Norway's Unions Confront Neoliberalism:
A Country Report from a Meeting of Left Trade Unionists in European
Asbjørn Wahl
For a long time, Norway has represented an exception in Europe and the word. The main reason has been the abundance of oil revenue, which has made Norway the only country in Europe without net state debt. Until recently, Norwegian workers have therefore not felt the effects of the financial and economic crisis as strongly as most other workers in Europe. For example, unemployment rates have mostly been between 2.5 and 3.5 per cent over the last ten years.
However, since...

Tell Maryam Monsef what Make Every Vote Count Means to You!
On June 16, 2015, the Liberal Party of Canada released their election platform on electoral reform in which they promised to “make every vote count.” On that day, Justin Trudeau said:
“We need to know that when we cast a ballot, it counts. That when we vote, it matters. So I’m proposing we make every vote count.”
Since the Liberals formed government, they have repeated their commitment to make 2015 the last election using first-past-the-post. They have committed to spending 8 million dollars this year to consult Canadians about our values, but the most important value in their platform - to make every vote count - seems to be slipping behind the curtain.

Brussels, 9 May 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The resignation of Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, forced out of office by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has moved Turkey further down the path to autocracy. The sentencing of two senior journalists from the Cumhuriyet newspaper, Erdem Gul and Can Dundar to 5 years and 5 years 10 months in prison respectively is yet another example of fundamental freedoms being swept aside as President Erdogan assumes total control over the government and ruling AK Party.

Confronting Injustice:
Social Activism in the Age of Individualism
A new generation of activists working for economic and environmental justice, and against war and poverty, confronts critical questions. Why is the world so unjust and crisis-prone? What kind of world should we fight for? How can we win? In this panoramic yet accessible book, Umair Muhammad engages with these and other urgent debates. He argues that individual solutions like "buying green" are dead ends and that hope for the future lies in a radical expansion of democracy and the transformation of the economy from one based on profit to one that can meet human needs. The scale of these problems should make it clear that individualist, lifestyle approaches to activism will not suffice. We need to change...

Dear PAOV,
Did you know that Canada's animal protection laws are the worst
in the western world? Our animal cruelty laws haven't been
meaningfully updated since the 1950s, and we're failing animals as a
result.
But on Monday, Parliament will debate a new bill that could finally bring our laws into the 21st century. MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith put forward Bill C-246, the Modernizing Animal Protections Act, which would:
- update animal cruelty laws so abusers won't escape criminal punishment;
- ban cat and dog fur, which many of us are shocked to learn is not already illegal;
- ban the cruel practice of shark finning.
Monday's debate is just the first step on a long road to passing...

Dear PAOV,
Every morning I start my day reading a round-up of news related to Israel/Palestine. Demolitions, the IDF, and the ongoing humiliation of Palestinians dominate the headlines.
But there’s also often - increasingly - truly beautiful reports from the frontlines of our movement. Palestinians bravely asserting their rights, grassroots BDS victories, the courage of Israeli refuseniks, and the work of JVP chapters and members across the country.
