Throne Speech

This email will be a bit longer than normal, but I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it and take action. r1

Paov,

There’s a lot going on in the world right now, so this email will be a bit longer than normal and in a different format, but I hope you’ll take a few minutes to read it and take action.

This afternoon, Governor General Mary Simon is delivering the Throne Speech that traditionally marks the start of a new Parliament. Trudeau’s office says the speech will lay out his government’s plans to “build a better future for everyone.”1 But, considering their actions -- and lack of action -- over the past week, those words ring pretty hollow.

BC is in a state of emergency due to widespread flooding and government agencies are warning residents to prepare for another wave of extreme weather that could cause even more chaos.2 But, when they should be focused on protecting people from this unfolding climate disaster, the federal and provincial governments are busy protecting a pipeline. While people were banding together to shelter displaced neighbours and get food to communities cut off by floods, even chartering private helicopters to get the job done3,...

People often ask me why the BCCLA is so passionate about bringing an end to the practice of prolonged solitary confinement, and why we continue to bring this case to the courts.

The government claims that long-term solitary confinement has been banned. But wardens at federal prisons continue to isolate people in long-term solitary confinement by using lockdowns and “restrictive movement routines.”

This is not right, and we...

30-second action

The rally for a Just Transition is about to start. Help amplify our message. r1

Paov,

Over 10,000 people across the country have signed our petition calling on Justin Trudeau to make the Just Transition Act his government’s top priority. A huge thank you to everyone who took action!

Today, just before Parliament gathers for the first time since June, we’re going to deliver that petition right to his door. This morning, 350 Canada supporters -- along with allies from the climate, labour, and social justice movements -- are rallying outside the Prime Minister’s office in Ottawa to demand he move forward with a Just Transition Act that meets the scale of the climate crisis we are facing.

Even if you're not at the rally, you can still help us amplify the message. Use our one-click tool to tweet at Trudeau about the Just Transition Act. It takes just 30 seconds.

The media spotlight will be focused on Parliament all day and we’re expecting a lot of activity on social media. Together with partner organizations who are taking part in the rally and this online action too, we can get #JustTransitionAct and #NoMoreDelaysOnClimate trending. It’s a powerful way to demonstrate that people across the...

A hedge fund is buying newspapers across the country — and then intentionally driving them into the ground

A ruthless vulture hedge fund is buying up and gutting newspapers all over the country, including some of the nation’s most storied publications.

A ruthless vulture hedge fund called Alden Global Capital is buying up and gutting newspapers all over the country, including some of the nation’s most storied publications.

Their strategy is simple: Strip the newspaper to bare bones. Cash in on existing subscribers and advertisers. Watch profits go up — and journalism die.

It’s just the latest gut punch to journalism at a time when our democracy is already in peril.

The Intercept is an independent nonprofit newsroom, with no corporate advertisers or shareholders to answer to. But with much of the news industry going under, we know that we need the resources to sustain and grow our work into the future — without putting ads on our website or setting...

Death blow for the Amazon?

Brazilian President Bolsonaro calls it his "dream" to crack open the Amazon. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Indigenous man rowing in a canoe in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil

A,

Far right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro says it's his "dream" to crack open the Amazon.

And he's pushing legislation to make his dream come true -- opening the rainforest to out-of-control mining and expelling Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands to make it happen.

These hideous bills could be voted on any day now -- we need an urgent, all-out push to stop him. That means polling to put pressure on key politicians, generating national and international media coverage, and backing the Indigenous organizations on the front lines to stop this dangerous legislation in its tracks.

And it means we're counting on you, A -- will you chip in today to save the Amazon and its people?

If you’ve saved your payment information with SumOfUs, your donation will go through immediately.

The End of Normal. An argument Against Forestry.

https://amandachristmas.com/life-1/f/the-end-of-normal-an-argument-against-forestry

November 16, 2021

Our weather in BC is out of control and as a direct result of the logging industry’s overzealous harvesting practices and greed we are witnessing too many once in a lifetime events in rapid succession. We need heavy forestry reform, and to adopt the practices of the original people who protected this land for tens of thousands of years successfully.

“The storm starts when the drops start dropping / When the drops stop dropping, the storm starts stopping.”

-Dr. Seuss

As I write this, my province is underwater. Friends and family have been completely evacuated or trapped in their homes, and the city I grew up in has been completely cut off by land to the rest of the country. Railways and highways coming into Vancouver have been wiped out by landslides. Water has saturated the ground so heavily that the roads are buckling and bridges are collapsing. The wind is so harsh an unmanned barge crashed into a seawall at Stanley Park.

Want to buy Bayer-Monsanto?!

Fight them from the inside. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌

Stack of glyphosate safety study reports

A,

We have a new plan to take on Bayer-Monsanto and their bee-killing pesticides: buy up shares and fight them from the inside!

We’ve spent years taking on these giants, and we’ve had incredible success. But their resources are endless, and they always find ways to bully beekeepers and keep their poisons on shelves and in our food.

So here’s what we’ll do -- if enough people chip in, SumOfUs will buy stock in Bayer-Monsanto -- then work to rally other shareholders, turn up at their AGM, and ratchet up pressure on execs over their bee-killing ways.

We know this works. Just last year a SumOfUs shareholder resolution forced Apple to publish its first-ever human rights policy. Now it’s Monsanto’s turn.

For the next 24 hours we’ll use everything you give to generate matching donations from big funders, doubling your impact -- can you help buy a piece of Bayer-Monsanto and save the bees?

The past few days have weighed heavy on my heart. r1

Friends,

The past few days have weighed heavy on my heart. BC, the province I have called home my entire life, is dealing with catastrophic flooding after an atmospheric river supercharged by climate change dumped nearly a month’s worth of rainfall on us in just a matter of days1.

It’s even more alarming knowing that, just three months ago, we suffered the deadliest weather event in Canadian history, the heat dome,2 and the third-worst wildfire season ever recorded, which tore through Lytton in a day. Now that same community is surrounded by floodwaters.

This tragedy should make it clear to everyone in Canada that we cannot afford to delay climate action any longer. A critical first step requires our elected leaders to keep their promises and make major investments in taking us off fossil fuels. Thousands of people across the country have already signed the petition calling on Justin Trudeau to make a Just Transition off of fossil fuels his number one priority. On Monday, we plan to deliver the petition at a rally outside his Ottawa office.

Paov, we’re trying to hit 10,000 signatures before then and we’re just 454 signatures short...
