(Coast Salish Territory / Vancouver BC – May 16, 2016). The BC government is enabling a dangerous disregard for environmental monitoring, reporting and protection among mining companies by letting them off the hook for the full costs of environmental reclamation – leaving taxpayers liable for more than $1.5 billion, a new report shows.
“Other industrial sectors treat accident insurance and security deposits as a routine and fundamental cost of doing business and if a warehouse catches fire, a pipeline bursts or a factory has to be shuttered, companies have money set aside to respond effectively and immediately,” said Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs.

During the last election, Justin Trudeau pledged to bring respect back for Parliament. Physically intervening to usher an opposition MP to his seat, and, in the process, shoving another MP, was not the sort of respect he promised. Parliamentary correspondent Karl Nerenberg pushes through the fracas to...

What Remains of All Our Outrage?
Esther Vivas
It's been five years since the massive occupation of May 15, 2011 that gave birth to the movement of los indignados, known as the 15M movement, followed by five years of faltering progress with many advances and set-backs along the way -- five years of a tremendous crisis, civil unrest and mass protest. What remains today after such a sustained period of outrage?
15M has changed the way we read and interpret the crisis we are facing. We were all told in 2008 that "we live beyond our means," were blamed for the present situation; but the movement of los indignados has enabled us to change the story. One of its principle slogans, "no somos mercancías...

This past week the Sunday Times in South Africa, and various other news agencies, reported on interviews with a dying CIA operative, Donald Rickard, who acknowledged the agency’s involvement in the arrest of Nelson Mandela that facilitated South Africa’s first democratically elected president’s 28 years of incarceration. So what’s the surprise?

On February 4, 2016, the United States and eleven other countries around the Pacific Rim finally signed the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). The twelve signatories now have two years to ratify the agreement. In the U.S., after passage of so-called “fast-track” authority in June, 2015, the TPP may not be amended or filibustered in Congress and will simply face an up-or-down vote. Exactly when that vote will come is unclear at the time of writing. Since most of this year’s crop of aspiring emperors/empresses have publicly opposed the TPP1, it may not be brought up for a vote until after the November elections in the lame-duck Congress, which would indeed be the final insult in this profoundly anti-democratic saga. Meanwhile, Barack Obama – in what the Associated Press has been presenting as a kind of valedictory world tour analogous to the final concert of the Rolling Stones – has been visiting European capitals and pressing for signatures on the similar Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). The latest round of those negotiations in February ended with high-ranking officials for both the U.S. and the EU expressing hopes of conclusion by the end of 2016, even if that means modifying the agreement’s most contentious element, the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) mechanism.

Brussels, 19 May 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC has welcomed the release of anti-slavery activists and the recent sentencing of slave owners as steps in the right direction, but recognises that a long way to go remains for Mauritania – one of the worlds’ most egregious labour rights violators, known to be a lasting stronghold of traditional slavery.

Friends,
This weekend, hundreds in Vancouver surrounded the Kinder Morgan terminal in Vancouver on the land and the water. This bold move was part of a global wave of resistance to the fossil fuel industry -- with tens of thousands of people from Australia to Germany to South Africa staging mass mobilizations targeting the world's most dangerous projects.
Ordinary people across the world are setting the example for courageous action to keep fossil fuels in the ground. It's time for the government to follow. That’s exactly what we’re calling on federal leaders to do with the People’s Climate Plan.
As the government launches local climate consultations across the country, we have a once in a generation opportunity to speak up for bold climate action in Canada.
