Did you see this message? I’ve spent years reporting on Erik Prince. Now he’s suing The Intercept. Stand for press freedom with a donation today.
Erik Prince, the billionaire mercenary who founded the private security firm Blackwater, is suing The Intercept.
Jeremy Scahill and other Intercept journalists have reported on Prince for years, tracing his activities from the days of Blackwater’s deadly operations in Iraq to his more recent turn as a Trump apparatchik and attempted power broker in the world of international arms.
He claims that an article examining efforts to sell military services to a sanctioned Russian company defamed him.
The Intercept stands by its reporting, but the stakes are much higher. Prince is...

Our work is far from done

Dear Friend,
This year alone, we’ve made impressive progress in holding policing systems accountable.
We took the RCMP to court; we signed onto letters and took police and the BC Government to task to ban street checks; we stood alongside victims of the racist and unlawful street checks by assisting with their complaints processes.
But our work of care is far from done. We want to continue our good work this year by redeveloping our educational resources, and we are raising $30,000 to cover the cost.
This holiday season, will you make a donation so we can bring more information to the public?
DONATEPart of the core work we do is educating the public about their rights through public legal education and resources. Our team of lawyers...

Let's buy a forest (...again)

A,
It sounds like a fairy tale, but there’s a place on Earth where tigers, elephants, and orangutans coexist in the wild. And this week we can buy a huge piece of their forest home to help protect it...forever.
The Leuser ecosystem in Indonesia has been called one of the most irreplaceable ecosystems on the planet. But poaching, infrastructure projects like hydroelectric dams, and mass deforestation fuelled by palm oil plantations are threatening to destroy it.
That’s why our partner Rainforest Trust wants to purchase and protect a huge chunk of this forest...and give these critically endangered species a fighting chance to survive. Just months ago we were able to do this in Colombia, and protect a rare monkey species...let’s do it again!
If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, Rainforest Trust has a donor offering a 4x match on your donation! They could secure the land quickly and...

I’ll be honest. The next few days, we’ll be sending a lot of emails asking readers to support The Intercept’s journalism before December 31.
But there’s a good reason for that: Every year, we get a last-minute surge of donations. More people donate to The Intercept in the last 48 hours of the year than usually do in an entire month.
Frankly, it’s nerve-wracking for everyone on our team. So many important reporting projects hang in the balance as we wait anxiously for donations to begin rolling in.
We don’t love filling up your inbox, but The Intercept’s journalism really does depend on your support....

The Intercept stands by its reporting, but the stakes are much higher. Prince is just the latest billionaire to use the legal system to try to silence the free press and keep his activities out of the public eye.

Why do we do this work?

Dear Friend,
“Why do you do the work you do?”
Throughout my 4 years working at the BCCLA, I often get asked this question. At panels, during media interviews, in day-to-day conversations with my loved ones.
My answer? I do this work because I care.
As the Policy Director, I see the impact of our work hands-on. And this year in particular, our work on policing made a huge impact.
DONATEIn our fight to end racist and illegal police street checks, we have seen first-hand that governments are not addressing root causes of problems. Instead, they criminalize social issues and over-police and under-protect communities.
In our lawsuit against the RCMP Commissioner, we argued that the systemic delays in the RCMP complaints process completely undermines police accountability.
Through our work in public legal education, we’ve seen that the...
SumOfUs Members Need Your Help

A,
In April 2020, we built something pretty unusual for a campaigning organization: a global mutual support platform where SumOfUs members everywhere could ask for and offer help in the context of the new Covid pandemic. It was kind of incredible...we were able to help hundreds of people through their toughest times, together.
It's now 20 months later. Many of us have been able to return to (or find) some kind of normal. Not everyone is so lucky.
As the months have passed, requests on the platform have just kept coming and coming. We now have almost 1000 open appeals for help from fellow SumOfUs members left in dire financial straits because of the pandemic.
Before we say goodbye to 2021, let's offer them a helping hand. We'll pool donations from our community worldwide and pass it all on to those asking for assistance. Can you chip in to give some fellow SumOfUs members a happier holiday season?
If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.
A, you did this!

Dear A,
Can you imagine being 16, a refugee from war-torn Syria, bullied and beaten at school and then a far-right celebrity starts posting lies about you, harassing you through his million-plus followers, using you to push his racist agenda?
That was Jamal's life.
But you all stepped in, helped raise enough money for Jamal to hire top lawyers, take his harasser to court and win enough money to establish a charity to help others.

This is the story of SumOfUs, this is the story of us, together.
It's been repeated dozens of times this year: standing with Indigenous people in Brazil as they successfully fought a government campaign to evict them from their ancestral lands, supporting brave whistleblowers as they take on Big Tech corporations in the halls of government, forcing governments to support lifting the Covid vaccine patent so everyone can have access to life-saving medicine...
Just, wow -- I hope you're proud, A. This has been a historic year in many of the most tragic ways, but it's also been...
Just one small gift will do!

Our year-end ask

Thank you for reading our articles about human rights defenders this year, or maybe opening an e-newsletter, joining us on a webinar and/or for following our updates on social media! Together we are all trying to make a difference by engaging in these ways and more.
Our plans for 2022 include more webinars, e-newsletters, articles and social media posts about human rights struggles in this country, Latin America and around the world.
We also want to build on our intervention on Wet'suwet'en territory last month, find volunteers for our frontline projects accompanying defenders in Latin America, produce a research report on Canadian arms exports to Colombia, strengthen our advocacy interventions and so much more!
To do this we need your support.
We have two platforms to make online donations: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/peace-brigades-international-canada/ and https://pbicanada.org/donations/donate-to-pbi-canada/.
We also welcome cheques mailed to: Peace Brigades International-Canada, 211 Bronson Avenue, #220, Ottawa, Ontario, K1R 6H5.
Thank you again for your support!
Brent Patterson
