We did it! Total and Chevron to exit Myanmar

Hi A,
WE DID IT! After we grew our petition to over 100,000 signers urging Total and Chevron to suspend payments to the Myanmar military, our allies in Myanmar, Korea, France, and the US shared it and used it in advocacy meetings with the companies and governments.
And it worked! After months of pressure, Total and Chevron just announced they will withdraw their business from Myanmar.
With allies, we translated the petition into Burmese which gave people from Myanmar a platform to have their voices heard. Even Burmese people working for the energy companies stood by our ask.
And with partners and activists, we organized demonstrations across the US and delivered our voices directly to the companies – including at the Chevron AGM. Through a shareholder resolution filed by allies, Burmese human rights defender Khin Ohmar delivered our call through a video that was presented at the AGM and viewed by shareholders and executives alike.
Similarly, in its press release, Total noted that it felt pressure from shareholders and from people inside Myanmar and their allies around the world.
A, it is thanks to supporters like you that we were able to build up pressure that eventually forced the companies to withdraw their support to...

Ray-Ban has teamed up with Facebook to create "Story glasses" which allow people to secretly photograph and record others. In addition to being creepy, it's a data privacy nightmare and will only continue to enrich the coffers of Mark Zuckerberg.
But the glasses are only available in select countries, which means if we raise the alarm now, we can get Luxottica, Ray-Ban's parent company, to stop the rollout and scrap these creepy glasses altogether.

It’s a stalker’s dream product, and sounds like something out of a Black Mirror episode. But these problematic glasses are already for sale, with...

Hi Paov,
We are still reeling from the groundswell of energy at the mass organizing call we hosted last week with our pals at the Council of Canadians and nearly 600 of you across the country.
I wanted you to be the first to know that since we launched the Day of Action for a Just Transition on that call, 12 groups have already added actions to the map. People across the country get what our politicians fail to understand – the stakes are too high for us to delay the shift off of fossil fuels any further.
But I’ll be frank. To have the most impact at this pivotal moment in the fight against the climate crisis, we need actions in as many communities as possible to get the attention of those in power. Paov, will you take a moment and register to host an event in your community on the Day of Action for a Just Transition?
Let me explain why your action matters: Justin Trudeau promised us a Just Transition Act three years ago. Getting just transition legislation right is a critical first step to secure good, green jobs for...

When a giant oil company announced plans to build the 1,172-mile-long Dakota Access pipeline across watersheds and drinking water sources, it sparked massive protests led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
The backlash was swift and brutal. Security guards attacked pipeline opponents with dogs. Protesters faced charges carrying up to 110 years in prison.
As part of its response, pipeline owner Energy Transfer hired TigerSwan, a security firm that collaborated with police and employed military-style surveillance and counterinsurgency tactics against the Indigenous-led protest movement.
The Intercept has covered the protests from the beginning and broken countless stories on TigerSwan’s counterinsurgency campaign against #NoDAPL activists. Now we’re suing to gain access to thousands of pages of public records...

Dog killed in spring-loaded trap

PAOV — "Conibear traps are dangerous for pets and people, causing an extremely cruel, agonizing death and serious and long-lasting injury to any living creature caught in them." In Manitoba, trappers are allowed to use spring-loaded conibear traps. These traps are marketed as “instant-kill”, but often lead to a slow and excruciating death for animals. Ruby, a spaniel-mix dog, died in pain after struggling for 30 minutes in a conibear trap while on a walk. This petition is calling for the traps to be banned province-wide. You can help by adding your signature.
