Joe Manchins massive conflicts of interest

The senator has made millions from coal, and new reporting by The Intercept has uncovered just how much damage his companies have done.

When Sen. Joe Manchin announced that he wanted a “pause” on consideration of the $3.5 trillion infrastructure bill, he said his main concern was the federal debt being left to his grandkids. Most news coverage attributes his opposition to the conservative, coal-friendly politics of West Virginia.

But reporting by The Intercept has found that there may be other reasons why he’s balking at the bill: lobbyists, campaign contributions, and his own personal financial interests.

Earlier this year, The Intercept uncovered a leaked recording of a Zoom call between Manchin and billionaire donors discussing legislative strategy. Later, we exposed an audio recording of the same Wall Street-funded dark-money group dangling campaign contributions in front of other conservative Democrats who do...

Ten days to stop the Piripkura being wiped out

Today was incredible, heres whats next

Let's keep up the momentum, tomorrow, join the Climate Voters Alliance e-rally.

r1

Paov,

Today was incredible. Thousands of people in over 60 communities all across the country rallied and marched to send a singular, clear message ahead of the federal election -- this is an emergency, and it’s time for politicians to act like it.

From Halifax to Vancouver, St. John’s to Yellowknife, and all points in between. In small towns and big cities, people turned out to make it clear that we need to stop fossil fuel expansion and pass a just transition for all. At one of the last actions of the day, where I live in Squamish, BC author and activist Naomi Klein made it clear, telling the crowd that “everything we love is at stake” if we don’t come together and seize this moment. Together, we made sure that climate was top of mind for politicians and media across the country ahead of the federal leaders’ debates.

Not just ice cream

A,

MASSIVE PROGRESS! Ben & Jerry’s announced it will stop selling ice cream in the Occupied Palestinian Territory thanks to pressure from SumOfUs members like you.

SumOfUs had been in contact with Ben & Jerry’s since 50,000 SumOfUs members like you called on the corporation to take a stand against 70 years of on-going apartheid, colonization, and daily violation of human rights of Palestinian by Israeli forces. We know our community made a huge difference in getting Ben & Jerry’s historic announcement -- multiple sources within the company said your voices had an impact on this announcement finally being made.

Make no mistake about it, this is not just about ice cream -- the day after the announcement, the Prime Minister of Israel said Ben & Jerry's decision will have “severe consequences”. His government then sent a classified cable to its missions and embassies calling on its envoys to ramp up pressure on Ben & Jerry’s.

Ben & Jerry’s knew this aggressive reaction was coming when it made this announcement. But after Israeli Forces murdered 256 Palestinians, including 66 children, in the latest attacks in May -- Ben & Jerry’s Board of Directors and staff took concrete action in support of Palestinian justice.

In less than a month, well see the RCMP Commissioner in court

Dear Friend,

This is it – we are going to court to face the RCMP Commissioner.

In November 2020, we sued the RCMP Commissioner for her extreme delay which prevented the release of a report by the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC) into RCMP spying. The CRCC report found that the RCMP spied on climate organizations and Indigenous Nations opposed to the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

On September 21st & 22nd, we’re going to court.

We are the first to take the RCMP to court on this issue, and we need your support before we go there. Will you make a donation of $30 to support our lawsuit?

In court, pro bono counsel Paul Champ and I will argue that the RCMP Commissioner’s unreasonable delay in responding to the CRCC report breached her obligations under the RCMP Act and violated the BCCLA’s Charter right to freedom of expression.

Enough is enough. We had to wait nearly...

Let's get climate on the agenda

The Leaders' Debates start tomorrow. Join us to demand climate action. r1

Paov,

Tomorrow, the official Federal Leaders' Debates will kick off. We have to make sure that the climate emergency is at the top of the agenda especially as climate-driven wildfires continue to burn through Western Canada.

That’s why, tomorrow, on September 8th, over 60 communities across Canada are rising up to set the bar for climate action ahead of the leaders' debates. Check out our action directory to find out if there's an action close to you.

If there isn't an action taking place near you, I encourage you to get out on the streets anyway. All you have to do is print out a sign from our arts toolkit, take it to a central location in your town, and take a photo of you holding it up. You can post the photo using #CanadaOnFire or send it to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

If all of us take action in as many different towns and cities as possible, we can make sure that tomorrow will be the largest national day of action to take place during this election. As thousands of people rise up in nearly every single province and territory,...

Another blockbuster scoop by The Intercept

A Wall Street-funded pressure group offered to raise $200,000 for two conservative Democrats if they would cancel their appearances at a fundraiser hosted by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to sources.

Big-time Wall Street investors have launched a blitz to block the $3.5 trillion infrastructure package backed by progressives, which includes tax increases on corporations and superrich private equity investors.

They’ve deployed a small army of lobbyists and hired former staffers of nearly two dozen Democratic members of Congress to kill the bill.

And it now appears that dark-money group No Labels is dangling incentives for legislators to oppose the package, with the group offering to fundraise for conservative Democrats in return for breaking ranks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In June, No Labels co-founder Nancy Jacobson was explicit in her plan to use donor money to “reward” members of Congress who voted the...
