Dear Paov,
Yesterday, Minister of Natural Resources Seamus O’Regan announced that the federal government will begin to engage energy workers through consultations for Just Transition legislation, to hear worker input on transitioning to a net-zero energy sector.
The groundbreaking poll we released last week - detailing how fossil fuel workers feel about the transition - is encouraging. But time is of the essence - we need urgent and effective action now. Here’s our full statement:
"Fossil fuel industry workers have the knowledge and
expertise to build Canada’s net-zero future that will support our
families and communities - if they get the training they need. We’re
pleased to hear Minister O’Regan say that fossil fuel industry workers
will have a central role in the consultations for Just Transition
legislation. Now it’s time to put those words into action. We’ll be
watching to ensure fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers have a
seat at the...

Paov,
Today, Natural Resources Minister Seamus O'Regan announced that the federal government has begun a new consultative process to draft their Just Transition Plan.1
This is huge. And it's all thanks to the tens of thousands of people who spoke up and took action to demand a Just Transition Act. But, even though this was a welcome announcement, it's nowhere close to the scale of action we need in this moment.
Nearly 800 forest fires are now burning in Canada. Firefighters have been working around the clock, but hundreds of fires remain out of control. The smoke has now reached across the whole country, triggering air quality warnings from BC to Quebec.2 Canada is on fire, but our political leaders refuse to act.
That's why tomorrow, our team at 350 Canada is holding an Emergency Mass Call on the Climate Emergency to share our big plan for responding...

Register for "Our land, our nature" today.
You know, better than most, that tribal peoples are the best conservationists. Yet again and again innocent indigenous people have told Survival campaigners (including me) stories of land theft, rape, beatings and killings in the name of “conservation.” From the Congo Basin to India, from Guatemala to Kenya, millions of people have lost their lands and livelihoods to make way for national parks, “green energy” projects, and other false solutions to biodiversity loss and climate change.
For years, we’ve been wanting to bring all their voices together and give them a platform to speak to decision makers, journalists and people like you. To tell you their truth: that we’re destroying the best guardians of our natural world in the name of nature conservation!
So here it is:
“Our land, our nature” will be the world’s first major international congress to decolonize conservation. It will bring together more than 30 activists, experts and scientists (indigenous and non-indigenous) from around 18 countries. Taking place on September 2-3, immediately before the World Conservation Congress, in Marseille, France, it will offer a counter-narrative to this “official” congress.

We can’t wait any longer on the climate crisis
It doesn’t take a scientist with a degree in climatology to see that something is deeply, deeply wrong with our planet.
In the last six weeks, record heat on the West Coast killed hundreds of people, [1] cooked more than a billion sea creatures to death, [2] and literally melted critical infrastructure. [3] The heat led to fires so massive that the smoke is spawning its own lightning storms that belch flaming embers (yes it sounds like a scene from an overwrought movie but this actually happened). [4]
Oh, and did I mention that the ocean was on fire? [5]

Hear from biologist Diana Chan & Firelight Group's Justin Page
Last night, we gathered around the digital campfire to hear stories about how members of Heiltsuk Nation are healing their lands and waters in the wake of the Nathan E. Stewart disaster.
175 people registered, with attendees hailing from Australia, Newfoundland/Labrador, Saskatchewan and Treaty 6 territory. We listened to biologist and Heiltsuk natural resources manager Diana Chan explain the process in which elders and knowledge keepers are joining forces with biologists and researchers to assess the health of the territory four years after the fateful wreck of an articulated tug barge in the abundant clam gardens of Gale Pass.
While Heiltsuk continue to be unable to harvest from the area, we learned from Justin Page of Firelight Group — a 100% Indigenous owned environmental consultancy — that the approach Heiltsuk are taking to conduct their EIA is setting a precedent for how other Nations will be stepping up to determine the course of industrial activity in their territories. By demanding a higher standard, Heiltsuk are working to restore ecosystem health in a wholistic, respectful way rather than, as has been typical of colonial EIAs, simply ensuring that 'resources' are in good enough shape for continued human exploitation.
With a passionate welcome given in fluent Heiltsuk language from Ǧvu̓í, and photos from the fieldwork now underway and layered analysis, the webinar offered a glimpse into the level of care and stewardship that are an expression of Heiltsuk law, known as Gvi’las.

New scorecard fails banks for their ties to oil & gas companies
We’re about to witness the dieback of the largest rainforest in the planet – unless we act with urgency and in solidarity with Indigenous communities who’ve been on the frontlines for decades.
I sent you an email a few days ago about Stand.earth and Amazon Watch’s new scorecard report – in which we found global banks like JP Morgan Chase and HSBC at “very high-risk” of funding the destruction of the Amazon.
There is no way to avoid climate disaster without immediately ending all further investment in new fossil fuel supply.
ADD YOUR NAMEIf banks are serious about protecting biodiversity, they cannot support extractive activities and companies that cause deforestation and the associated degradation.
Thank you for standing up for the Amazon,

A,
Last month, things got icy at the Ministry of Economy in Paris. We delivered more than 200,000 SumOfUs members’ signatures demanding that the French government drops its financial support to Total's devastating new gas megaproject in the Arctic.
Photo credit : Anna Kurth / Reporterre
TV and radio crews followed us and our partners from Les Amis de la Terre and 350. We installed a massive ice sculpture in front of the Ministry. It spelled €700,000,000 to represent the guarantee that the French State could grant Total for its destructive project.

