ITUC OnLine: VICTORY FOR TURKISH TRADE UNIONS

Brussels, 26 February 2016 (ITUC OnLine): The ITUC and the European Trade Union Confederation today welcomed the release of two Turkish journalists, Can Dündar and Erdem Gül, held in prison since November after being charged with revealing state secrets relating to weapon trafficking to Syria. Prosecutors had been seeking life imprisonment for the two journalists from leading independent newspaper Hurriyet.

Canada-China "free trade" harms the public interest of all
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will reportedly lead a trade mission to China this March. When then-prime minister Stephen Harper did the same in 2012, he brought with him corporate executives from Enbridge, Canadian Oil Sands Ltd, Cameco Corp, and thirty-seven other Canadian corporations.

Toronto’s Homeless Shelters Bursting at the Seams

On Wednesday, February 17, a mass delegation of members and supporters of the Ontario Coalition Against Poverty (OCAP) marched to Toronto City Hall. We brought with us copies of a report we had put together called Out in the Cold: The Crisis in Toronto's Shelter System. The City Council was putting the finishing touches to a municipal budget tailored to the needs of investors, developers and a well resourced police force. We entered the Council Chambers and interrupted their deliberations to deliver the report as many of them scrambled for the exits.
