In less than 150 years, 97.3% of British Columbia's old growth forests have been logged. These ancient trees and their ecosystems have been lost forever. Fairy Creek (Ada'itsx), one of BC's last untouched old growth watersheds, lies on Southern Vancouver Island on the unceded territories of the Pacheedaht, Ditidaht and the Huu-ay-aht Nations. Despite Premier John Horgan's 2020 election promise to protect the remaining 2.7% of old growth forest, logging of Fairy Creek continues unabated. In August 2020, forest and land defenders began setting up blockades to prevent the destruction of this beautiful and fragile ecosystem. One year later, after mass civil action, over 500 arrests and intense public pressure, the conflict continues. This comprehensive and compelling documentary film sheds light on the issues around the...

An important update on our coverage of the crisis in Afghanistan

At every stage, we’ve exposed the bloodshed and incompetence of this war: the killing of civilians by drones and death squads, the dubious alliances with local warlords, and the mercenary profiteering by private “security contractors” like Erik Prince.

As the world looks on with horror at the events unfolding in Afghanistan, you might think that this would be a moment to reassess the failures of leadership that led to 20 years of senseless war.

But turn on cable news and you’ll instead hear a parade of ex-military and Bush administration officials — many with undisclosed ties to defense contractors — castigating President Joe Biden for a crisis of their own making.

As an Intercept reader, you know better. At every stage, we’ve exposed the bloodshed and incompetence of this war: the killing of civilians by drones and death squads, the dubious alliances...

We've got a problem

On September 8th, we're holding a massive day of action for the climate. r1

Paov,

We have a problem.

On Sunday, when Justin Trudeau officially kicked off the election campaign, we were in the middle of one of the worst wildfire days in Western Canada, amidst one of the worst wildfire seasons on record.

During his press conference, not a single reporter asked him a question about the climate emergency. It’s hard to believe that with the climate crisis literally at our doorstep, the media and politicians are still failing to address climate in this election.

This is unacceptable. That’s why, on Wednesday September 8th, right before the federal leaders’ debates, people from coast to coast to coast are rising up to demand action on the climate emergency. Check out the map to find an action in your community -- or sign up to host one.

September 8th is the same day as the French Federal Leaders’ debate, one day before the English debate, and two days before early voting kicks off. That’s why it's so critical for as many people as possible to join the "Canada’s still on Fire" mass day of action. This will be even bigger...

Everyone is talking about the climate emergency, so why aren't we being heard?

Today, I’m keenly aware of the climate insecurity we are facing as we are about to enter an unnecessary federal election at a time when our political leaders’ focus should be on megaphone-on-yellow-background-picture-id1303039306-2.jpg As I write this I’m thinking about the state of fires in B.C. and the smoke forecast that has hit Metro Vancouver. I’m thinking of our editor’s home, that was just minutes away from being hit by a tornado in Ontario not long ago, while others in Toronto have been breathing in some of the worst air quality in the world this summer because of the fires in northern Ontario.

Today, I’m keenly aware of the climate insecurity we are facing as we are about to enter an unnecessary federal election at a time when our political leaders' focus should be on building a green economy post-pandemic, responding in an authentic way to promises of reconciliation, addressing systemic racism and inequality, and building a more just Canada.

Tilbury LNG expansion

We have to act fast to stop this new LNG project in Metro Vancouver ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌‌

The Fraser River is the longest river in British Columbia, carrying spring water all the way from the Rockies to the Strait of Georgia in Vancouver. It is one of the most important rivers in the world for wild salmon and feeds into the home waters of Southern Resident Killer Whales.

It’s also where FortisBC is currently trying to expand its Tilbury LNG terminal.

Most B.C. residents haven’t even heard about this project, let alone its potentially devastating impacts on the climate and on endangered species.

