Dear Friend,

Every day, I hear back from our many supporters, like you, expressing how important this work is.

Your care and commitment to a world that guarantees civil liberties and human rights for all, drives our work. We hold governments and people in power to account by litigating important cases at the highest courts, we advocate for systemic solutions through law form, and we educate the public about their rights through public legal education and resources.

You and I both know that change doesn’t happen in a week, a month, or a year. But, just last week, we’ve stood face to face with the RCMP Commissioner to hold them accountable for their inexcusable delays in responding to our complaint.

This is only the beginning since the work of seeking justice never ends. Regardless, we are here to see it through.

Will you become a member to bring these meaningful changes one...

Let's correct the Premier

Premier John Horgan says there is no logging going on at Fairy Creek. Let's set the record straight. Fairy Creek Watershed Old-Growth deferral area and surrounding unprotected old growth. Approved cut blocks are marked in red. Last week, speaking to the Union of BC Municipalities AGM, Horgan said that “protesters need to acknowledge there is no logging going on there [Fairy Creek] and go back to their homes.”

There is definitely logging happening in Fairy Creek, and protesters are not going home. While it's true that the Fairy Creek Watershed is no longer at immediate threat, the blockades have never been about protecting one watershed. Our longest running blockade, River Camp (which was destroyed last month), was created to protect some of the highest value habitat remaining in the region in an area just outside of the Fairy Creek Watershed line known as “Granite Creek.“

Logging is happening there right now.

If John Horgan truly wants to end the conflict at Fairy Creek he needs to keep his promises, starting with the one he made in the beginning of summer, when he told us there would be more deferrals coming “later this summer.” It is now the end of September and his administration has made no effort to advance protection for our last remaining old growth forest.

Call him. Tag him in your stories. Come to camp.

COP26 starts next month!

COP26 starts next month! r1 Peace Brigades International-Canada Making Space for Peace

The United Nations COP26 climate summit will start on October 31 in Glasgow, Scotland.

We will be working with PBI frontline projects in Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, the environmental defenders we accompany there and allies to highlight that the Glasgow Pact must include mechanisms for the protection of defenders.

Since the Paris Agreement was reached at the COP21 summit in December 2015, at least 1,000 land and environmental rights defenders have been killed around the world. On average, that’s a staggering loss of four activists each week over a 5-year period.

You can help amplify our call to the Prime Minister to protect frontline climate defenders by retweeting this message to him.

Please also stay tuned for a webinar we are organizing on COP26 tentatively scheduled for Saturday November 6, which is also a global day of climate action.

Top 5 posts this week:

1- COP26 must address gender-based violence against Indigenous women land defenders

2- PBI-Honduras accompanies Arcoiris at LGBTQI+ rights march in San Pedro Sula

Let's make sure they get the Just Transition Act right

Add your voice to the chorus of people calling for a strong Just Transition Act. r1

Paov,

In the whirlwind of the election you may have missed that Natural Resources Canada is holding a public consultation right now on Justin Trudeau’s long promised Just Transition Act.

For millions of people across Canada, the climate crisis is at our doorsteps. A summer of extreme heat, record-breaking wildfires, and smoky skies from coast to coast to coast, made it clear that we need a plan to tackle the climate crisis and to get off of climate-wrecking fossil fuels fast.

The time is now for a just transition, and we need to make sure federal leaders get it right. That’s why we’re calling for a Just Transition Act that reflects these three principles: 1) Guarantees good, green, union jobs, 2) Puts people, workers, and communities first and 3) Listens to the science.

Join the consultation right now to help us ensure that these three principles are reflected in Trudeau's Just Transition legislation. Our one-click tool makes it easy to join in.

The only way to ensure that this legislation kickstarts a truly just transition, one that puts people and planet ahead of corporate profits, is...

A,

Didier Thouvenin is a farmer in Vittel, France -- home to one of Nestlé's massive water-guzzling projects.

Together with other whistleblowers, he exposed that Nestlé was illegally dumping huge amounts of plastic and chemical waste, forcing it to admit to creating NINE massive dumping sites.

But instead of cleaning up the mess and apologizing to local residents, Nestlé filed a legal complaint against Didier for trespassing! We know it won’t stop there -- there were 11 other activists with Didier that day and Nestlé is famous for doing everything they can to silence opposition to protect its profits.

