Next up in the House of Commons

Following this past Monday's federal election in Canada, the House of Commons is scheduled to resume sitting on October 18.
We will be working to identify the new and returning Members of Parliament we can work with to advance protection strategies for the human rights defenders we help accompany in Latin America.
Sadly this work is necessary given the recent report that 125 land and environmental defenders were killed in just Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras last year.
We will be sharing with MPs the recommendations from the recent International Observation Mission to Colombia, as well the measures recently proposed by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez relating to human rights in Colombia.
You can help amplify this agenda by retweeting our post on AOC’s proposals.

A,
Bees are dying off at record rates -- and a new study just revealed farmers are being sold pesticides that are killing twice as many bees as previously thought.
That's why we've joined beekeepers across Europe to collect one million signatures for a European Citizens' Initiative (ECI), which could force the EU to take urgent action to ban Bayer's toxic pesticides and save the bees.
But there's a problem -- thanks to COVID it’s been difficult to collect signatures in person, and the deadline is coming up at the end of this month.

Trudeau won't have a majority government like he was hoping for 5 weeks ago when he called the election.
His inaction on climate is a reason why -- polls showed that climate change is a top voter concern.
Call on all parties to unite on climate now.
A,
It’s another minority government for the Liberals.
In the coming days, the Liberals will be busy figuring out why they didn’t get the majority they planned for 5 weeks ago. Meanwhile, the parties holding the balance of power in the minority government will be figuring out how to push the Liberals' to get closer to their constituency's agenda.
But it's clear what all parties should focus on: climate action. Poll after poll show that Canadians rank climate change among their top concerns. And this summer’s deadly heatwave and wildfires gave us a daily reminder of our urgency to act.
This week, all the political parties will plan for...

Hi Friend,
Today has been a long time coming. We will be in court today, face to face with the RCMP Commissioner, to hold the RCMP accountable for their extreme delay in responding to our complaint. All our work thus far is possible because of your support.
Will you make a donation today to support our lawsuit?
I want to make sure you have a chance to read yesterday’s email, sent by Sambriddhi.
Thank you for being on our side.

Let's talk about the election

Paov,
I’m not quite sure how to feel this morning. I feel like we’ve all been on a month-long rollercoaster ride together and it’s finally starting to slow down -- but it’s not over yet.
Last night, Canada elected another Liberal minority government. In many ways, it seems like we’re right back where we started at the beginning of the election -- and that’s frustrating.
But, in many ways, the political landscape of this country has been permanently transformed. Let me explain.
First, it’s clear that this is the first election where the climate emergency was the top issue for voters across the country -- and politicians took notice with parties and candidates competing to stand out as climate champions. This is in no small part thanks to tens of thousands of people just like you who took action to demand that politicians start acting like we’re in a climate emergency. Thank you.
We’re also seeing how powerful it is when climate voters unite behind...

No matter what happens tonight

Friends,
I’m on pins and needles. The final polls and projections from this election couldn’t be closer, including in many of the ridings where our climate champions have a real shot at winning.
But no matter what happens tonight, I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved over the last few weeks. So, before we leap into what’s next, I wanted to take a moment to thank you so much for everything we’ve already achieved together.
When the election was called five weeks ago, hundreds of you joined us for a mass call to kick off the Climate Emergency Voting Alliance, letting politicians know that all across this country people are ready to rally behind real climate champions.
You made sure climate was front and center in this election.
Weeks before the election was even called, more than 40 communities across the country mobilized outside MP offices in response to this summer’s unprecedented heat and fires. The first Canada On Fire Day of Action made it clear to politicians from coast to coast that they can’t...
Were pulling back the curtain on Joe Manchins fossil fuel businesses

Last week, Sen. Joe Manchin said he wants the Democrats’ $3.5 trillion infrastructure package cut by nearly two-thirds, inevitably gutting provisions that would directly benefit Manchin’s home state of West Virginia.
Then, at a private Senate Democratic caucus luncheon, he reiterated his position that the entire process should be delayed, which could torpedo both infrastructure bills, including the bipartisan $1 trillion package that Manchin personally negotiated.
So why would Joe Manchin — a Democrat — want to tank his own party’s top legislative priority?
In June, The Intercept uncovered a bombshell recording of Manchin strategizing about the infrastructure bill not with constituents but with Wall Street-funded lobbyists for the dark-money group No Labels.
Then, mere weeks ago, No Labels offered to raise $200,000 for two conservative House Democrats if...

Tomorrow’s hearing has been a long time coming. Over seven years ago, we filed a complaint against the RCMP for illegal surveillance of climate organizations and Indigenous land defenders.
We encountered delay after delay in the complaint process. This is unacceptable. This ineffective complaint process has proven that the RCMP is not willing to be held accountable for their wrongdoing.
Enough is enough. Communities across these lands who have been demanding an end to the abuses of police power deserve better.
On September 21 and 22, we’ll be in the Federal Court, face to face with the RCMP.
We need your support. Court processes are long. They require resources and creative tactics. You can...
