Jason Kenneys anti-Alberta report

Spoiler alert: they found nothing‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
Stand.earth

After two years and 3.5 million taxpayer dollars funneled into a pro-oil, conspiracy-peddling process, the public inquiry into anti-Alberta Energy Campaigns submitted its final report to the Alberta government last week. What wrongdoing or conspiracy did it uncover? Absolutely nothing.
wild fires CanadaImage credit to CTV news via THE CANADIAN PRESS/HO-Alberta Government

Launched by Alberta Premier Jason Kenney, this inquiry was nothing more than a thinly veiled tactic to intimidate environmental groups like Stand.earth. But even though we always knew its claims were baseless, defending ourselves against it has still been a distraction from the climate emergency we’re facing.

We have no intention of letting Kenney’s ridiculous conspiracy theories slow us down – but in order to correct the many mistruths in the report, we need lawful representation, and that means legal fees (grimace).

Bolsonaro's dream come true

Brazilian President Bolsonaro calls it his "dream" to crack open the Amazon. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Indigenous man rowing in a canoe in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil

A,

Far right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says it's his "dream" to crack open the Amazon.

And he's fast-tracking legislation to make his dream come true -- opening the rainforest to out-of-control mining and expelling Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands to make it happen.

These hideous bills could be voted on any day now -- we need an urgent, all-out push to stop him. That means polling to put pressure on key politicians, generating national and international media coverage, and backing the Indigenous organizations on the front lines to stop this dangerous legislation in its tracks.

And it means we're counting on you, A -- will you chip in today to save the Amazon and its people?

We have a plan to keep Ottawa on track

Iron & Earth r1

Paov --

There’s been a lot of action lately, so let’s quickly catch up.

  1. We released our poll with Abacus sharing the thoughts that fossil fuel workers have about a changing energy economy;
  2. Following this, the Federal government announced plans to consult with workers for a Just Transition Plan,

Now, we’re releasing our Prosperous Transition Plan! Our four-point plan outlines how government can reach net-zero targets by 2050 - and how fossil fuel workers are essential to creating a successful Just Transition.

We’ll keep this email short and sweet but wanted you to know we’re working diligently to ensure the thoughts you’ve shared with us about our changing industry are represented.

You can check out the full plan here and sign our petition of support here.

Most importantly, help us spread the word by sharing these materials widely with...

Signatures to End the U.S. Blockade Against Cuba Are Needed

Friends,
On behalf of our Victoria Friends of Cuba committee, we would like to remind those of you who may or may not be aware of a petition that started in May and will end at the end of September in response to the homicidal US blockade of Cuba.
The petition, which will be presented to the House of Commons by MP Niki Ashton, will ask the Canadian government to apply pressure on the United States to lift the world's longest-running economic, financial, and commercial siege against Cuba.
We strongly encourage everyone with their family and friends to sign it. It doesn't take much to accomplish this. Let us demonstrate our strong opposition to such a cruel blockade, which no peaceful country like Cuba should ever have to endure, especially at a time when the pandemic is wreaking havoc. Share it on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
Here is the link to do it with: https://petitions.ourcommons.ca/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-3456
Always in solidarity,Victoria Friends of Cuba

Last week, we hosted Victoria’s first Festival Afloat concert on Victoria’s Gorge Waterway, benefitting West Moberly First Nations’ legal challenge to Site C. It was a magical, water-borne night of drumming and music: together, we raised $8,716 for West Moberly!

ANSWER-Drum-Group

Don’t live in the city? No problem! You don’t have to live in Victoria to join in on the fun. This Thursday will be our second golden evening on the water, and the event’s ticket purchases and donations are being MATCHED by two generous donors.

This is your LAST CHANCE to have your donation to West Moberly First Nations legal challenge matched! Matching funds will end this Thursday, July 29th.

Double your Donation!

As Chief Roland Willson says, the Site C Dam is unsafe, unnecessary and unlawful. Site C would be the third hydroelectric dam on the Peace River, which would flood the Peace River Valley and leave no land for West Moberly’s constitutionally-protected Treaty rights to hunt, fish, and trap. Please, donate to West Moberly’s legal challenge to the Site C Dam now and double your impact.

Climate doublespeak

Drought. Heat domes. Wildfires and tornadoes.

At 1.5°C warmer than it was pre-industrial era, the planet is teetering on the edge of further severe and more frequent extreme weather events and the havoc on society that ensues.

And yet, as Chuka Ejeckam writes this week: Strategies like reducing one's own carbon footprint, "voting for the climate," or attempting to persuade profiteering firms with purchasing decisions have all proved largely insufficient -- despite our governments' and corporations' attempts to convince us they are working.

For that reason, Ejeckam argues we should not hold fast to strategies that are clearly failing us, but instead seek more effective ones.

The climate crisis is here, and like anything else, its impacts will be felt by the world's most marginalized populations.

"It cannot be the case that the poorest people, in greater numbers than ever before, pay for the crimes of the wealthy with their lives." writes Ejeckam.

As Matthew Behrens points out, that is precisely what is happening with energy development in Canada. He details the injustices of Canada's dams in a new series titled "Silence of the dams: Canada's faux-green genocide."

3 things you can do today to demand action on the climate emergency

It's the climate emergency day of action and we need your help to make an impact.

r1

Paov,

I'll keep this one short.

In the face of heat warnings out West, smoky skies in the Prairies, and thunderstorms out East, people in 40+ communities are gathering to demand emergency-level action on the climate crisis.

We're bringing the heat of the climate crisis to our Members of Parliament along with demands for action. We know that with an election around the corner, politicians are paying close attention. Dozens of MPs have pledged to attend their local actions, as have candidates contending in the election.

That's why today, we need all hands on deck. Here are 3 things you can do right now to help:

1. Call your MP to demand emergency-level climate action. Today, let's flood our MP's phone lines so they simply cannot ignore our demands. We've got an easy one-click tool and a script that you can use to make your call in 2 minutes. Click...

Tomorrow, join the national day of action on the climate emergency

In the face of yet another heatwave, let's demand action on the climate crisis.

r1

Paov,

The Metro Vancouver area, where I live, is experiencing extreme heat alerts once again along with many other parts of BC and Western Canada.

Last time this happened about a month ago, it was a disaster. Hundreds of people lost their lives from causes linked to the severe heatwave, and the crisis of out-of-control wildfires reached a new peak of destruction. It’s infuriating to think that we are facing repeated climate catastrophes this summer because of decades of fossil fuel greed and political inaction.

That’s why, tomorrow, on July 29th, with climate disasters at our doorsteps and a potential federal election around the corner, over 40 communities across the country will rise up to demand real action from our political leaders. Click here to find an action near you.

If you don’t see an event close to you, consider signing up to take the lead in your community.

Your...
