As Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner approaches reelection, the progressive movement that brought him to power four years ago is asking: What else can he do to reform the criminal justice system from within?
A former civil rights attorney who sued the police over 75 times, Krasner began serving in January 2018 with an ambitious mandate to fix some of the long-lasting inequities plaguing the city’s justice system.
As he seeks a second term, Krasner continues to face significant opposition from law enforcement groups as well as new questions from the people of Philadelphia. How will Krasner respond to concerns about the recent spike in gun violence and homicides in the city?
This Thursday, Krasner will join The...

Did you hear Trudeaus COP26 speech?

Paov,
Yesterday, at the opening of the the United Nations climate negotiations (COP 26) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau talked about the deadly heatwave that Canada experienced this summer, and about Lytton burning to the ground as he urged world leaders “do more and faster” to address the climate crisis.1 But actions at home matter far more than words in Glasgow, especially when under Trudeau’s watch, Canada has racked up the worst climate record in the G7.2
We simply can’t cut emissions fast enough unless we start winding down oil and gas production3. Trudeau admitted as much in his speech yesterday when he told the audience that “ensuring [emissions] never happen in the first place” is the best climate policy. To actually accomplish that, Canada needs a real plan to accelerate our energy transition, support affected workers and communities, and guarantee a good, green job to anyone who wants one.

Dear Friend,
In October, we announced that we are going back to court to fight against prolonged solitary confinement. Many of you stepped up and made a donation to support this lawsuit – thank you!
We couldn’t have done this work without you. After years of advocacy, in 2019 we had a historic win when the BC Court of Appeal ruled that the federal laws that permitted prolonged, indefinite solitary confinement were inhumane and unconstitutional.
But this inhumane practice never stopped. Wardens at federal prisons continue to isolate people in long-term solitary confinement by using lockdowns and “restrictive movement routines.”
We are resolute to end this torturous practice, and we are thankful to have supporters like you to be on our side.
We will continue to send updates to this important case – and we have an exciting announcement to make in the coming week. Please stay tuned.
Thank you...

Death blow for the Amazon?

A,
Far right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says it's his "dream" to crack open the Amazon.
And he's pushing legislation to make his dream come true -- opening the rainforest to out-of-control mining and expelling Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands to make it happen.
These hideous bills could be voted on any day now -- we need an urgent, all-out push to stop him. That means polling to put pressure on key politicians, generating national and international media coverage, and backing the Indigenous organizations on the front lines to stop this dangerous legislation in its tracks.
And it means we're counting on you, A -- will you chip in today to save the Amazon and its people?
If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately:

What’s happening in Congress right now is an abomination.
Behind closed doors, corporate lobbyists have teamed up with Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema to kill some of the most popular and progressive measures in President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan.
Our last best chance to slash greenhouse gas emissions and prevent climate catastrophe may already have been lost. Paid family leave and cheaper prescription drugs are also rumored to be on the chopping block while billionaires and large corporations are winning out.
We need more muckraking journalism to shine a spotlight on the influence peddling that’s holding back progress. But most newsrooms, already weakened by years of cost-cutting layoffs, are now suffering from a...

A,
How amazing is this -- scientists have discovered mushrooms that can devour plastic waste in a matter of weeks...plastic that would otherwise just be in the ocean forever.
Right now 91% of plastics we use can’t be recycled -- and every minute a truckload-worth is dumped in the ocean, suffocating sea life and spreading pollutants across shores.
But scientists say these mushrooms could eat up to half of the plastic waste being dumped in the ocean -- and they need your help to finish their groundbreaking research.
Scientist Dr Cullings is retiring from NASA this year to join the nonprofit Ocean Blue Project in their work to isolate and reproduce plastic-eaters for industrial use. They have projects planned in the US and New Zealand that need funding. If 5000 of us chip in, we can pay for the lab equipment they need to finish their research -- and help rid the planet of plastic waste....

Dear Friend,
We announced earlier this month that we are going back to court to continue our fight against long-term solitary confinement.
We are resolute in our commitment to ending this unjust and inhumane practice because we know that solitary confinement has devastating impacts on people in prison and their loved ones.
DONATEThroughout our fight, many survivors of solitary confinement bravely stepped forward to describe the cruel reality of this practice to the courts. They talked about the immense suffering they experienced – from BobbyLee Worm, who spent three and a half years in solitary, to Andre Blair, who spent 363 days imprisoned in a small, dirty cell. The survivors’ testimony gave many hope that this unjust practice would one day end.
But it hasn’t.

Are the Democrats screwed?
That’s the question many in Washington are asking as the stalemate in Congress grinds on. But beneath the endless “will they or won’t they?” speculation about Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema lies a deeper struggle between corporate lobbyists and progressive insurgents for the future of the party.
In the eyes of The Intercept’s D.C. Bureau Chief Ryan Grim, “The party’s past still has a death grip on the present.”
A year before the midterm elections — and the day after critical elections in Virginia, New Jersey, and Massachusetts — he’ll join in a live discussion with investigative reporter Lee Fang and Washington editor Nausicaa Renner.
Will you join us for this virtual live event on Wednesday, November 3 at 3 p.m....

Our reaction to Trudeau's new cabinet

Friends,
Trudeau just announced his new Cabinet and there are big implications for Canada’s climate emergency response. Former climate activist Steven Guilbeault will lead the Environment Ministry and outgoing Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson is heading to Natural Resources.1 Both politicians have been vocal about the stakes of the climate crisis and the need to move off fossil fuels but we know that, with the Liberal government, words often fall short of action. It’s up to us to make sure they deliver.
Beyond the Environment and Natural Resources moves, today’s cabinet shuffle was a good reminder that the scale of the climate crisis demands action from all areas of government. Seamus O’Regan is moving from Natural Resources to Labour but if the Trudeau government is serious about tackling the climate crisis, delivering green jobs and a just transition for fossil fuel workers will be a huge component of O’Regan’s new job. Likewise,...
