Mexico's Amazon

A,
The Maya Forest is like Mexico’s Amazon — home to rare and threatened species like jaguars, tapirs, and howler monkeys — and the heartland of Indigenous communities stretching back centuries.
But it’s about to get torn open -- for a multi-billion dollar “tourist train”!
One tiny local group is fighting it with everything they have — but they have literally 4 staff. They’ve filed a legal challenge, but without urgent funding for constitutional experts and lawyers, legal fees, and research, the case will go nowhere.
This is a true David vs. Goliath story, exactly what our community does best. If 5000 of us chip in today, we can ramp up our fight and get these brave nature defenders the cash they need in days — without the mountains of paperwork and red tape, and months of waiting, that they just can’t afford.
Can you chip in to save Mexico’s Amazon?

A,
A majestic and essential breeding ground for elephants is about to be sold off to international investors and destroyed, but a nearby Maasai community is trying to come to the rescue -- we can help them win!
These indigenous leaders already run a wildly successful conservancy and if they can show they have the resources to acquire the land and remove the fencing that threatens migrating herds, the sellers say they have a deal. But investors are already calling with big offers, so they need to move fast -- that's where we come in!
Just 200 dollars will allow the community to grow the conservancy by a whole acre of essential land! Together we can help create the longest wildlife corridor in East Africa. Are you in?

Did you see this message about our legal battle for public records on the Dakota Access pipeline? Donate now and help us keep up the fight.
The campaign led by the Standing Rock Sioux to stop the Dakota Access pipeline triggered a brutal crackdown from private security and law enforcement agencies.
Pipeline opponents were attacked with dogs, tear gas, and rubber bullets. Police and law enforcement employed surveillance and counterinsurgency tactics. At one point, protesters were shot with a water cannon in freezing cold weather, sending people to be treated for hypothermia and other injuries.
The Intercept has broken countless stories on TigerSwan, the private security firm hired by Dakota Access pipeline owner Energy Transfer. But we are still working on the story of...

The original injunction expired in October, but a temporary injunction has been active since
By Zoë Ducklow
January 27, 2022
The BC Court of Appeal has renewed the injunction at Fairy Creek until Sept. 26, 2022, overturning a lower court ruling from the fall. Logging company Teal-Jones, which successfully obtained an injunction in April 2021, had applied for the extension last fall, but at the time, Justice Douglas Thompson decided to let it expire.
Thompson cited two key reasons: first, that an injunction was an unnecessary overlap when there’s criminal activity. Police don’t need a court order to enforce criminal behaviour, he reasoned. Second, he said the...
