A secret weapon to stop climate change

A,
Lobsang Yangtso escaped from Tibet by climbing over the Himalayas when she was just 9 years old.
Today, she's an environment and climate crisis expert with a Ph.D. And she's terrified about what is happening in her Tibetan homeland, where ice is melting 3x faster than anywhere else on the planet. As home to a glacier that provides water for 1 in every 5 people on Earth...we should all be terrified.
Lobsang wants to sound the alarm at the critical COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, just weeks away. But the high cost of attending means she and other front-line activists and experts are being shut out completely -- leaving the fossil fuel lobby to control the narrative and stop real action.
We can change that -- if thousands of us chip in, our community can send Lobsang to meet our leaders...and...

Right-wing health care providers are making millions selling unproven remedies for Covid-19

A trove of hacked documents has revealed that a network of right-wing health care providers has made millions of dollars selling unproven treatments for Covid-19 like hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin.
The data, shared with The Intercept by an anonymous hacker, includes hundreds of thousands of records and shows how a network of sites including a pro-Trump group called America’s Frontline Doctors is both fueling and profiting from misinformation about Covid-19.
The greed is stunning, and what we’ve uncovered so far may well be just the tip of the iceberg. We’re continuing to analyze this leak and dig for further evidence of pandemic profiteering, but as a nonprofit news outlet we rely on the financial support of our readers to...

Victory for Fairy Creek

Let’s use this momentum to stop old growth logging across B.C.
On Tuesday, we all celebrated a huge victory: Justice Thompson denied Teal Jones’ application to extend the injunction against forest defenders at Ada’itsx (Fairy Creek)! The pressure is on for the B.C. government to finally uphold its promise to protect at-risk old growth across the province.
In June, the B.C. NDP formalized a new technical panel on old growth with leading scientists at the table to map out what areas should be deferred from logging across the entirety of B.C. The government now has all the information they need to implement deferrals, and yet they still didn’t meet their self-imposed end-of-summer deadline to do so.
Politicians are back in session at the Legislature next week, and the ball is in our court. We need to build on the momentum from this recent ruling to demand that MLAs across the province continue advocating internally for the government to implement deferrals immediately.

Ship waste dumping

Canada's ship waste standards are 18x worse than what Alaska allows.
With a new government and the upcoming cruise season, now is the time to strengthen regulations against ship waste dumping. Sign the petition to let the Canadian government know protecting the ocean and the climate should be a legislative priority. SIGN THE PETITION
As we set sail with a new government, one thing was made very clear throughout these past weeks: This was a climate election – but will this be a climate administration?
Newly elected members of parliament will soon be given their cabinet assignments as well as their departments’ priorities – and for Transport Canada, it’s critical that ocean protection is at the top of the list.
TAKE ACTIONAs regulations stand currently, what Canada considers to be “treated” ship waste is 18 times more polluted than what Alaska allows. Meanwhile, Washington State doesn’t let any sewage, treated or not, get dumped in the Salish Sea, though their jurisdiction only covers half of it.
UPDATE: Chubb dropped Trans Mountain!

This is a massive victory
PAOV – we did it!
In the midst of the Canadian federal election, Chubb confirmed earlier this month that it will no longer provide coverage for the Trans Mountain pipeline, becoming the sixteenth insurer to drop this toxic project.
I can’t overstate how big this is. Chubb is the world’s largest publicly traded property and casualty insurer, and its decision to cut ties with Trans Mountain is not only a major blow for the struggling pipeline – but also sends a strong signal to any future tar sands projects trying to get off the ground.
Thank you, for believing this was possible and for everything you’ve done to put pressure on Chubb over this past year. This massive win for the climate and for Indigenous rights would not have happened without the persistence and dedication of Stand.earth members like you, working in solidarity with Indigenous land defenders and our global network of allies.
But before I get ahead of myself, let’s rewind for a second.

B.C. judge won't extend Fairy Creek injunction because RCMP conduct sullies the reputation of the court

Mounties enforcing a court order continued to wear thin-blue line patches in defiance of their bosses' instructions
by Charlie Smith on September 29th, 2021 at 7:47 AM
B.C. Supreme Court Justice Douglas Thompson has refused to extend Teal Cedar Products Ltd.'s injunction in the Fairy Creek watershed on southwestern Vancouver Island.
That was because the "balance of convenience" for the forest company does not outweigh the public interest in protecting the court from "further depreciation of its reputation".
Thompson concluded that Teal Cedar Products had suffered "irreparable harm" from the protests, which is another test for extending the injunction.
But the judge noted that one of the considerations to be addressed was "the dangers of depreciation of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the Court".
This needed to be taken into account "when a dispute between citizens on one side and the government and...
Summary of Mr. Justice Thompsons Reasons for Judg

Notes compiled by Ben Isitt
1. Mr. Justice Thompson exercises his discretion in deciding against extending the injunction requested by Teal Cedar Products Ltd. (paras 2 and 89)
2. Thompson accepts Mr. Justice Verhoeven’s proposition that it is for the legislature and government, rather than the court, to decide on matters of public policy such as climate change – consistent with the doctrine of the separation of powers and “constitutional constraints on judicial powers.” Thompson therefore refuses to consider “the fact that the protesters are moral and ethical citizens endeavouring to ward off impending destruction of a rare and irreplaceable ecosystem in the context of an existential environmental and climatological crisis.” (paras 31 and 65)
3. Thompson cites favourably from Mr. Justice Wood’s dissenting reasons for judgement in Greenpeace Canada v. MacMillan Bloedel Ltd., 1994 BCCA 943, para 168, to the effect that the courts are “ill-suited” to legislate ad hoc criminal laws in response to protests under the guise of injunctions, and that the court’s jurisdiction to issue injunctions should be exercised “sparingly” and as a “last resort”:
“The inherent jurisdiction of the Supreme Court to punish for contempt of court is essential to the preservation of...

He's taking on Nestlé

A,
Didier Thouvenin is a farmer in Vittel, France -- home to one of Nestlé's massive water-guzzling projects.
Together with other whistleblowers, he exposed that Nestlé was illegally dumping huge amounts of plastic and chemical waste, forcing it to admit to creating NINE massive dumping sites.
But instead of cleaning up the mess and apologizing to local residents, Nestlé filed a legal complaint against Didier for trespassing! We know it won’t stop there -- there were 11 other activists with Didier that day and Nestlé is famous for doing everything they can to silence opposition to protect its profits.
Didier just told us he URGENTLY needs to secure a lawyer to fight back. If enough of us chip in, we can create a legal defense fund for Didier and other brave activists standing up to Nestlé... can you help?
