Winding through mountainous wilderness in the heart of Wet’suwet’en territories is a glistening, sacred river. The Wet’suwet’en call it Wedzin Kwa — “the blue and green river” — and cherish it for its purity and healing powers.
This river system has been revered by the Wet’suwet’en since time immemorial. Ancient village sites around and along the Wedzin Kwa attest to the rich history and long connections the Wet’suwet’en have to this waterway. For millennia the clans of the Wet’suwet’en have depended on the river and the sustenance it provides — in particular, the different species of salmon that traverse this inland channel and its tributaries to spawn through most of the year.
“There’s one area you’ll walk through and you can feel the spirit from the water. You can feel it for probably just a second and then it’s gone. It’s just letting you know that it’s sacred.”
Elder Betty Joseph, 67, from the Lik’silyu Clan, is known as one of the greatest living fisherwomen among the Wet’suwet’en. She grew up helping her grandparents harvest salmon in the summer months...

Paov,
Iron & Earth worked with Desmond Bull from the Louis Bull Tribe to develop two community-based rapid upskilling programs for fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers: a 10-day solar program and a 10-day wind energy program. These programs include five days of in-class work and five days of hands-on training which involves the installation of a small solar and wind energy system. The programs ready to deliver the Community Solar Skills and Community Wind Skills Programs in partnership with Maskwacis Cultural College!
We are currently accepting applications from fossil fuel industry and Indigenous workers based in Maskwacis and the surrounding area with an interest in learning the skills needed to participate in solar or wind energy system project design, installation and maintenance.
Thanks to the generous contributions of a number of funders, these offerings of the Community Solar and Community Wind Skills Programs will be available at no cost to the participants.

Pipeline overruns

Since Trudeau bought the Trans Mountain Pipeline, the construction cost has ballooned – likely more than 8 billion dollars to cost we were given two years ago at the purchase date.
Call on the government to stop the construction of the pipeline until a formal review of the construction cost.
A,
Over the past year, construction of the new Trans Mountain pipeline has been hampered by climate change-driven extreme weather and the pandemic.
Record breaking heat, wildfires, flooding and, most recently, rerouted rivers and landslides have left sections of construction buried under landslides or washed away. These extreme weather events have meant more and more delays along the pipeline route and construction route.
Two years ago, the construction of the pipeline was an estimated $12.6 billion, but that final price will be much higher due to the flooding and delays, some experts believe it will be over $20 billion dollars.
Trans Mountain even recently admitted the...

Dear Friend,
In August 2021 I travelled to the Tiny House Warriors Village on a fact-finding mission to better understand the escalating intimidation and surveillance at the hands of the state of Canada and the Trans Mountain (TMX) Crown Corporation.
I wrote about this surveillance in my latest blog. Read it here.
The Tiny House Warriors (THWs) are Secwepemc Land & Water Defenders who oppose the plan to expand the capacity of the TMX pipeline. They have been engaging in political advocacy to block the expansion of the pipeline.
During my visit, it was clear that THW members were under constant surveillance. THW members showed me idling and unmarked vehicles with people filming and monitoring them 24/7. There was also a robotic surveillance tower installed by TMX, as well as surveillance equipment installed in the public areas.
We are concerned with this problematic behaviour. This around-the-clock monitoring...

Elephant breeding ground

A,
A majestic and essential breeding ground for elephants is about to be sold off to international investors and destroyed, but a nearby Maasai community is trying to come to the rescue -- we can help them win!
These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in!
Just 200 dollars will allow the community to grow the conservancy by a whole acre of essential land! Together we can help create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa. Are you in?

PAOV — The production of palm oil is destroying rainforests and killing the animals that inhabit them — animals like orangutans, tigers, and elephants. Costco’s Kirkland Brand uses palm oil in many of their products, and Costco has not updated their palm oil policy since 2015. Petition starter Ashley believes it’s time for Costco to go palm-oil free. If you believe rainforests and wildlife shouldn’t be destroyed for profit, add your name today.

Paov,
Every year, the 350 Canada team asks supporters like you to fill out our annual survey. Your feedback and input plays an extremely important role in guiding the work we're doing to fight for climate justice.
This year is no exception. We know the end of the fossil fuel era has begun, but our elected officials are not prepared to take the action needed. We can only change that if we work together. Fill out this survey to tell us how you’re feeling about the year ahead and what you would like to see us focus on.
The actions we take together in 2022 are more important than ever. That’s why, on January 20th, we got together with our friends at the Council of Canadians and hundreds of you from coast to coast to kick-start our plans to ensure we win a Just Transition Act...

About the convoy

Paov,
As of this morning the “Truckers for Freedom” occupation has entered its third day in Ottawa, choking off access to the downtown core and putting hate symbols on open display.1 Whether they were watching on the news from the other side of the country or from their front doors in downtown Ottawa, people across the country were disgusted by the harassment, vandalism and hate.
You probably know by now that members of Canada’s far-right movement organized the convoy, and the protest has attracted the sympathy of thousands more who are angry and disaffected by a system they know is rigged.2
In fact, the current convoy camped out on Parliament Hill looks remarkably similar to the Yellow Vest convoy that descended on Ottawa three years ago. Claiming to be in opposition to Trudeau’s carbon tax, it similarly became swept up by anti-immigrant and far-right sentiment.
Right wing politicians and their operators have been pouring fuel on working class frustration ever since. Instead of addressing the problems we face, they’ve successfully tapped into working people’s rage in order to further their visions of everything from fossil fuel expansion to privatization to white nationalist ideologies....

PAOV — “While there have been significant long term plans to end Indigenous water struggles, there has been a lack of Government action.” There are still seventeen drinking water advisories in fifteen different First Nations communities in British Columbia, and 73% of First Nations water systems across the country are at risk of contamination. If you agree that the federal government needs to make clean drinking water access a priority, sign the petition now.

Is this the end for Bonobos?

A,
A 20-year ban on industrial logging will soon be lifted in the Congo Basin, opening up the only home of endangered bonobos to even greater threats from deforestation.
Without their rainforest home, these gentle apes won't survive.
But there’s a surefire way to save these bonobos: secure official protection for 2 million acres of this rainforest, and defend it from loggers.
And we can do this for just $1 per acre!
If enough of us chip in $88, our friends at the Bonobo Conservation Initiative can start securing tens of thousands of acres of critical bonobo habitat -- can you help save these bonobos?
If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.

We wanted to make sure you didn’t miss this message. Can you support The Intercept as we wage this expensive legal battle?
When a giant oil company announced plans to build the 1,172-mile-long Dakota Access pipeline across watersheds and drinking water sources, it sparked massive protests led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe.
The backlash was swift and brutal. Security guards attacked pipeline opponents with dogs. Protesters faced charges carrying up to 110 years in prison.
As part of its response, pipeline owner Energy Transfer hired TigerSwan, a security firm that collaborated with police and employed military-style surveillance and counterinsurgency tactics against the Indigenous-led protest movement.
The Intercept has covered the protests from the beginning and...