Fortunately, it’s not too late to make your opposition known and help stop the project in its tracks. The first step in expanding Tilbury is building a jetty for transporting the LNG – and the BC Environmental Assessment Office (BC EAO) is currently accepting public comments that will determine if the project will live or die.

Click here to submit a public comment raising your concerns using our online fax tool (yes, a fax machine in 2021) and tell the BC EAO to reject the Tilbury expansion project.

The Prosperous Transition Plan, By And For Fossil Fuel Workers

Iron & Earth r1

Hi Paov,

We have had great responses and feedback from workers who want to see themselves and other workers supported through the transition to net-zero.

Some of the things we are hearing from fossil fuel workers include:

From a former oil and gas worker, in Newfoundland and Labrador: “It’s tough here right now. People are trying to save money, to put away what they can. A lot of people are out of work here, so the cost of retraining is a worry. People need to be retrained to transition but they may not be able to afford it on their own.”

From a worker in Medicine Hat: “I’ve already done four years of technical training and I have 15 years doing electrical work already. I want to work in the net-zero economy, but the biggest thing is now I have to go back and do another year or two of training on...

I just watched a video of dozens of desperate people clinging to the outside of a massive US airplane while it took off, only for some to fall to their death on the rooftops below. All to escape the Taliban.

But I know we have to do something to help.

Experts in the region say that a few charities are actually getting desperate families money, safe transport and legal help with asylum claims. But they're not the big names everyone knows and lots of NGOs are too scared to support them.

Our community is different. Thousands of donations right now from us could go directly to the on-the-ground groups funnelling real assistance in the middle of this tragedy -- and we don't have to wait for paperwork or approvals to do it. If we all chip in now -- we could save lives:

The secret donors behind the effort to overturn the 2020 election

New documents obtained by The Intercept reveal the large corporations and wealthy individuals pushing conspiracy theory-fueled efforts to reinstall Donald Trump as president.

New tax documents obtained by The Intercept reveal that secret donations from a handful of large corporations and wealthy individuals helped push conspiracy theory-fueled efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and reinstall Donald Trump as president.

The donations went to a shadowy right-wing group, the Bradley Impact Fund, which together with a larger, linked foundation has distributed money to organizations pushing conspiracy theories about election fraud, denying the results of the 2020 election, and crafting legal efforts to overturn the presidential vote.

Perhaps the most terrifying part of these revelations is that these dark-money contributions are perfectly legal and notoriously difficult to track. This information was only made public thanks to our newsroom’s hard-hitting investigative...

Bees: Bayer is NOT happy

Banned neonics are still being doused all over Europe.

Beekeepers are ready to sue governments who are letting this happen -- but they urgently need to pay the legal fees.

Can you chip in to keep bee-killers banned?

A,

Bayer is fuming: the EU’s top court has ruled to uphold a ban on bee-killing pesticides.

So Bayer and its pesticide cronies are playing rough -- pressuring national governments to slip toxic neonics through an “emergency” loophole in the law.

Make no mistake -- this is a tactic pesticide companies will repeat over and over until it destroys this bee-saving ban.

That’s why a small group of beekeepers is preparing to sue against these fake “emergencies” -- and force governments to properly enforce the ban. But this won’t be just one lawsuit -- this could take years...

The election has been called, here's what comes next

Help us transform Canada’s climate politics in this snap election.

r1

Paov,

It’s finally official. Justin Trudeau has called a federal election and voters will head to the ballot box on September 20th to elect a new government.

This will be the first election to take place under blood red, smoke-covered skies with dozens of communities on evacuation alert due to climate-driven wildfires. And, it's kicking off just one week after the IPCC released another sobering report that was described as a “code red for humanity” to up our climate ambition.

This will be an election in the middle of a climate emergency. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

That’s why I’m writing to let you know about our plan to raise the bar for climate leadership in this critical election. Here it is:

1. Make the climate emergency a top issue in the election. Building off the success of the "Canada On Fire Day of Action" on July 29th, we're going to...