Paov,
Earlier this week, my sons went for their annual camping trip to White Shell Provincial Park here in Manitoba. This year was unlike any other. They told me the scene looked apocalyptic. The air was thick with smoke. Water bomber planes were flying all through the day, scooping up water from the lake and trying desperately to extinguish the incessant wildfires raging across the boreal forests.
When they returned home to Winnipeg, where we all live, it wasn’t much of a relief. The smell of smoke and hazy skies have been a constant presence in the city these last few weeks. And, that’s just here in Manitoba. To our east and west, hundreds more fires are burning across Western Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC, where it’s only mid July and more than 1,000 wildfires have been recorded.
It’s undeniable. The climate emergency is at our doorstep.

The federal government just banned new thermal coal projects in Canada, but is continuing to mine and export it to the rest of the world. Sign the petition calling on the Canadian government to stop this hypocrisy and ban thermal coal exports and mining. ADD YOUR NAME
Last month, the federal government passed a policy effectively banning new thermal coal projects in Canada. This is a huge win, but it doesn’t solve the fact that Canada is still mining for and exporting this harmful fossil fuel across the globe.
This double standard is government hypocrisy at its finest – and it has serious implications for human health and the climate. Coal is responsible for more than 800,000 premature deaths a year, and is the source of nearly half of the world’s carbon emissions.
While the government is publicly celebrating its new coal policy, we need to ramp up the pressure to remind them that the job isn’t done until Canada stops mining and exporting thermal coal around the world.

“We call on all institutions that finance oil extraction and the oil trade in the Amazon to make bold decisions to stop bankrolling environmental pollution and climate change. Their investments must be based on sustainable economic alternatives for our countries and communities.”
- Marlon Vargas, President of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of the Ecuadorian Amazon (CONFENIAE)
Hi Michael,
The Amazon rainforest is at a tipping point. In May 2021, Amazon deforestation hit a record high – all while oil & gas extractions continue to accelerate deforestation in the region. But the oil & gas sector isn’t the only culprit driving the Amazon to irreversible destruction.
A new scorecard report by Stand.earth and Amazon Watch evaluated 14 global banks and found loopholes in their environmental and social risk (ESR) policies that are keeping them in business with companies involved in corruption, human rights violations and biodiversity loss. JP Morgan Chase, HSBC, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, and Citigroup all scored “F’s” and are at “very high-risk” of funding the destruction of the Amazon.
Fortunately, there is still time to avert the Amazon tipping point and it will...

Dear Paov,
We’re releasing the results from a groundbreaking poll conducted in partnership with Abacus Data revealing that a majority of fossil fuel workers:
- Recognize the threat of climate change
- Believe Canada should pivot towards a net-zero economy by 2050
- Are interested in changing careers to the net-zero sector.
All the signs point to a transition, and now we know that workers want it too.
We need the Canadian government to
step up and support our fossil fuel industry workers by ensuring they
have a seat at the Just Transition table and by investing in a
National Upskilling Initiative that will enable fossil fuel industry
and Indigenous workers to pivot their careers to the net-zero
economy.
Here’s where you come in.
We need you to check out...

This Thursday at 3 pm ET we are holding a webinar focused on an Indigenous community in Guatemala who are seeking their land back after being displaced by a military base.
Echoing the recent news in Canada, the remains of 90 Indigenous children who were disappeared in the 1980s were later found in unmarked, mass graves on that base.
Every July since 2008, the community has mobilized on the anniversary of their displacement to demand their land back.
Last month, while preparing for a mobilization with this demand, 21 members of the community were arrested and put in jail.
With a court date scheduled for Friday, and the anniversary of the community’s displacement later this month, this webinar on Thursday will provide a timely opportunity to hear about this struggle.
And given the Government of Canada’s ongoing support for the military base, the webinar will generate ideas on what those of us in this country can do to in solidarity to support the community’s demands.

Fairy Creek: Midnight raids and police aggression stoke tensions

ocked into a PVC tube cemented into the ground on a logging road for hours on end, Sage Jackson, 23, found solace in the giants of the forest nearby. The night of June 17 was cold, and sleep was evasive.
Then at midnight, bright white lights flashed in the darkness. Jackson could hear their boots, as an RCMP tactical team approached to raid the blockade camp in the Fairy Creek forest on southern Vancouver Island. Now wasn’t the time to flounder.
“They tried to antagonize us,” Jackson told Ricochet during a telephone interview.
Ricochet profiled Jackson, who is Nuu-chah-nulth/Heiltsuk and Nuučaańuł?ath/Haílzaqv, in mid-June, describing her efforts to establish an Indigenous healing space at one of the camps.
“An officer was kicking rocks next to my face when he was getting someone else out. I asked him why he was doing this to me. He said to ensure my safety.”
The old-growth forest in B.C.’s Fairy Creek area has garnered international attention as thousands of activists have gathered there to try and save it from logging. The RCMP have arrested over 300 people since May as they enforce an injunction obtained in April by logging company Teal-Jones to remove the forest defenders.
Jackson said she has an inherent responsibility to protect Indigenous territories from the impacts of continued colonial violence. That includes putting her body on the line, because it’s linked to the survival of the land.
“They stole our axe and our other things. Even some of our food and water. It’s inhumane,” she said during her stay at the Eden camp, where her arm was cemented into the ground.
She was frightened while the RCMP rummaged through the camp, and tried to call out to them.
But they ignored her.
