Baby orangutan eating a leaf

A,

It sounds like a fairy tale, but there’s a place on Earth where tigers, elephants, and orangutans coexist in the wild. And this week we can buy a huge piece of their forest home to help protect it...forever.

The Leuser ecosystem of Indonesia has been called one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. But poaching, infrastructure projects like hydroelectric dams, and mass deforestation fueled by palm oil plantations are threatening to destroy it.

That’s why our partner Rainforest Trust wants to purchase and protect a huge chunk of this forest...and give these critically endangered species a fighting chance to survive. Just months ago we were able to do this in Colombia, and protect a rare monkey species...let’s do it again!

If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has a donor offering a 4x match on your donation! They could secure the land quickly...

Indigenous Identity Fraud in the Academy by Winona Wheeler

Associate Professor, Department of Indigenous Studies College of Arts and Science
https://usaskfaculty.ca/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/Indigenous-Identity-Fraud-in-the-Academy.pdf

Indigenous identity fraud occurs when non-Indigenous people pose and represent themselves as Indigenous. This phenomenon is not new news to us. We have been dealing with it for a few centuries. From Archie Belaney (Grey Owl), to Dr. Andrea Smith, Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at UC Riverside1 , writer Joseph Boyden, filmmaker Michelle Latimer, and even more recent newsworthy instances, there have always been a few non-Indigenous people “playing Indian” in our midst. Each of these, and many others, were well published, highly regarded...

Song - The Day the Mountains Came Down - Video

On November 14th 2021 all major roads leading into Vancouver B.C. were shut down by multiple mudslide events. Thousands of people were stranded, 4 lost their lives. Many more lost their livelihoods. This event inspired me to write this song in one hour. I recorded it in one take.

Paov,

There is no denying that the climate emergency has reached our doorstep. This past summer, a deadly heat dome killed over 500 people in BC. Shortly after that, fires burned all across the west, covering the entire country in smoke. Then, this fall, climate-fuelled rain events brought record-breaking floods to both the west and east coasts. Right now, another atmospheric river is pummelling BC for the third time in a week.

The reality of the climate emergency is starting to weigh on so many of us. In the face of so much crisis, it can be hard to know what to do. But, action is the antidote to despair and every single one of us has the power to turn climate worriers into climate organizers.

This month, we look an important step forward in our fight to end solitary confinement in prisons. We filed a lawsuit to stop the wardens at federal prisons from unlawfully placing people in long-term solitary confinement.

The government claims that long-term solitary confinement has been banned. But wardens at federal prisons continue to isolate people in long-term solitary confinement by using lockdowns and “restrictive movement routines.”

Peoples’ rights are being violated, with devastating consequences for their physical and mental wellbeing. Solitary confinement is...

Need 1,800 people to give $5 before midnight

We don’t charge for subscriptions or run ads on our website. We depend on committed and generous people who step up to become members and make our journalism possible.

Every month, millions of people read or listen to The Intercept’s reporting — but fewer than 1 percent of them donate to make it possible.

To effectively confront the powerful and expose corruption, our stories need to be available to everyone, not hidden behind a paywall.

Because we don’t charge for subscriptions or run ads on our website, we depend on committed and generous people who step up to become members and make our journalism possible.

This has been a challenging year, and we’re counting on Giving Tuesday to make up a significant fundraising shortfall. And with just 6 hours left, we’re only $9,000 short of our $90,000 goal: In other words, we need...

Solitary confinement and prison conditions don’t happen in a vacuum. They are informed by intersecting civil liberties and human rights issues such as colonialism, systemic racism, criminalization, borders, classism, ableism and more.

Newsrooms are being pummeled by Silicon Valley algorithms

Right now, journalism is being pummeled by social media algorithms that reward superficial and polarizing ragebait over substantive investigative reporting — setting off a race to the bottom among outlets forced to compete for clicks.

If this year has proved anything, it’s that the crises we face go a lot deeper than Donald Trump.

Whether it’s a warming planet or a Congress gridlocked by moneyed interests, the challenges of our time need to be addressed at their roots. And that requires journalism that questions the official story to expose the corruption and greed that those in power don’t want revealed.

But right now, journalism is being pummeled by social media algorithms that reward superficial and polarizing ragebait over substantive investigative reporting — setting off a race to the bottom among outlets forced to compete for clicks.

Thanks to reader support, The Intercept’s reporters...

BC families losing access to services

PAOV — Petition starter Jen is demanding BC’s government stop all planned changes to the province’s autism therapy funding. The government plans to end all direct funding to families within the next four years, replacing the current individual funding model with a “hub” system that will interrupt or end access to personalized treatment for many families. If you think that the government should continue their current autism therapy funding model, sign the petition now.

The bipartisan consensus for global killing

As an Intercept reader, you know that we can’t afford to look away just because Democrats are back in power.

I’ve spent much of the last 25 years as a journalist covering the impact of American militarism, reporting from war zones in Iraq, the former Yugoslavia, and Nigeria.

I’ve seen firsthand the devastating impacts of U.S. militarism under Republican and Democratic presidents, from George W. Bush’s Iraq War fiasco to Barack Obama’s drone wars and Afghanistan surge.

In 2014, I helped co-found The Intercept because U.S. journalism was utterly failing to provide the accountability and transparency necessary for the institutions of democracy to provide any check on the most powerful military in the history of the world, and I’ve been humbled by the financial support from readers that has allowed us to expand and deepen our reporting.

Unfortunately, the news industry has seen...

Argentina's pesticide nightmare

School children in a small town in Argentina are breathing in cancer-causing pesticides. But now we can help. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

A person walking towards you spraying pesticdes onto crops

A,

Argentina is living a pesticide nightmare: in the 25 years since glyphosate was approved, cancer cases have tripled and birth defects have shot up 400%!

But an independent lab (the Chemistry and Environmental Pollution Group) is fighting back. They run tests on the water in town after town, and when the results show local people are drinking poison, communities have been able to go to court and win back their clean water.

The lab charges as little as it can for the work -- often even doing it out of their own pocket. So they desperately need funding to keep equipment updated, pay staff, and run the tests.

Can you chip in to help towns get clean drinking water and end Argentina's pesticide nightmare?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your...