Didier just told us he URGENTLY needs to secure a lawyer to fight back. If enough of us chip in, we can create a legal defense fund for Didier and other brave activists standing up to Nestlé... can you help?

Dear Friend,

Time and time again, you’ve seen governments not addressing the root causes of problems. Instead, they criminalize social issues, engage in racist policymaking, and over-police and under-protect communities.

That’s why you support the work we do. We’ve advocated for a radical transformation of policing, stood firmly in solidarity with Indigenous nations exercising their jurisdictions, and sued the government for illegal spying on Canadians. And most recently, last week, we took RCMP to court for their inexcusable delays in responding to complaints.

You know meaningful changes take time, and we are here to see it through. BCCLA has been one of the oldest and most steadfast defenders of civil liberties and human rights for all.

Will you join our community as a member to help us do this work for years to come?

A,

This week French oil and gas giant Total is getting set to sell a cunning plan to investors: to use 'sustainable' financing to fund its efforts to drill the Arctic.

It’s greenwashing on an epic scale. But we have a chance to disrupt Total’s plans.

Total is unveiling its full corporate strategy to investors like AXA and BNP Paribas starting today. Investors will then decide whether to buy into Total's 'sustainability bonds' over the coming weeks.

It’s just enough time to raise the alarm. You can spook investors by showing them that tens of thousands of people across the...

We took the RCMP to court – what you can do to support

Dear Friend,

In November 2020, we launched our lawsuit against the RCMP commissioner for the extreme delay in responding to our complaint against the RCMP for illegal surveillance of climate organizations and Indigenous land defenders..

On September 21st, we went to court, face to face with the RCMP, holding this powerful institution accountable for their inexcusable actions.

Our work doesn’t stop here. No matter the outcome of this case, we will fight hard to make sure that the rights and liberties of those who are most impacted by civil liberties and human rights violations are heard by courts and lawmakers.

The BCCLA pays particular attention to the needs of marginalized communities, and we will continue to step up to bring meaningful change for all. Will you become a member today to help us hold these big institutions accountable?

Introducing our Community Engagement team!

Iron & Earth r1

Paov,

Community is at the root of all of Iron & Earth initiatives and while these past couple of years have made it extremely difficult to build relationships in person, we continue to strive towards this goal by bringing in a couple of key people to our team who will help us build a foundation to grow our chapters across the country. It is with great pleasure that we introduce Ana Guerra Marin as our new National Chapter Director and Stephen Buhler as our new Community Engagement Officer!

Ana has spent the last 15 years helping communities achieve self-determination through social and environmental justice in Latin America and Canada. She is a geological engineer with a M.A. in social justice who aims to create transformative change by focusing on human rights while deconstructing structural issues as root causes of violence with a strong environmental component. She offers her knowledge and expertise to the organization as well as to...

What you need to know about Joe Manchins daughter

According to newly unsealed court documents, Heather Bresch, the former president and CEO of the drugmaker Mylan — and Sen. Joe Manchin’s daughter — colluded directly with the CEO of Pfizer to keep prices of Mylan’s EpiPens artificially high.

According to newly unsealed court documents acquired by The Intercept, Sen. Joe Manchin’s daughter, a former pharmaceutical CEO, collaborated directly with the CEO of Pfizer to keep EpiPen prices artificially high.

Heather Bresch — then the CEO of Mylan, which holds a patent for EpiPens — orchestrated a scheme in which Pfizer would divest from its EpiPen competitor, giving Mylan a virtual monopoly on the lifesaving medication. In just a few short years, the price for two EpiPens skyrocketed from $100 to $600.

As Manchin threatens to tank President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion infrastructure package, which would threaten pharmaceutical profits by allowing Medicare...

385 million people poisoned

Bayer, Cargill, and Syngenta are about to get unprecedented power to shape United Nations policies on food production.

Will you join the global movement to stop the UN from partnering with the world’s most dangerous pesticide corporations?

A,

There are an estimated 385 million cases of acute pesticide poisonings each year.

That means about 44% of farmers and agricultural workers around the world are poisoned annually. And those numbers could rise if we don’t stop Bayer’s latest power grab.

Right now, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is trying to create a formal partnership with CropLife International -- the mega lobbying group that represents Bayer, Cargill, Syngenta and over 300 other pesticide companies.

Allies tell us that an announcement of the deal can come as early as this month unless we stop this #ToxicAlliance.
