COP26 failing land defenders

A quick update about the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow before we travel to witness the Wet’suwet’en land defence struggle in British Columbia.
Thank you to everyone who registered for our webinar on COP26 this past Saturday. If you missed it, the link to the video, excerpts and more can be found at PBI hosts webinar with frontline environmental defenders during COP26 summit.
We had more than 400 people from 17 countries register for this informative and inspiring webinar and already the video has been watched almost 200 times!
Sadly, the actions – and even the words – of the leaders at COP26 are falling far short of what is needed.
Despite the killings of more than 1,005 land and environmental rights defenders since COP21 in 2015, the first draft of the Glasgow decision text fails to make mention that the violence against defenders must stop.
As such our collective work of accompanying defenders, amplifying their struggles and advocating for systemic change must and will continue.

A,
How amazing is this -- scientists have discovered mushrooms that can devour plastic waste in a matter of weeks...plastic that would otherwise just be in the ocean forever.
Right now 91% of plastics we use can’t be recycled -- and every minute a truckload-worth is dumped in the ocean, suffocating sea life and spreading pollutants across shores.
But scientists say these mushrooms could eat up to half of the plastic waste being dumped in the ocean -- and they need your help to finish their groundbreaking research.
Scientist Dr Cullings is retiring from NASA this year to join the nonprofit Ocean Blue Project in their work to isolate and reproduce plastic-eaters for industrial use. They have projects planned in the US and New Zealand that need funding. If 5000 of us chip in, we can pay for the lab equipment they need to finish their research -- and help rid the planet of plastic waste. Are you in?
Will you be there?

Dear Friend,
Our virtual fundraising panel “No Justice in Isolation: Challenging Prison Conditions in Canada” is 3 weeks away!
Get your ticket today!Criminalizing laws and systems extend into many aspects of our lives, and particularly impact Indigenous, Black, racialized migrant, disabled, and low-incoming people – trapping them in an expansive criminal legal system. This system includes prisons and the conditions under which people are incarcerated.
Prison conditions, such as solitary confinement, don’t happen in a vacuum. They’re informed by intersecting civil liberties and human rights issues, such as colonialism, systemic racism, criminalization, borders, classism, ableism, and so much more.
Join us on November 24, 6 pm – 7:30 pm PT for a virtual conversation with panelists...

Sign here to stop Smurfit Kappa Colombia from destroying indigenous land in Colombia.
A,
One of Europe’s biggest packaging companies is slowly killing rainforests in Colombia -- to make paper and cardboard.
For decades, Smurfit Kappa has bulldozed forests to plant its own non-native trees -- drying up the land and choking out ecosystems. And Indigenous communities are paying the price.
The indigenous Misak people, the Nasa people and other communities have lived in Southern Colombia in the Cauca region for thousands of years. This land is part of their cultural identity and is full of sacred spaces.
But Smurfit Kappa is destroying it all to make paper.
The Misak people have been locked in a fight with the cardboard giant for years -- but Smurfit Kappa still sells itself...

Paov,
Two weeks from today, MPs will head back to Ottawa for one of the most consequential sessions of Parliament in our lifetimes and we’re organizing to make sure real climate action is at the top of their agenda.
This will be the moment we find out if all the campaign trail talk about finally meeting the climate crisis head on was for real. The actions our politicians take in the months ahead will either put Canada on the right track, or keep us barrelling down a dangerous path.
We’ve been pushing hard for Justin Trudeau to meet this moment by making the Just Transition Act his top priority. Once we hit 10,000 petition signatures, we’re going to ramp up the pressure -- and we’re just 3,556 signatures away from that goal.
Paov, can you help us keep the pressure up in this last stretch by adding your name now?
COP26 is still going on this week, but Trudeau is now back in Ottawa, working on mandate letters for his Cabinet ministers and the Throne Speech that will lay out his government’s priorities for the coming term. In Glasgow, the PM played the role...

Nestlé in court!

A,
Didier Thouvenin is a farmer in Vittel, France -- home to one of Nestlé's massive water-guzzling projects.
Together with other whistleblowers, he exposed that Nestlé was illegally dumping huge amounts of plastic and chemical waste, forcing it to admit to creating NINE massive dumping sites.
But instead of cleaning up the mess and apologizing to local residents, Nestlé filed a legal complaint against Didier for trespassing! We know it won’t stop there -- there were 11 other activists with Didier that day and Nestlé is famous for doing everything they can to silence opposition to protect its profits.
Didier just told us he URGENTLY needs to secure a lawyer to fight back. If enough of us chip in, we can create a legal defense fund for Didier and other brave activists standing up to Nestlé... can you help?

The numbers don’t lie. The journalism industry is in deep, deep trouble.
From 2008-2020, nearly two-thirds of the newsroom jobs at U.S. newspapers vanished. Then the pandemic hit, and the floor really dropped out.
More than 90 local newsrooms have shut down completely during the pandemic. Other newsrooms were gutted with layoffs, and few if any went entirely unscathed.
And then, in an additional blow, public interest in the news cratered after Donald Trump left office, with ratings at cable TV news channels like CNN crashing by as much as 50 percent after Trump’s departure.
There’s no sugarcoating it. The core business model that the journalism industry relied on for the last 100 years is dying. But we can’t afford to let investigative journalism die out simply because it doesn’t attract advertisers....

A,
Thirteen-year-old Muhammad Shadi Sa'adi was leaving a friend’s funeral when undercover police kidnapped, blindfolded, beat him, then threw him in prison.
Right now 85 Palestinian children and youth, just like Muhammad, are being held for crimes they didn't commit.
It’s all part of a deliberate Israeli campaign to terrorize Palestinian families. These children’s parents know the only way to bring their children home is to hire legal counsel to fight these bogus charges in court, but they don't have the funds to cover the costs. So they've asked for our help.
If enough of us chip in, we can work alongside Palestinian youth organization Baladna to urgently hire lawyers to free kids like Muhammad who’ve been locked up. Can you donate just a small amount to help set these kids free, and continue the fight for justice for Palestine?

Are the Democrats screwed?
After last night’s dramatic defeat in Virginia, will the party learn any lessons in time to course-correct before next year’s midterm elections? Or will continued dysfunction in Congress continue to stymie popular and progressive priorities?
The Intercept’s D.C. Bureau Chief Ryan Grim has been chronicling the rise of the party’s insurgent wing for years. He argues that it’s gradually putting an end to Clinton-era subservience to moneyed interests but that “for now, the party’s past still has a death grip on the present.”

PAOV — Petition starter Jen is urging BC’s government to stop all planned changes to the province’s autism therapy funding. The government plans to end all direct funding to families within the next four years, replacing the current individual funding model with a “hub” system that will interrupt or end access to personalized treatment for many families. If you think that the government should continue their current autism therapy funding model, sign the petition now.

3,870 have signed Jen Biddlecombe’s petition. Let’s get to 5,000!
