Reef.

For years, SumOfUs members have stood with the Wangan and Jagalingou Traditional Owners and hundreds of thousands of others to stop this reef-wrecking mine.

And it’s worked: people power has cut off the mine from every source of finance in the world and so far Adani hasn’t dug up a single piece of coal.

But with the stroke of a pen the State Bank of India could undo it all and give Adani what it needs to finally start tearing open one of the largest untapped coal basins in the world.

We have a short window to prevent this loan, but we can do it. Just like we did when Adani turned to SBI for help six years ago.

It’s only been hours since we learned of this news but already people are mobilising from London to Mumbai, Sydney to New York to urge the State Bank of India to back away from this deal.

Back in 2014, political pressure and public outcry stopped SBI from loaning Adani the funds it needed to build its mega coal mine.

Since then, the climate emergency has only become greater with more people concerned about the impacts of climate change, the rights of Indigenous peoples, and the collapse of wildlife populations. It’s clear that what made the project risky then is only worse now. We need to show SBI that the protest against its investment is going to be even greater now that it was before.

We’re in a race against time, A. A race to protect our planet from runaway climate change. A race to stop mining companies tearing up Indigenous lands.

And at this moment, a race to stop a state-owned bank from bailing out a coal mine that will cause untold harm.

Corporations connect us all through the food we consume, to rainforest destruction and human rights violations. But politicians can break the chain.

Precious forests are burned to the ground to make way for soy used in animal feed, or palm oil in countless consumer products. That’s how corporations can connect us all to deforestation.

But the European Commission is looking for ideas right now to tackle the problem -- to stop EU consumption destroying our planet.

It's a golden opportunity, and not only for Europeans: A strong EU law to keep products linked to environmental destruction and human rights abuses out of the EU could have a massive impact around the world.

Demand the European Commission protects our forests NOW

Forests are essential. From producing the oxygen we breathe to purifying our water, and providing shelter to millions of plants, animals and people. Forests do it all for us. Moreover, healthy forests protect us from diseases and viruses, and they are critical for absorbing carbon emissions from the atmosphere which is the key to reversing climate chaos.

As consumers, shareholders, and workers, we want to be sure the products we buy contain sustainably produced ingredients - we want to keep our plates and cupboards deforestation-free. But corporations pay armies of lobbyists to subdue Brussels, and fight anything that looks like a threat to their business interests.

As a major consumer market, trading bloc and financial player, the EU has a unique power and the duty to tackle its own consumption and set the rules straight on what products should be allowed on its market. The EU should also lead complementary efforts at global, national and local levels, including securing the rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.

We are asking the European Commission for a strong law that stops products linked to deforestation from entering the EU market by the end of 2021. This law is now within reach, but we need your support to make it happen. Let the European Commission know you care about our planet and demand a change now!

This is big: the Federal Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson just announced plans to table a net zero emissions bill in Parliament tomorrow.1 That means that this will be the first major piece of climate legislation that the Trudeau government will bring forward since getting re-elected last year.

I'm reaching out to you first because we're preparing for a big fight ahead to strengthen the policy Trudeau's government is putting on the table and hold them accountable to building back better.
